Airport lounges provide travelers with an enhanced travel experience by allowing them to relax in a quiet place, away from the hustle and bustle of airport terminals, while enjoying complimentary food and drinks.

There is no shortage of airport lounge networks out there, from Priority Pass lounges to Amex Centurion Lounges, but in this post, we will be focusing our attention on Star Alliance lounges — including how you can access them, where you will find them, and what they offer to travelers.

How To Access Star Alliance Lounges

Like all airport lounge networks, there are requirements that you must meet in order to visit them. While there are ways to get into select Star Alliance lounges, like having a United Club membership, there are really only 3 ways to access every U.S. Star Alliance lounge:

1. Flying long-haul first class with a Star Alliance airline
2. Flying long-haul business class with a Star Alliance airline
3. Having Star Alliance Gold status

Further, if you have Star Alliance Gold status you are able to bring 1 guest that is traveling on your same flight.

How To Get Star Alliance Gold Status

There are currently 26 Star Alliance member airlines, and each offers its own loyalty program that can get you Star Alliance Gold status. In the table below, you can see what status level you need to reach with any Star Alliance member airline in order to receive Star Alliance Gold.

Hot Tip: If you reach Star Alliance Gold status through the United MileagePlus program, you may only access United Clubs within the U.S. when departing from that airport on an international Star Alliance flight, not when departing on a domestic flight with United.

Star Alliance Lounge Food and Amenities

While the exact food and amenities you’ll find in Star Alliance lounges might vary greatly based on the type and size of the lounge, you can expect to have access to free food and beverage options (including alcohol), free Wi-Fi, and seating options for you to kick back and relax in before your flight.

There are some lounges, though, that might offer more premium food and beverage options, along with amenities like business centers, family rooms, and shower facilities.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a Star Alliance frequent flyer, having such a large network of Star Alliance lounges available to you is a huge benefit. Of course, the only downside is that you’ll either need to fly in business class, first class, or have Star Alliance Gold status in order to visit them with any sort of regularity.
