Update:

The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

Portuguese flag carrier TAP Air Portugal is offering 6x status-earning miles on all bookings made by November 10, 2024.

The promotion is meant to celebrate the sixth anniversary of TAP Miles&Go, the airline’s loyalty program.

Let’s look at how this promotion works and why it’s interesting for U.S.-based flyers.

How the TAP Promotion Works

TAP said in a statement that Status Miles for each trip purchased through November 10 will be multiplied by 6, up to a maximum of 6,000 extra miles. The offer is valid for bookings on all TAP routes made via TAP Air Portugal’s website, for flights through November 5, 2025.

The TAP Miles&Go program features 2 different types of miles: Status Miles and Bonus Miles.

Status Miles are required for elite status but are not added to a member’s TAP Miles&Go account, so members can’t use Status Miles for award flights or other redemption options.

Bonus Miles are the miles earned from flying TAP and its partners, and those can be redeemed for an award flight. A member will typically earn the same number of Status Miles as Bonus Miles on a given flight.

Like other airline loyalty programs, the number of status-earning miles you earn in a year affects which tier you attain in the program. TAP has Silver, Gold, and Navigator status tiers, which give access to progressively more benefits when traveling with TAP and its Star Alliance partners.

For example, Gold status on TAP Portugal translates to Star Alliance Gold status, giving access to more than 60 Star Alliance airport lounges in the U.S.

Hot Tip:

TAP is a member of Star Alliance, as is United Airlines. If you’re based in the U.S. and fly TAP only occasionally, you will likely find it more convenient to earn United MileagePlus miles on its flights instead of TAP’s own.

The TAP Air Portugal Credit Card

Note that last year TAP launched a U.S. credit card, the TAP Miles&Go American Express® Card from Cardless.

Cardholders earn 1 Status Mile for every 5 miles earned from spending, up to 10,000 miles per year.

The card earns 3x miles per $1 spent on TAP Air Portugal purchases, 2x miles on ride-share services, hotels, and car rentals, and 1x miles on all other purchases. The card has a $79 annual fee.

Where Does TAP Fly in the U.S.?

In North America, TAP serves 9 airports from Lisbon (LIS): Boston (BOS)Chicago (ORD)Miami (MIA), Montreal (YUL), New York (JFK)Newark (EWR) San Francisco (SFO), Toronto (YYZ), and Washington, D.C. (IAD). It also flies to Newark from Oporto (OPO).

On routes to North America it uses Airbus A330s and A321neos equipped with lie-flat business class seats.

Final Thoughts

If you fly TAP Air Portugal with any frequency, this is an attractive promotion since it would fast-track you to elite status with the airline.

That could be interesting for U.S.-based flyers since TAP is a member of Star Alliance. Earning elite status with TAP could open up numerous benefits on Star Alliance partners, including United Airlines.
