Key Takeaways

  • Hawaiian Airlines has a fairly standard baggage policy, with checked bag fees that are around the average ($35 to $45) of other major airlines.
  • Hawaiian’s overweight fees seem somewhat cheaper than the average.

Hawaiian Airlines Carry-On Allowance

1 personal item: Free
1 standard carry-on bag: Free

Size and Weight Restrictions

  • Personal: Size and weight are undisclosed, but Hawaiian states that the item must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you
  • Standard: 22 x 14 x 9 inches (55.9 x 35.5 x 22.9 centimeters) or 45 linear inches.

Lap Infant Carry-On Policy

  • The infant does not receive a carry-on allowance.
  • Passengers are permitted to bring a car seat on board and use it on the plane if there is a free seat (subject to the travel safety seat policy).
  • Strollers can be checked at the gate free of charge. Small, collapsible strollers may be carried on provided the item meets all of the standard size restrictions of a carry-on bag.
Hot Tip:

When talking about baggage allowances, many airlines refer to “maximum linear dimensions” or something similar. This is merely the number you get when you add the length, width, and depth of a piece of luggage. For example, if you have a suitcase that’s 26 inches long, 20 inches wide, and 16 inches deep, then its linear dimensions are 62 inches, or right at the maximum for checked luggage for many airlines.

Hawaiian Airlines Checked Baggage Allowance

All checked bags must be under 50 pounds (23 kilograms) and linear dimensions of 62 inches (157 centimeters).

For flights purchased on or after April 10, 2026, the fees are as follows:

Frequently Asked Questions

How big can a carry-on bag be on Hawaiian Airlines?

Hawaiian Airlines allows passengers to bring a standard piece of carry-on that must not exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches. A personal item is also allowed, but Hawaiian does not disclose any size restrictions.

How much is a checked bag on Hawaiian Airlines?

For the main cabin, Hawaiian charges $30 for the first bag, $40 for the second bag, and $50 for 3 or more bags. This excludes flights to or from North America, where the first bag is $45, the second bag is $55, and $200 for each additional piece. For first class and most international flights (excluding Australia and New Zealand), the first 2 bags are included within the standard ticket price, with 3 or more bags costing $150 to $200. For Europe and South America, you get 1 free bag in the main cabin and 2 free bags for the other cabins.

Is a backpack a personal item on Hawaiian Airlines?

Yes, Hawaiian would consider a backpack as your personal item as long as it is comparable in size to a handbag, laptop bag, or briefcase (so we’re not talking a 60-liter backpack here.)

What is the baggage allowance on Hawaiian Airlines?

Checked luggage must be added to your booking if you’re flying Hawaiian in the main cabin. The allowance for the bags that you add to your booking is 50 pounds (23 kilograms) and maximum linear dimensions of 62 inches (157 centimeters). The first 2 bags are free for first class passengers and many international flights (excluding Australia and New Zealand).

How much does Hawaiian Airlines charge for overweight baggage?

With Hawaiian Airlines, checked baggage that exceeds 50 pounds (23 kilograms) will be subject to excess fees. For bags that weigh 51 to 70 pounds (23 to 32 kilograms), the fee is $35 within Hawaii, $100 between Hawaii and North America, and $50 for all other routes (excluding Australia and New Zealand). Bags 71 to 100 pounds (32 to 45 kilograms) are charged $70 within Hawaii, $200 between Hawaii and North America, and up to $400 for international flights (excluding Australia, New Zealand, and the Cook Islands where bags of this weight are not accepted).
