Finnair, the flag carrier of Finland, is one of the most formidable airlines in Europe. Indeed, the majority-government-owned airline commands most of the domestic and international air travel that goes in and out of Finland.
It’s also one of the oldest airlines in the world, and it hasn’t had any fatal or hull-loss accidents since 1963, which is a truly impressive feat.
Finnair maintains its central hub in Helsinki (HEL), as well as a secondary hub in Stockholm (ARN). With a fleet of 84 aircraft, it connects 116 destinations around the world to its 2 central hubs.
In 1999, the airline joined the Oneworld alliance, making it the first airline to be recruited into the new alliance. Today, it offers global connectivity to Northern Europe.
Finnair’s frequent flyer program is known as Finnair Plus. The points you earn from Finnair Plus can be used to book Finnair and Oneworld partner flights.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to amass Finnair Plus points as quickly as possible. There are plenty of non-travel ways you can rack up Finnair Plus points, even as a non-Finnish resident!
Sign Up for a Finnair Plus Account
Image Credit: FinnairThe first (and arguably most important) task you’ll want to accomplish is to sign up for a Finnair Plus account. Doing so will allow you to start earning Finnair Plus points.
Unfortunately, while the Finnair website may be aesthetically pleasing, we’ve found it to be buggy and difficult to navigate.
For example, sometimes the online form to join Finnair Plus doesn’t load properly. Nevertheless, please follow these steps to set up your Finnair Plus account:
- Visit the sign-up page to join Finnair Plus.
- Enter your name, date of birth, phone number, email address, and password.
- Check off the box that says I have read and accept the rules of the Finnair Plus program.
- Click Continue.
- Select your notification preferences and your Finnair Plus account will be successfully created!
- Write down your Finnair Plus membership number and keep it handy for whenever you’re earning or redeeming Finnair Plus points.
- Any time you want to earn Finnair Plus points with a partner, you’ll be required to present your membership number or card.
Hot Tip: If you’re having issues creating an account from the Finnair website, we recommend you download the Finnair Plus app and create your account from there.
Earn Finnair Plus Points With Credit Cards
For U.S. residents, the easiest way to earn Finnair Plus points is with credit cards.
That’s because you don’t need to fly anywhere or travel to earn points — you can earn points on all your credit card purchases, whether it’s online merchandise, tickets to the movies, or dining out.
1. Capital One Miles Credit Cards
In the U.S., the only way to earn Finnair Plus points with credit cards is to transfer Capital One miles to Finnair at a 1:1 ratio.
Transfers happen almost instantly. The minimum transfer amount is 1,000 Capital One miles, which will earn you 1,000 Finnair Plus points.
Here are our favorite Capital One cards you can use to earn Finnair Plus points:
Recommended Capital One Cards
2. Non-U.S.-Based Credit Cards
Image Credit: FinnairIf you’re based in Finland, there are loads of other ways to earn Finnair Plus points with credit cards.
There are 5 credit card issuers that compete for the co-branded market in Finland, which allows consumers to enjoy a variety of points-earning credit cards.
Here is the list of co-branded credit card products:
Card Name | Issuing Bank | Card Name | Issuing Bank |
Aktiiviraha card | Ecster | Finnair Plus Visa | Danske Bank |
Ecster Card | Ecster | Finnair Plus Visa Gold | Danske Bank |
Finnair Plus Mastercard | Nordea Bank Finland | Säästöpankki Visa Gold Credit/Debit | Säästöpankki |
Finnair Plus Mastercard | SEB
Lastly, if you are a member of American Express Finland, you can transfer your Membership Rewards points at a 5:4 ratio to Finnair Plus. The minimum transfer amount is 1,000 Amex points, which earns 800 Finnair Plus points.
Bottom Line: In the U.S., the only credit card option to earn Finnair Plus points is through transfers from Capital One miles-earning credit cards. Abroad, you can pick from 7 co-branded credit cards across 5 different issuers or transfer Amex Membership Rewards points from a qualifying Finnish Amex card at a 5:4 ratio.
Earn Finnair Plus Points Through Shopping and Dining
Finnair Plus makes it easy to earn points from shopping. In this section, we’ll show you how you can earn points on your shopping and dining purchases — keep in mind that almost all of these are limited to purchases in Europe.
