When you think of Chicago O’Hare Airport (ORD), Delta Air Lines might not be the first airline that immediately comes to mind.

ORD is 1 of United Airlines’ biggest hubs and the headquarters of its operations, based out of Willis Tower. But the Atlanta (ATL)-based Delta is jockeying for a larger presence by opening a brand new lounge.

Here’s what you need to know about this new lounge opening!

Beginning today, October 12, eligible passengers will be able to use the brand-new Delta Sky Club lounge located at ORD’s Terminal 5.

The 22,000-square-foot space is more than 4x times bigger than the previous lounge at T2 and can comfortably seat 400 guests. It has 4 showers, plus privacy sound booths and a family room. Like other Sky Club lounges, it has an expansive bar to enjoy beer, wine, and cocktails. But in a first for the lounges, it will also feature a dedicated wine bar.

In another first, passengers can board certain flights through 2 separate gate area boarding bridges connected directly to the Sky Club.

Aside from the new Sky Club, T5 is home to several lounges. They include the SAS Lounge, Swissport Lounge (open to Priority Pass members), and a British Airways Lounge, open to BA first and business class travelers, as well as Oneworld Emerald or Sapphire members.

Delta says it invested more than $50 million into T5, and its operations are now located in the same terminal as other SkyTeam partners. Other features include an updated check-in lobby and self-serve baggage drop at some locations.

“Delta remains committed to reimagining the entire travel journey, both on the ground and in the air,” said Ranjan Goswami, Delta’s senior vice president for customer experience design, in a statement.

Goswami continued to say that the airline is making “major terminal investments” at other airports in the United States to offer a more seamless check-in process and quicker connections.

Final Thoughts

This is excellent news for Delta flyers based in Chicago or those who frequently fly through O’Hare Airport.

While Delta doesn’t have as significant of a presence as the Chicago-based United Airlines at ORD, it does offer more than 3 dozen peak-day, nonstop departures out of Chicago’s largest airport to a handful of hubs like New York-LaGuardia (LGA) and New York-John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). Plus, with an expansion in the passenger experience with the addition of a new Sky Club, travelers now have more reason to consider flying Delta over other airlines.
