From modern design to great amenities, the Hyatt Centric Las Olas Fort Lauderdale had a lot to offer during our 1-night stay. We wound up there as a matter of convenience, but we were more than happy that we chose this hotel over others in the area.

Service also exceeded our expectations, and we were surprised by the upgrade offered despite my wife’s low-tier status with World of Hyatt.

Here’s a look at the things we liked and disliked during our late December 2024 stay at this Category 4 property.

6 Positives of the Hyatt Centric Las Olas Fort Lauderdale

My wife and I live in California, but my parents live in Florida. After visiting them for Christmas, we realized that flying home from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) was considerably cheaper, justifying the 2-hour drive. With an early-morning departure out of Fort Lauderdale, our plan was to find a hotel near the airport the night before.

When checking my wife’s World of Hyatt account, I realized that she had a Category 1-4 free night award that would expire soon. With that in mind, the Hyatt Centric Las Olas Fort Lauderdale caught our eye for a 1-night stay in late December.

Multiple positives occurred during our stay, including service that exceeded our expectations — such as the surprising upgrade my wife received while holding Hyatt’s lowest status tier. We also enjoyed the hotel’s on-site offerings. Those easily offset the 3 negatives I’ll address further down.

Let’s start with the positives, the things we enjoyed about the Hyatt Centric Las Olas Fort Lauderdale.

Hot Tip:

You can earn a Category 1-4 free night award with World of Hyatt in several ways, such as staying at different hotel brands with Brand Explorer or by holding The World of Hyatt Credit Card.

Great Location

The Hyatt Centric was 15 to 20 minutes away from the Fort Lauderdale airport by car, sitting in the Las Olas area of Fort Lauderdale. The hotel also was near the Museum of Discovery and Science, several harbors, and the Port Everglades cruise port.

Closer to the hotel, we found Huizenga Plaza with its nice fountain, the New River (a popular parking spot for boats), and multiple cafés, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs.

Fantastic Service

We thought the front desk staff was incredible. Xavier deserves a special mention for his friendly welcome while checking us in.

The hotel’s front desk.

He told us about the hotel’s amenities while taking a credit card deposit, and then he surprised us with an upgrade to a 1 King Bed Skyline View. These rooms are the same size as the hotel’s standard rooms, but they’re on higher floors for better views. Xavier gave us a room on the top floor, the 15th, as a reward for my wife’s Hyatt Discoverist status.

Considering this is the lowest tier in World of Hyatt, we were surprised and grateful for the upgrade.

But the service went beyond just the check-in experience. The valet attendants were consistently friendly and efficient, the employee at checkout was super friendly, and the cleaning staff we passed in the hallway always smiled while greeting us and asking if we needed anything.

Lots of Dining

Dining at the hotel was popular during our stay. Given the options, that wasn’t surprising.

Harborwood was near the lobby. It included both indoor and outdoor seating (including a pet-friendly patio) and a large bar. It was open for 3 meals a day and served drinks late into the night.

The hotel also offered Room Nine01, a reservations-only speakeasy operating from 5 to 11 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday. There also was the ELEV8 Pool Bar, which served cocktails and light bites near the hotel’s pool on the eighth floor. It was open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Excellent Gym

The hotel’s impressive gym was popular throughout our stay. It included the items you’d expect, like free weights, weight machines, and several treadmills. In the opposite corner, there was CrossFit-style equipment that was in use every time we went by.

In this area, there were items like ladders, heavy ropes, medicine balls, and more. Past this, in the opposite corner, were Peloton bikes.

Near the front of the gym, there was a water station with towels, mats, and sanitized headsets.

Modern Technology and Decorations

The hotel felt very modern. It opened in 2020, but our impression was that the Hyatt Centric Las Olas Fort Lauderdale leaned more into modern technology and decor than other hotels we’ve stayed at recently.

For example, the key cards had a QR code that we could scan to view information about the hotel, restaurant hours, order room service, and more.

The lobby also had 2 large seating areas, each with a large table that could serve as a coworking space with multiple outlets for laptops.

Hallways on the guest floors also felt much better than the typically lifeless hotel hallway. We loved the fact the ceiling was a color other than white or off-white.

Other modern touches? The sliding door to our bathroom and the artwork inside.

Plus, the step-in shower felt very roomy, and we enjoyed the backlit mirror in the center of the bathroom.

