Italy is one of my favorite places in the world to visit. All of my grandparents were born there, and I take every opportunity to explore the place my ancestors once inhabited.

But Italy is a country where I care slightly less about picking the best accommodation because I prefer to spend all my vacation funds on cuisine. However, if I use points to book my hotel, I have even more to spend on pizza and pasta (and some slightly higher-brow dining experiences).

The country is wildly diverse, with ancient cities, towering Alps, stunning seaside villages, rolling vineyards, and some of the most famous landmarks in the world. This means that you can find a hotel that might just be in one of these perfect settings, like overlooking mountains, the sea, or maybe even a centuries-old Roman ruin.

These are my favorite hotels in Italy that you can stay at using points, complete with a bit of context from Upgraded Points staff who have stayed at some of them.

1. Park Hyatt Milan

I stayed at the Park Hyatt Milan back in 2016, and I recall it being an elevated and luxurious property, with staff willing to attend to my every need and just steps from the famous Duomo. Since then, the property closed for a 2-year renovation, redesigning its 106 guestrooms and 25 suites, and reopened in 2022. Today, you’ll find Italian-inspired, elegant rooms in neutral tones, with understated art and marble bathrooms with large soaking tubs.

This hotel has a fitness center, spa, and a couple of restaurants, but the Mio Lab Cocktail Bar is one of the hottest hangout spots in Milan. And this property’s best asset is how central it is, near shopping, dining, and all of the city’s main tourist attractions.

Rates at this Category 8 property start at $967 or 35,000 World of Hyatt points per night.

2. 7Pines Resort Sardinia

7Pines Sardinia

Part of the Destination by Hyatt portfolio, 7Pines Resort Sardinia, is a gorgeous seafront property with rooms to fit every type of traveler. Families might like the garden rooms, while the Laguna rooms are for adults only and are set around the eponymous Laguna pool. If you’re ready to splurge, book a sea view room (and as a frequent visitor to Sardinia, I can say with certainty that the island has some of the clearest, brightest waters I’ve seen outside of the Caribbean and Southeast Asia — so a sea-facing room might be just what you need).

Other amenities include 3 pools, a quiet beach, beachfront dining and drinking, and plenty of hidden spaces that will make you feel you’re all alone in a beautiful paradise.

Rates for this Category 8 property start at $420 or 35,000 World of Hyatt points per night.

Hot Tip:

Fan of Hyatt’s Thompson properties? The Thompson Rome is “coming soon,” with chic and trendy rooms and a hip atmosphere. We hope it’ll be open by late 2025.

3. The Lake Como EDITION

Lake Cuomo EDITION

Is there anything better than sipping a spritz on the shores of Lake Como? I think not, which is why you should head to the Lake Como EDITION in Cadenabbia, overlooking the shores of Bellagio. The small lakeside villages of Cadenabbia and neighboring Tremezzo are filled with charm, and swimming, dining, walking, and relaxing right on the water is a dream at this hotel. Guest rooms offer lake and mountain views, decked out in wood and Calcutta marble.

The hotel is brand-new, taking reservations for October 2025, and no matter how chilly it might be at that time of year, I’ll still be dipping into the floating pool.

Rates start at $950 or 95,500 Marriott Bonvoy points.

4. The Gritti Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Venice

The fact that the name of the Gritti Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Venice, has the word “palace” in it should be telling — expect the decor and staff to match the regal vibes. The elegant hotel is decked out in ornate grandeur, with decorative wallpaper in rooms with chandeliers, velvety furniture, and luscious drapes. According to James Larounis, a senior content contributor for Upgraded Points, this hotel exceeds expectations, and breakfast, which you can enjoy alfresco while admiring the Grand Canal, is just as regal as the decor (a must!).

Other luxuries at this property include 24-hour-a-day room service, a canal-side location just next to a gondola station, and Sisley Paris bath amenities. Rates start just under $1,000 per night or 108,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

5. W Rome

One of Rome’s newer hotel additions, the W Rome is trendy and colorful, with bright colors and funky patterns that start in the lobby and continue up to the rooms and suites. However, according to Daniel Ross, a senior content contributor for Upgraded Points, the real highlight is the rooftop pool, a “sun-kissed space made for an oasis of calm after long days of touring in the hot sunshine.”

From a stacked hotel gym (and even a Peloton in select suites) to quirky art and chandeliers in the rooms and hearty Italian breakfasts at the rooftop restaurant, no trip to Rome is complete without a stay here. Room rates start around $490 or 95,500 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Hot Tip:

Learn more about what it’s like to stay at the W Rome with this W Rome hotel review, where reviewer Daniel Ross gets an impressive upgrade and spends plenty of time enjoying the rooftop outdoor space. And if you’re a fan of W properties, know that the W Florence has recently opened as Italy’s second W property.

6. Hilton Sorrento Palace

Set in Sorrento, the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, the Hilton Sorrento Palace is a sprawling resort amid citrus gardens overlooking the Bay of Naples. It’s worth splurging on a sea-view room, which has a balcony that overlooks the water. You can also spot Mount Vesuvius towering over Naples.

Sorrento is one of the most charming places I’ve ever visited, with plenty to do and see (I loved wandering to the shore and dining at local seafood spots), but if you prefer to stay back at the hotel, you can dip into 6 outdoor pools or 1 indoor pool, play tennis or paddle ball, or work out in the fitness center.

