United is putting Venezuela back on its map with the announcement of a new nonstop service from Houston (IAH) to Caracas (CCS).

The daily service, starting on August 11, has been made possible by the Department of Transport’s recent U-turn on its ban on flights between the U.S. and Venezuela.

United’s New Route to Caracas, Venezuela

The resumption of service to Venezuela in August will be the first time United has flown to the South American country in over 9 years. It will be operated by the airline’s fleet of Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft.

The route’s current schedule is as follows:

Tickets are on sale now via United’s website and app, where the cheapest basic economy round-trip fare I could find for the relatively short flight is a whopping $1,159. As most passengers on this flight will likely have their tickets paid for by their companies, as there will be a lot of business travelers, this shouldn’t pose any financial questions for United.

“This specific flight will be critical to ferrying oil sector workers into the country as the U.S. and Venezuela work together to expand production and generate new economic opportunities,” said Sean P. Duffy, U.S. transportation secretary.

At the time of writing, United hasn’t released any award availability for the route.

As this will be United’s only flight to Caracas, travelers living elsewhere in the U.S. will have to take a connecting flight. This would be fine for those living to the west of Houston, as it’s kind of en route. However, for those living east of Houston planning travel to Caracas, especially around cities like Boston and New York, it would be more practical to fly American and connect onto its recently inaugurated nonstop service from Miami (MIA).

Hot Tip:

It’s not just the U.S. that is reinstating connectivity to Caracas. Just yesterday Qatar Airways announced it will launch the only nonstop between the Venezuelan capital and the Middle East.

Final Thoughts

United is the second airline to announce the resumption of commercial service from the U.S. to Venezuela. While the new route’s purpose is mainly to provide access for U.S. oil industry workers to the oil-rich South American nation, it’s still a step in the direction of improving air connectivity for Venezuela.

Only time will tell whether Delta will follow suit with a route from its closest hub, Atlanta (ATL).