3. Finnair Shopping Partners
Image Credit: FinnairFinnair Plus offers the ability to purchase goods and/or services to earn Finnair Plus points.
Here are the major shopping partners you can leverage:
Finnair Plus Shopping Partner | Accrual Structure | Finnair Plus Shopping Partner | Accrual Structure |
Belizia | 1 point per €1 spent | Moomin Shop | 3 points per €1 spent |
Lindroos | 1 point per €1 spent
Unfortunately, this list isn’t as comprehensive as other frequent flyer programs.
At Belizia, you will earn 1 Finnair Plus point per €1 spent on Sakari Sauso’s gloves, Samsonite and Delsey suitcases, trolleys, briefcases, and travel bags. All you need to do is show your Finnair Plus membership card and you’ll receive your points in 6 to 8 weeks.
When you’re shopping at Lindroos stores at Helsinki Airport (HEL), you earn 1 point per €1 spent. Specifically, the 2 locations are both at Terminal 2, gate 27 (Schengen) and gate 33 (non-Schengen). Just show your Finnair Plus card when you purchase and your points will be deposited shortly. If you don’t receive your points, you can email [email protected] to inquire.
Moomin Shop allows you to earn 3 points per €1 spent at locations at Moomin Shop Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, Moomin Shop Forum, Moomin Shop Lasipalatsi, and Moomin Shop Hansakortteli. All you need to do is present your Finnair Plus membership information and you’ll earn your points.
4. Finnair Dining Partners
Currently, Finnair’s only dining partner that earns points is TableOnline, Finland’s equivalent to OpenTable.
When you book a restaurant table TableOne, you will earn 50 Finnair Plus points per seat. Just enter your Finnair Plus number into your profile, and you’ll see your points add up quickly.
Earn Finnair Plus Points Through Travel
The clearest-cut way to earn Finnair Plus points is to travel! If you book revenue airfare on Finnair or any of its partners, you can earn Finnair points.
You don’t need to fly to or from Helsinki to earn, which is great news. Those based in the U.S. can earn Finnair Plus points through Finnair-operated flights, Oneworld partner flights, and even its non-alliance partners.
In addition, we’ll show you how to earn points on non-airfare travel bookings such as hotels and car rentals.
Let’s get right into it.
5. Airfare and Airline Purchases
Finnair Airbus A350 business class. Image Credit: Greg StoneWhen you book a qualifying paid flight (regardless of who it’s operated by), your Finnair Plus accrual will be based on the distance flown or zone and the booking class or ticket type.
This is a distance-based accrual system, not a revenue-based one. Some Finnair tickets have a ticket type (e.g. a name like Business Flex instead of a 1-letter fare class like J).
Here’s the accrual chart:
Ticket Type | Booking Class | Points Multiplier | Flights Within Finland and Northern Europe* | Flights Within the Rest of Europe and the Middle East | Flights To/From Asia and North America |
Business Flex | C, D, J | 250% | 2,500 | 5,000 | 20,000 |
Business Classic | R | 200% | 2,000 | 4,000 | 16,000 |
Business Light | I | 150% | 1,500 | 3,000 | 12,000 |
Economy Flex | Y, B, H | 150% | 1,500 | 3,000 | 12,000 |
Economy Class | K, M | 100% | 1,000 | 2,000 | 8,000 |
Economy Light | V, L, N, S, Q, O, Z | 50% | 500 | 1,000 | 4,000 |
N/A | A, G | 25% | 250 | 500 | 2,000 |
* Includes Finland, Copenhagen, Gdansk, Gothenburg, Krakow, Moscow, Oslo, Reykjavik, Riga, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Tallinn, Tartu, Vilnius, and Warsaw
For example, if you fly from New York (JFK) to Turku (TKU) via Helsinki (HEL), you’ll earn Finnair Plus points on the JFK-HEL leg and the HEL-TKU leg. If you had booked a paid business class ticket in I class, you’d earn 12,000 + 1,500 points for a total of 13,500 Finnair Plus points.
As another example, let’s say you booked a V-class ticket from Chicago (ORD) to Tel Aviv (TLV) via Helsinki (HEL). You’d earn 4,000 + 1,000 points for a total of 5,000 Finnair Plus points.
