After exactly 10 years to the month, I found myself back in Indonesia — the second stop on my wife’s and my yearlong journey through Asia.

Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital — and now officially the most populous city on Earth — is one of my favorite places in the world. It boasts a rich history, an incredible food scene, and a wide range of spectacular hotels, many of which are surprisingly affordable.

Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), Jakarta is home to numerous world-class hotels across nearly every major luxury brand, many of them priced as affordably as you can find anywhere. After narrowing down the many tempting establishments, I booked a room at the Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta, widely regarded as one of the city’s best and most luxurious hotels.

Here’s a look at my March 2026 stay with the Mandarin Oriental brand and a few things to know about the property in Jakarta.

1. It’s an Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts Hotel

Mandarin Oriental hotels are among the most renowned luxury properties in the world, best known for their exceptional service, elegantly designed properties, and for blending local culture with the brand’s signature, Asian-inspired hospitality.

The brand has its own loyalty program, Fans of M.O., but I only recently joined because its hotels are typically out of my price range. However, the Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta, is also an American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) property.

This presented me with an excellent opportunity to use part of the up to $600 statement credit for prepaid bookings with FHR or The Hotel Collection through AmexTravel.com, courtesy of The Business Platinum Card® from American Express. Note that The Hotel Collection requires a minimum 2-night stay.

I booked the cheapest rate to ensure the prepaid hotel credit applied correctly. My 1-night stay in a Deluxe Room, 1 King Bed room came out to just $157.06, including all taxes and fees.

Cardholders who book hotels through the FHR program can expect to receive additional perks, including:

  • Early check-in at noon (when available)
  • Room upgrade upon arrival (when available)
  • Daily breakfast for 2 guests per room
  • A complimentary unique property benefit
  • Guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout

Upon check-in, I was presented with a letter outlining the benefits for guests booking a room at the Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta, through Amex FHR.

The property’s $100 experience credit was redeemable at any of the hotel’s dining venues (excluding alcoholic beverages) or at the spa (excluding spa products). Since I almost never eat at the hotels I stay at, I decided to use the credit at the spa for treatments for my wife and me.

Bottom Line:

Booking hotels through the Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts program provides cardholders with numerous perks and benefits. While FHR rates aren’t always the cheapest up front, they frequently deliver a better overall experience and value — especially for short luxury stays.

2. It Has a Prime Location in the Heart of Bundaran

The Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta, is on Jalan M.H. Thamrin, right in the heart of Central Jakarta. The iconic Selamat Datang Monument, or Bundaran HI or Welcome Monument, is less than a 3-minute walk from the property.

Bundaran features numerous shopping malls, upscale bistros, and fine-dining venues. Many of Jakarta’s 5-star hotels, including the Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta, Grand Hyatt Jakarta, and Pullman Jakarta Indonesia Thamrin CBD, are within a 5-minute walk of the Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta.

The property is within walking distance of several Jakarta tourist attractions, including major shopping malls such as Plaza Indonesia, AGORA Mall, and Grand Indonesia.

The hotel is less than a 5-minute walk from the Bundaran HI Astra bus stop, a major point in the Transjakarta bus network. The Dukuh Atas BNI subway station is about a 10-minute walk from the hotel.

3. My Room Was Modern and Luxurious

As expected of an upscale hotel, the Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta, featured an extremely well-thought-out, luxurious room. At check-in, the friendly front desk agent informed me that the hotel had upgraded us to a junior suite.

As I entered the room, we were greeted by a sizable living room featuring tasteful, high-end furnishings, from sleek side tables to luxurious lamps. The living room had a 2-person sofa and a separate armchair, both extremely comfortable.

The bedroom was connected to the living room via 2 separate doors on either side of the wall-mounted television unit.

The king-size bed was exceptionally comfortable, with high-quality linens and pillows. Decorative throw pillows added a stylish touch, bringing color and character to the bed’s overall look.

The hotel staff even arranged towels in the shape of a birthday cake, with a letter addressed to my wife. More on this below.

The bed was extremely comfortable.

Additionally, the room offered impressive views of the buildings in Jakarta’s Sudirman Central Business District in the distance. It was fascinating to watch the city come alive in the late afternoon as Jakarta’s atrocious traffic gradually built up below.

The suite also featured an expansive bathroom with luxurious, high-end finishes. It was so spacious that it was easily larger than many hotel rooms I’ve stayed in around the world.

The bathroom also featured a large walk-in shower and a deep soaking tub. While I don’t usually use soaking tubs, I made an exception this time — it felt like the perfect moment for self-care and relaxation.

The bathroom was equally as nice as the rest of the suite.
Bottom Line:

Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with the suite. The room was incredibly spacious and relaxing, offering a feeling of refined luxury. The bathroom was massive and honestly felt like an entirely separate room.

