Everyone loves earning rewards on their purchases. Banks know this, which is why they use these rewards to lure you into doing business with them. And the newest competitor to enter a card is U.S. Bank, whose upcoming U.S. Bank Shopper Rewards™ Visa Signature® Card offers up to 6% cash-back at many popular retailers. Let’s take a look.

The U.S. Bank Shopper Rewards card isn’t released yet; as of now, you have the ability to join a waitlist for more information. However, the card’s page offers some details as to what cardholders can expect. Specifically, you’ll be able to earn 6% cash-back on up to $1,500 in purchases each quarter (from eligible retailers) and 3% cash-back in purchases up to $1,500 in a designated category. You’ll need to specify which retailers and which category you’d like the elevated earnings, but this can be altered every quarter.

Here are some examples of retailers that are eligible for that 6% return:

  • Ace Hardware
  • Amazon.com
  • Anthropologie
  • Apple
  • Bed, Bath, & Beyond
  • Best Buy
  • Chewy.com
  • Crate & Barrel
  • Disney
  • Home Depot
  • Ikea
  • Kohl’s
  • Lowe’s
  • Lululemon
  • Macy’s
  • Menards
  • Nordstrom
  • Pottery Barn
  • QVC
  • Restoration Hardware
  • Target
  • Walmart
  • Wayfair.com
  • Williams Sonoma

As you can see, there are some very lucrative options on here, as well as options that we don’t normally see for elevated rewards. Sure, you can get a 5% discount with the Target RedCard™ and a 5% return by using the Prime Visa Card, but this card beats those earnings — plus the ability to change your designated retailer each quarter gives you maximum flexibility.

You’ll also be able to earn 5.5% cash-back on prepaid rental cars and hotels booked with U.S. Bank’s travel portal, though we don’t generally recommend doing this. Both hotels and rental car companies will not honor elite status benefits (or allow you to earn elite status credits) when booking through third parties like this.

The 3% cash-back categories for the card include gas, EV charging, wholesale clubs (like Costco and Sam’s Club), and home utilities. These are all very strong categories, though the $1,500 limitation for earnings is a bit constraining.

Finally, the card will earn 1.5% cash-back on all other purchases, which rivals card offerings such as the Chase Freedom Unlimited®.

While there’s no announcement as to the card’s annual fee, it’s likely that it’ll also be a card without an additional annual fee. This is in line with other cash-back cards on the market, but we’ll see what happens when the product launches.

Final Thoughts

U.S. Bank’s newest credit card, the U.S. Bank Shopper Rewards card, aims to shake up the cash-back credit card market with a best-in-class offering on select retailers. Although rewards are limited by a quarterly purchase maximum, you’ll still see strong earnings with a variety of common businesses. Applications aren’t open yet, but you can join the waitlist for more information if you’re interested in the card.
