Embattled low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines will cut service to 11 cities nationwide as it moves through its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy since 2024.

Let’s take a look at which cities will be affected and what you can do if you have upcoming travel planned with the airline.

Spirit Exiting 11 Markets

As of the week of October 2, 2025, Spirit Airlines will cease operations at the following 11 airports:

  • Albuquerque (ABQ)
  • Birmingham, Alabama (BHM)
  • Boise (BOI)
  • Chattanooga (CHA)
  • Columbia, South Carolina (CAE)
  • Oakland (OAK)

Further, Spirit will not start its previously announced service to Macon, Georgia (MCN), which was slated to begin on October 16, 2025.

A Spirit spokesperson confirmed these service cuts to Upgraded Points, saying the carrier’s decision to focus on operational profitability would allow it to dedicate more resources to its best-performing destinations.

The spokesperson went on to say the following regarding the service cuts:

We apologize to our Guests for any inconvenience this may cause and will reach out to those with affected reservations to notify them of their options, including a refund. We are grateful to the airports, business partners and community members in these markets who welcomed and supported us. We remain committed to offering high-value travel options and will continue to serve dozens of destinations throughout the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean.

Spirit Airlines spokesperson

If you have travel planned to or from any of the affected cities, expect Spirit to contact you to provide you with further options.

This network cut comes just days after Spirit Airlines declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy again, only months after emerging from its first bankruptcy filed in November 2024.

The airline believes that this time will be more successful, and part of that is adjusting its network to enhance profitability. For travelers living in other cities, plan on business as usual — at least for now. The carrier may make further network cuts soon, but that remains to be seen.

Hot Tip:

Low-cost rival Frontier wasted no time encroaching on Spirit’s territory after it caught wind of its dire financial prospects. The Denver-based carrier recently added 20 new routes nationwide, hoping that wary would-be Spirit flyers may take their business elsewhere.

Final Thoughts

Spirit Airlines is getting serious about turning its operation around, starting by cutting service to markets that aren’t cutting it from a profit standpoint.

If you’re traveling through any affected cities, expect communication from Spirit soon that will provide you with alternate options, including refunds.