The bathroom provided everything we expected, such as individually wrapped toiletries, lotion, soap, and pump bottles of bath products in the shower. We also had a bathmat, spare toilet paper, a hair dryer, and plenty of towels.

But our view that the hotel leaned into modern touches didn’t end there. Rather than just a plain wall behind the bed, we found a black-and-white design that provided life in a room that otherwise had very subtle earth tones.

Each side of the bed also had a flip-out reading light, nightstand, lamp, and multiple outlets — including 3-prong and USB-A. On one side, we had a phone, while the other side of the bed had a digital alarm clock.

Across from the bed, we had a desk and chair, but the armchair in the corner with a movable tray was a unique element we hadn’t seen in many hotel rooms.

Near the door, there was an open closet with multiple cubbies to hold our belongings. There also were hangers, a large bench that was great for holding our suitcase, an iron, and an ironing board. We also found a small safe and a pair of bathrobes.

High-Quality Amenities

We thought that the amenities available at this hotel were great and abundant. How about complimentary Tesla rides to anywhere within a 2-mile radius? It was a drop-off service, only, but we still found this to be a unique amenity.

Our appreciation for the hotel’s amenities even included things we normally take for granted at hotels, like having bright and spacious elevators rather than cramped and dark ones.

The hotel’s elevators were refreshingly bright and spacious.

Hotel guests also had unlimited use of these bicycles to pedal around the local area.

We were surprised to find this open-air balcony on the eighth floor that had seating around multiple short tables.

Views here looked down Las Olas Boulevard, over Huizenga Plaza, and toward the numerous buildings on South Andrews Avenue.

Also on the eighth floor, at the other end of the hotel, there was a pool. It was long and skinny, ideal for lap swimming but also good for relaxing in the water. We loved the mural on the wall next to the pool.

Seating around the pool was abundant, with numerous lounge chairs and multiple shade umbrellas.

There also was a small firepit to keep people warm and provide a place to congregate at night.

And there were restrooms on the pool deck for convenience.

Lastly, the hotel had another unique amenity: a Champagne vending machine near the elevators on the ground floor.

3 Drawbacks of the Hyatt Centric Las Olas Fort Lauderdale

No hotel is 100% perfect. Despite the many things we liked about this property, there were a few elements that could be improved. These included the chair in our room, the destination fee, and the parking situation.

Uncomfortable Desk Chair

I’m not a fan of tall chairs, stools, or everything else that falls into that family of seats. I want a chair where I can put my feet on the ground, not rest them on a bar in a very particular position. Maybe I’m too picky.

But even if this chair at the desk in our room had been at normal height, it would still be uncomfortable. It was extremely firm. Add the odd height to that and I can’t imagine anyone wanting to work at this desk for very long. Good thing the hotel lobby had coworking tables with more comfortable chairs.

That’s not a good chair for working at the desk.

Destination Fee

The hotel charged a $25 (plus tax) daily destination fee for each room. This fee covered the Tesla car service, the use of bicycles, and items to take to the beach, including beach chairs, towels, and an umbrella. Those are tangible perks, and many guests likely use them.

However, the fee also provided less interesting elements, and a fee to get potential discounts always makes me unhappy. This destination fee included 2-for-1 entry to a nearby museum, a discount on water taxi sightseeing trips, a discount on yoga classes with 1 local partner, and a discount on airport transfers. Most guests likely aren’t using these discounts, and they’re probably paying more than they’re saving.

We were glad that we didn’t have to pay this fee, given that we were on an award booking.

Hot Tip:

“Destination fee” is just another name for a resort fee. A new FTC rule requires that hotels show you these fees early in the booking process, but it’s possible to avoid them altogether. When booking a stay using points with World of Hyatt or Hilton Honors, you don’t pay resort fees.

Cost of Parking

The hotel didn’t offer self-parkingit only offered valet parking, which was $40 a night plus tax. The cost of tips must also be accounted for.

While this price did include in-and-out privileges, I’m a fan of choice in parking at hotels. That said, if you’re a Globalist, the top status tier with Hyatt, your benefits include complimentary parking at hotels on award stays.

Final Thoughts

We enjoyed many elements of the 1 night we spent at the Hyatt Centric Las Olas Fort Lauderdale. From its design elements to the numerous perks available, the hotel has a lot to offer. And we had consistently great interactions with staff, including our unexpected upgrade at check-in. Those positives outshone the few negatives we experienced at the property, though there’s always room for improvement at every hotel.
