T-Mobile has long offered its customers free inflight Wi-Fi on several U.S. airlines, including United Airlines. Now that United is working to retrofit its fleet with high-speed Starlink service, T-Mobile has removed United from its list of supported partners.

Here’s what you need to know.

Say Goodbye to Free Wi-Fi From T-Mobile

United Airlines has been making headlines recently for its Wi-Fi plans, and it is working to install ultra-quick Starlink inflight Wi-Fi across most of its fleet.

While the majority of its regional fleet now features Starlink, only a small portion of its mainline fleet is equipped. However, the airline expects to make significant progress on that front by the end of this year.

In the meantime, United continues to offer inflight Wi-Fi delivered via an older, slower system for $8 for MileagePlus members or $10 for nonmembers. Previously, T-Mobile customers were offered this connection for free after verifying their phone number with the wireless carrier.

That perk has now been discounted. T-Mobile ended this offer on American Airlines flights earlier this year, but American now offers Wi-Fi free of charge to AAdvantage members on most flights.

T-Mobile still offers free Wi-Fi on Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, and Southwest Airlines, but as these carriers move toward offering free, fast Wi-Fi of their own, T-Mobile’s perk is becoming less essential.

Why This Timing Feels Off

The United case is a bit peculiar, since the carrier doesn’t yet offer free Wi-Fi on flights that aren’t equipped with Starlink. And while it’s making progress on its retrofit program, it will be quite some time before the majority of its fleet has the blazing-fast (and free) satellite connection. United expects to have Starlink installed across its entire fleet by the end of 2027.

Hot Tip:

U.S. carriers aren’t the only ones rolling out free, high-speed Wi-Fi. Several international carriers, including Air France and Virgin Atlantic, are in the process of installing Starlink across their fleets — and they offer it free to members of their loyalty programs.

Final Thoughts

United flyers who also have T-Mobile service will no longer have access to free Wi-Fi on the carrier’s flights. The timing is unfortunate, since United’s Starlink project won’t be completed until the end of next year, but it will become less of an issue as the weeks pass and United introduces more Starlink-equipped jets into its fleet.