The story is a bit different for codeshare flights marketed by Finnair.
Here’s the accrual chart for codeshares, which are based on the actual distance flown:
Ticket Type | Booking Class | Points Multiplier per Kilometer Flown |
First Class | A, F, P | 300% |
Business Flex | C, D, J | 200% |
Business Classic | R, I | 200% |
Economy Flex | Y, B, H | 150% |
Economy Class | K, M | 100% |
Economy Light | V, L, N, S, Q, O, Z | 50% |
N/A | G | 25% |
For example, if you book a codeshare Finnair flight operated by Japan Airlines from Helsinki (HEL) to Tokyo (HND) in K class, you’ll accumulate 7,844 Finnair points in each direction.
6. Crediting Oneworld Partner Airlines to Finnair Plus
Image Credit: FinnairFinnair is a member of the Oneworld alliance, which means you can earn points when you fly on partner airlines around the world.
Your accrual is based on the airline, distance flown (in kilometers), your booking class, and your travel class.
Every partner has a different earning chart that Finnair Plus follows, so you’ll need to reference the correct airline when calculating your points accrual.
Here’s the complete chart of how many Finnair Plus points you’d earn from each Oneworld partner airline:

Each Oneworld airline has a slightly different earning chart, but the good news is that you can earn Finnair Plus points when you fly to London, Hong Kong, Qatar, Morocco, and so much more!
You can earn Finnair Plus points on a flight from New York to Casablanca, as well as a flight from Perth to Sydney! You can even earn Finnair points on a flight from Dallas to Hawaii!
So, let’s go through some itinerary examples to calculate how many points you’d earn:
- Suppose you’re flying on a one-way Qatar Airways ticket on a discounted business class ticket booked into the P fare class from Boston (BOS) to Cape Town (CPT) via Doha (DOH). The total flight distance is 17,917 kilometers, which means you would earn 13,438 Finnair Plus points.
- Now, suppose you’re flying on a round-trip American Airlines ticket in economy on an M-class ticket from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Honolulu (HNL). The total flight distance is 12,176 kilometers, so you would earn 6,088 Finnair Plus points on the round-trip itinerary.
To reference the Oneworld accrual list on Finnair’s official website, click here, scroll down to the Points from Oneworld Flights section and expand the selection for the airline you’re flying.
7. Crediting Non-Alliance Partner Airlines to Finnair Plus
Finnair maintains 3 non-Oneworld airline partners:
- BRA
- Juneyao Air
- LATAM Airlines
You’ll earn Finnair Plus points based on the airline, travel class, booking class, and distance.
Here’s the chart for non-alliance partners:
Airline | Travel Class | Booking Class | Points Multiplier per Kilometer Flown |
BRA | Economy | C | 100% |
Economy | D, J, M, E, B, K, P | 100% |
Economy | H, L, S, F, T, U, Y, W, X, N, Q | 50% |
Economy | A, O, V | 25% |
Juneyao Air | Business | J, C, D, A, R | 200% |
Economy | Y, B, M, U, H, Q, V, W, S, T, Z, K, E | 100% |
LATAM Airlines | Business | J, C, D, I | 125% |
Premium Economy | W, P | 100% |
Economy | Y, B, H, K, M, L, V | 100% |
Economy | X, S, N, Q, O, G, A | 50% |
For example, if you book a one-way LATAM business class flight in the D class from Santiago (SCL) to Buenos Aires (EZE), you’ll travel a distance of 1,141 kilometers, enabling you to earn 1,426 Finnair Plus points based on a 125% multiplier.
Similarly, if you book a one-way BRA flight economy flight in Q class from Stockholm-Bromma (BMA) to Gothenburg (GOT), you’ll travel a distance of 380 kilometers, enabling you to earn 190 Finnair Plus points based on a 50% multiplier.
To see Finnair’s official details on accruals via non-alliance partners, visit this link and scroll down to the section that says Points From Other Partner Airlines’ Flights.
