Paying my credit card balances in full each month is one of the most important credit card rules I follow. I avoid carrying a balance month to month, but 0% APR offers are a clear exception, and I strategically carry balances when I know I won’t have to pay interest.

Instead of paying thousands of dollars at once for expenses such as car repairs, home improvements, or annual memberships, I use 0% APR offers to spread those payments across several months with no interest or dipping into savings — and I can earn rewards at the same time.

Why I Usually Pay My Credit Cards in Full

I use credit cards for everyday purchases and treat them as a way to earn rewards on expenses that are within my budget, not as extra spending power. I pay my statement balances in full by the due date each month, so I don’t have to pay interest on groceries, gas, and the rest of life’s incidentals.

Carrying a balance and paying interest would quickly outweigh my rewards earnings. A card earning 2% cash-back can’t compete with a 20% APR.

But when the interest rate is 0%, even temporarily, the math changes.

When I Use 0% APR Offers

A 0% introductory APR credit card offers a temporary interest-free period to pay off purchases. I usually get 0% cards with a 12-month 0% APR, which gives me a year to make monthly payments and clear the balance before interest applies. I take the balance and divide it by 12 to determine how much I need to pay each month to reach that interest-free goal before the 0% APR expires.

Using a 0% APR offer helps when I have unusual expenses that, if paid in full, might strain my monthly budget or require me to dip into savings.

Large, Unexpected Expenses

I have an emergency savings account that I haven’t touched in years because I use 0% APR cards for emergencies instead. When I needed to pay for unexpected car repairs, I got an instant-use 0% APR card: the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, which offers 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months from the date of account opening. After that, 19.74%-28.74% variable APR (rates & fees).

I had the money available, but using a 0% APR card allowed me to distribute the expense over several months instead of dipping into emergency savings. If my monthly cash flow can’t cover the payments I need to clear the balance before interest applies, I can use savings to make the payments. But I would much rather leave my savings alone to accumulate interest and make interest-free payments on my card, rather than rebuilding my savings later.

Hot Tip:

The Blue Cash Everyday card and Chase Freedom Unlimited® are 0% APR cards with instant-issue features. These cards can come in handy if you have an unexpected expense that you need to pay for the same day you get approved.

Large, Planned Purchases

Even when expenses aren’t a surprise, a 0% offer can help make large expenses easier to handle. Purchases such as home improvements can be significant expenses that aren’t part of my everyday budget. But I can build monthly payments into my regular budget, and having a 0% APR gives me flexibility to pay it off in full or over time. The 0% APR period can also help me schedule when we will tackle projects. For example, I paid off the 0% APR card I used to install flooring before using a new 0% APR card to upgrade appliances.

Annual Memberships

I sometimes use 0% cards to avoid financing charges for annual memberships. For example, my family uses a Thousand Trails Cabin Pass membership to stay at campgrounds throughout the U.S. It costs $1,795 annually if paid in full or $2,100 if paid monthly — a $305 difference.

If I pay the membership fee in full using a 12-month 0% APR card, I can still pay monthly without paying finance charges.

When I Don’t Use 0% APR Offers

Not every purchase needs a financing strategy. Along with smaller purchases that don’t need payments spread out, everyday expenses that already fit into my budget don’t go on 0% APR cards. I also avoid 0% APR offers when I’m already managing multiple promotional balances, and I consider whether using a different rewards card could give me more value than a 0% APR card.

Hot Tip:

It’s smart to avoid opening new credit cards — even 0% APR cards — if you plan to apply for a mortgage or car loan and want to keep new inquiries and credit utilization low.

I Earn Rewards While Paying 0% Interest

Interest-free flexibility is the biggest benefit of using 0% APR cards, but rewards sweeten the deal. The Amex Blue Cash Everyday card offers up to $200 cash-back after you spend $2,000 within the first 6 months of card membership. If I use it to pay off a $2,000 expense, I can get $200 cash-back and earn 1% on the purchase, which equals $20.

That’s essentially a $220 discount, as long as I make at least the minimum payment each month and clear the balance before the 0% APR period is over.

Downsides of Carrying a 0% Balance

Even though I like the flexibility and rewards I get from using 0% APR cards, there are still some risks — mostly to my credit rating.

Credit utilization is the biggest issue, as a large 0% APR balance could take up a significant portion of a card’s available credit. The general rule is to keep credit utilization under 30%, but I like to keep mine under 10%. If I open a card with a $10,000 credit limit and charge $5,000 to it, that’s a 50% credit utilization, even if I’m not paying interest. It drops as I chip away at the balance each month, but a high credit utilization like that can temporarily lower my credit score.

Another concern for my credit rating is the impact of a new credit inquiry and a lower average age of credit. Opening a new credit card can cause a small, temporary drop in my credit score. Likewise, a new account brings down the average age of my credit card accounts. It also counts against my Chase 5/24 limit.

There’s also the temptation to overspend, as breaking up purchases can make them feel more affordable even when the total cost hasn’t changed. It can add up when multiplied across a few cards.

And if my payments don’t go to plan and I still have a balance when the 0% promotional period ends, I have to pay interest on the remaining balance.

My Rules for Using 0% APR Offers

I’m careful not to get in over my head with 0% APR cards. These are the guardrails I use:

  • I calculate the monthly payment first. Before I make a purchase, I divide the balance by the number of months to figure out how much I need to pay each month to clear the balance before the 0% APR period expires. For example, on a $3,000 purchase with a 15-month offer, I make at least a $200 payment each month.
  • I make at least the monthly payment. I typically stick to my payoff plan but always make at least the minimum payment each month so I don’t incur late fees or missed payments — and potentially lose my 0% APR as a penalty.
  • I don’t use 0% cards after the initial purchase. Once I’ve opened a card to finance a purchase at 0% APR, I make the purchase and then pay it off. These cards are entirely separate from the cards I use for everyday purchases, which makes calculating the monthly payment and payoff easier.
  • I don’t use 0% APR to spend more. I consider the full cost, not just the monthly amount, and don’t use promotional APRs to justify spending more than I planned to.
  • I don’t open too many 0% cards. How many 0% APR cards I can juggle depends on how much I need to pay on each, but I usually don’t have more than 2 or 3 0% APR cards at a time. I keep the combined monthly payment commitments manageable, so I’m not stuck with a balance I can’t clear at the end of the 0% APR period.
  • I track my payoff progress. I note the balance, the required monthly payment, and the date the 0% APR expires. I check in every few months to verify that I’m on track to clear the balance before interest applies.

Hot Tip:

Using a 0% introductory APR offer isn’t the same thing as deferred-interest financing. If you don’t pay off the balance on a 0% APR offer before the promotional APR expires, you only pay interest on the remaining balance. With deferred interest, you pay interest on the full original balance if you don’t pay it all off before the promotional period is over.

Final Thoughts

Paying in full is still my default, but 0% APR cards are an exception. They’re useful when I have a large expense I’d rather pay off over time, especially when I can earn a welcome offer and rewards along the way. But I’m careful not to use them to overspend, even when it’s interest-free.
