Competition is getting fiercer in Puerto Rico thanks to Spirit’s latest route expansion to San Juan.
Keep on reading to find out where Spirit will begin flying this summer!
Spirit Expands Service to San Juan This Summer
The ultra-low-cost carrier is no stranger to the island, as it started flying to Puerto Rico in 2001. To celebrate 2 decades of success, Spirit Airlines has now announced nonstop service between San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) and the following 5 U.S. cities:

All of these routes are already serviced by existing carriers, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, and JetBlue Airways. By entering these markets, Spirit seeks to bring even lower fares to these cities and grab some of the market share to this leisure destination.
Following the success of existing routes, Spirit will also beef up service from these 4 cities to San Juan International Airport:
Baltimore (BWI): 2x daily
Fort Lauderdale (FLL): 2x daily
Newark (EWR): 2x daily
Orlando (MCO): 5x daily
“Spirit Airlines has served the Puerto Rican community for more than two decades, offering affordable fares to connect family and friends across the United States.” said John Kirby, Spirit’s vice president of network planning, in a statement. “Puerto Rico is our number one destination in the Caribbean, with its rich history and culture, renowned beaches, tropical rainforest and the world’s brightest bioluminescent bay.”
In total, Spirit will now fly between 13 cities and Puerto Rico, as it continues to offer once daily flights originating from Boston (BOS), Miami (MIA), Philadelphia (PHL), and Tampa (TPA).
It’s worth noting that Frontier also made a splashy announcement at the end of January, even claiming that it will serve more routes to Puerto Rico than any other airline. In a similar fashion, Spirit now claims to be “the second-largest carrier [in Puerto Rico] by destinations, seats, and available seat miles (ASM)” with a whopping 21 daily departures by June 2023.
Hot Tip: Spirit is slated to receive new Airbus A320 aircraft this year, and you’ll be happy to hear that there are notable improvements with the legroom and seat width.
Final Thoughts
Flights to Puerto Rico are about to get even cheaper this summer as Spirit brings its signature low fares to the popular island of Puerto Rico. With introductory fares starting as low as $59 one-way, these new routes are great additions to Spirit’s ever-growing route map!