4. Amenities Were High-End

The Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta, offered numerous luxurious amenities, including a full-service spa, a Club Lounge, a business center, a fully equipped, 24-hour-a-day fitness center, several meeting and event spaces, and a rooftop swimming pool.

The outdoor pool area was stunning, with sweeping views of the surrounding skyscrapers. Numerous lounge chairs lined the pool, each shaded by umbrellas to keep guests comfortable in Jakarta’s blistering heat. The swimming pool was extremely relaxing and immaculately clean.

Although there was no lifeguard, a hotel security member was in the area, ensuring guests were taken care of. Oddly enough, there was a massive screen near the pool that kept repeating advertisements and photos of past hotel events.

The property’s fitness center was quite large, with a wide range of cardio and strength-training equipment.

5. There Is an Award-Winning Spa

The Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta, also boasted a massive award-winning spa, aptly named The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta. It featured steam rooms and saunas for men and women, along with a long list of spa treatments, massages, and other services.

Best of all, the pricing was quite reasonable. While it may be considered expensive by local Jakarta standards, it felt remarkably affordable compared to the prices of international luxury hotel brands I have seen around the world.

Since we had a $100 property credit, my wife and I splurged on a spa treatment. We both had an Express Facial ($29.50 each), which included a deep cleansing, toning, exfoliation, and a mask.

In addition to the facial, I had a 30-minute Energetic Urban massage ($26.55) that focused on the neck, shoulders, and lower back. I walked away feeling incredibly rejuvenated, more refreshed than I had in quite a while.

6. The Hotel Has Several Dining Outlets

The Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta, offered 5 eateries: Li Feng, Lyon, Cinnamon, MO Bar, and Azure.

Li Feng is the hotel’s upscale Cantonese restaurant, serving traditional foods.

The layout of Li Feng reminded me of the many restaurants I dined at when I was living in China nearly a decade ago.

Lyon is the hotel’s French restaurant, serving classic à la carte French dishes. MO Bar is the hotel’s cocktail bar, and Azure is the property’s poolside dining venue.

My wife and I had complimentary breakfast at Cinnamon, the hotel’s all-day dining spot. The breakfast buffet had an impressive selection of Indonesian and international dishes. The food was tasty, though it could have been fresher. Despite the staff’s diligent efforts to keep the breakfast area stocked during the busy hours, much of the food still arrived lukewarm.

7. There’s World-Class Service Across the Board

The Mandarin Oriental brand is known worldwide for combining luxury, elegance, and exceptional service across its properties. Although I knew the brand was known for this, I did not expect the hotel to take it to such levels.

Before my arrival, a member of the guest services team emailed me to welcome me to Jakarta and the hotel. They inquired about any special requests and provided detailed information about the property. I casually mentioned that it was my first time staying with the brand, that I was returning to Indonesia after a decade, and that I had booked the property as a special getaway for myself and my wife, whose birthday was coming up soon.

When we arrived at the room, we were surprised to see that the hotel had provided a small birthday dessert for my wife, which consisted of a chocolate mousse cake with walnuts and dried fruit. It was delicious.

Happy birthday!

The hotel staff went the extra mile for my wife’s birthday, presenting her with a personalized card, arranging towels in the shape of a birthday cake, and even writing a cheerful birthday message on one of the suite’s mirrors with washable markers.

While we were enjoying breakfast, 3 staff members we hadn’t yet met surprised my wife with a small birthday dessert they had prepared just for her.

I was truly impressed by the hotel staff’s dedication. It felt as though every team member had been trained to make genuine hospitality the cornerstone of the guest experience. I’ve always believed that it’s the small, personal touches that define exceptional hospitality, and the staff delivered.

Although I have top-tier elite status with several major U.S. hotel chains, I had never experienced such thoughtful attention by any single property with those brands. Yet I got this experience on my first stay at this brand — it truly highlighted the exceptional level of hospitality (the brand is known for) that many U.S. brands struggle to match.

Bottom Line:

I found the staff and service at the Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta, to be among the best I have ever experienced. Every interaction with hotel staff was met with smiles and a genuine desire to help us in any way they could. Staff members seemed to enjoy their jobs and went above and beyond to ensure my comfort.

Final Thoughts

The Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta, is a terrific property that offers an incredible location, spacious guest rooms and suites, luxurious amenities, fantastic views, several dining venues, and exceptional service.

Even though this was my first stay with the brand, I felt like a valued guest. Perhaps it was the added prestige of booking through the Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts program, or maybe this level of attention is extended to every guest.

I would certainly consider staying at the Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta, again. One thing is clear: I will definitely make it a point to experience other Mandarin Oriental properties worldwide, even if it means spending a little extra.