8. Use Elite Status To Earn More Points
Image Credit: FinnairWhen you have Finnair Plus elite status, you will earn a points bonus for Finnair flights with the AY airline code, including codeshares:
- Finnair Plus Basic — 0% bonus
- Finnair Plus Silver — 10% bonus
- Finnair Plus Gold — 15% bonus
- Finnair Plus Platinum — 25% bonus
- Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo — 25% bonus
For example, if you’re earning 10,000 Finnair Plus points on a given flight and have Gold status, you’ll earn an extra 1,500 points.
This applies only to Finnair flights and excludes Oneworld and other partner airline flights.
9. Hotel Partners
Image Credit: FinnairAfter flights, the other major travel expense you’ll likely have while you’re on the road is hotels.
Whether you prefer to stay at boutique hotels or large hotel chains, you can probably find a suitable partner hotel that earns Finnair Plus points.
And considering how pricey hotel stays can be as a percentage of your overall travel budget, you’ll probably want to pay close attention to this section.
Here are the current Finnair Plus partner hotels:

10. Hotel Booking Portals
In addition to booking through hotel chains to earn Finnair Plus points, you can go through a hotel booking portal.
In many cases, these are better deals than booking directly with the hotel based on the value of the extra points you’d earn.
Plus, going through a booking portal affords you greater flexibility to stay at a smaller hotel that might not be part of a major hotel chain.
Here’s the list of available hotel booking portals you can use to earn Finnair points on your next reservation:
Finnair Plus Hotel Booking Portal Partner | Points Accrual Structure | Finnair Plus Hotel Booking Portal Partner | Points Accrual Structure |
Booking.com | 1 point per €1 spent | Rocketmiles | Up to 10,000 points per night |

Specialty Earnings for Finnair
Now that we’ve wrapped up all of the travel- or credit card-related ways you can earn Finnair Plus points, let’s quickly touch on some interesting and unique ways to earn these points!
13. Purchase Life Insurance From Fennia
Fennia offers a life insurance policy that you can purchase to cover yourself in case the worst happens.
You can earn 5,000 points for the first insurance period and 2,500 points for the second insurance period when you purchase a life insurance policy that covers at least €20,000 through Henki-Fennia’s online service.
14. Exchange Currency at Change Group
When you’re traveling in Finland and need to exchange currency, visit a Change Group branch to earn up to 5,000 points.
You can also earn Finnair points when exchanging currency online if you’re a Danske Bank customer.
15. Get a New Alarm System From Verisure
Verisure is a leading home security systems company covering Finland and much of Europe.
New customers who sign contracts when purchasing an alarm system will earn 10,000 Finnair points.
Note that this applies to new customers only, not existing customers.
16. Power Your Home With Solar-Powered Electricity Contracts
Fortum is one of the leading clean electricity providers in Finland. When you order a new electricity contract with 100% solar energy, earn 6,000 points.
You can also earn 3,000 points if you’re an existing contract holder and change to a 100% solar energy contract.
17. Buy Finnair Plus Points
The last way to earn Finnair points we will discuss is to simply purchase them.
You can buy up to 150,000 Finnair points per year, and your points will be deposited into your Finnair Plus account within 1 to 3 business days after the purchase.
Normally, you’d purchase points for around 1.4 to 1.5 cents each — but in December of 2021, Finnair Plus offered a tiered bonus of up to 100% when purchasing points, allowing you to buy points for as low as 0.73 cents each!
At the time, you also would earn elite status (up to Oneworld Emerald status through Finnair Plus Platinum status).
We don’t recommend proactively buying points, but if you’re short some points and are in a pinch, buying a few thousand points could get you over the hump to the redemption you’re planning on booking!
Final Thoughts
There is an assortment of ways to earn Finnair Plus points. You can do so through credit card spending (transfers from Capital One miles from the U.S.), co-branded credit card options in Europe, and transfers from Amex Finland.
Additionally, since Finnair is a Oneworld partner, you can easily rack up Finnair Plus points when flying on Oneworld carriers such as American Airlines and British Airways. You can even earn points on non-alliance partner flights aboard LATAM, Juneyao, and BRA.
Plenty of ways exist to earn Finnair points on other travel purchases, like hotels and cruises, in addition to a few niche shopping partners.
Lastly, there are a handful of specialized ways to earn more Finnair Plus points, like buying insurance policies, getting electricity contracts, and more.