Rates start around $250 or 60,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

7. Picciolo Etna Golf Resort & Spa, Curio Collection by Hilton

Is there anything better than a hotel on rolling hills and vineyards? Image Credit: Picciolo Etna Golf Resort & Spa, Curio Collection by Hilton

Sicily is my favorite destination in Italy, home to gorgeous beaches, hilltop villages, and some of the best cuisine I’ve ever eaten. Staying at the base of Mount Etna amid vineyards and rolling hills is a dream — do it at Picciolo Etna Golf Resort & Spa, Curio Collection by Hilton.

I recommend a room with a balcony so you can admire the memorable scenery. The hotel has 2 outdoor pools and a sundeck, but the spa’s indoor pool is a sanctuary, with hydrotherapy elements and a cool rock formation.

Rates start as low as $155 or 45,000 Hilton Honors points in the off-season.

8. Miramonti Boutique Hotel, an SLH Hotel

Wake up to the most perfect views at this Italian hotel. Image Credit: Miramonti Boutique Hotel, an SLH Hotel

If you love skiing, hiking, or biking, head to Miramonti Boutique Hotel, an SLH Hotel, in the South Tyrolean mountains. The views of the snow-capped peaks from almost all of the hotel’s spaces are impressive, and the floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies make it even better. Wake up to these views and admire the mountains directly from your bed, from a hot tub on your terrace, or from the infinity pool.

And if getting into the outdoors on foot, on skis, or by bike feels too outdoorsy for you, you can sip tea while enjoying the views or use the hotel’s classic Alfa Romeo to cruise around the winding roads.

Rates start around $500 or 110,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

9. Six Senses Rome

Six Senses Rome
The Roman baths are a prime spot for relaxing. Image Credit: Six Senses Rome

I love Six Senses hotels, but I find it frustrating that not all of them let you pay with points. But travelers to Rome are in luck, because the Six Senses Rome does have award nights available (just starting to save up those IHG One Rewards points).

A 5-minute stroll from the Trevi Fountain, the hotel is close to other attractions like the Pantheon, too. Guest rooms are warm and inviting, decked out in wood and pastels, with city or courtyard views, but, like most Six Senses, the real treat is the spa. Partake in the Roman bath circuit, which includes access to a caldarium, tepidarium, and frigidarium, take aerial yoga, or learn about biohacking.

The rooftop restaurant and garden are ideal for a visit at sunset, where you can enjoy dinner and cocktails overlooking Rome’s ancient skyline.

Room rates start at $1,395 or 217,000 IHG One Rewards points.

10. Hotel Indigo Verona – Grand Hotel Des Arts

Hotel Indigo Verona
Soak in the art deco vibes at this Verona hotel. Image Credit: Hotel Indigo Verona – Grand Hotel Des Arts

A short walk from the Arena di Verona (a Roman amphitheater better preserved than Rome’s Colosseum), the Hotel Indigo Verona – Grand Hotel Des Arts is housed in a 1920s building built by royals. Guest rooms are inviting and fun, with art deco paneling and light fixtures, floral touches, and colors like pink and blue.

After a long day of touring around, grab a drink at the courtyard patio or relax and sunbathe on the sundeck. The hotel is one of the most affordable options on the list, and it feels like the perfect boutique spot, with only 62 rooms and shared spaces full of unique artwork.

Rates start at $145 or 27,000 IHG One Rewards points.

Hot Tip:

While many hotel brands have their own co-branded credit cards, getting a card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is ideal if you value flexibility. You earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points, which you can transfer to hotel partners such as IHG One Rewards, Marriott Bonvoy, or World of Hyatt.

Final Thoughts

From Sicily’s rolling vineyards to Rome’s ancient wonders, Italy has much to offer, but staying at just the right hotel can make (or break) your stay.

If you use points, you have more cash to spend on dining, experiences, and tours, so consider staying at one of my favorite points hotels for your next Italian adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to visit in Italy?

The best place to visit in Italy depends on your interests and budget. If it’s your first time in Italy, visit Rome and Florence. Fashion enthusiasts should head to Milan, an excellent base for visiting the Italian lakes (like Garda or Como), or towns like Bergamo or Verona. Venice is an ideal spot for honeymooners, and if you love islands, you could visit spots like Ischia, Sardinia, or Sicily.

Where should I stay in Italy?

Some of the best hotels in Italy, such as the ones on this list, are bookable with points. That said, many affordable B&Bs or home rentals exist on websites like Airbnb. When deciding where to stay in Italy, consider your budget, travel style, travel companions, and needs. For example, if you’re on your honeymoon, you might prefer a beautiful boutique hotel, but if you have a large family, a vacation rental with a kitchen and laundry facilities may make the most sense.

Do Italian hotels have air conditioning?

Most hotels in Italy have air conditioning, especially the larger hotels on this list or ones you can stay at using points. That said, smaller B&Bs, agriturismos, or hostels may not have air conditioning. If you’re traveling in warm or hot times of year and having AC is important to you, just make sure to confirm with the hotel if they have air conditioning before you book your stay.

Do hotels in Italy keep your passport?

No, hotels in Italy don’t keep your passport. However, they may ask for your passport to scan it. Afterward, they should give it back. Make sure to store your passport securely in the hotel safe to avoid problems with theft or loss.
