The author stayed as an invited guest of Park Hyatt Johannesburg. All opinions are the author’s own, and neither the Park Hyatt Johannesburg nor its parent company had input in any part of this review.

Few luxury hotel brands are as prestigious as Park Hyatt. Known for opulent amenities, exceptional service, and being Hyatt’s top-tier luxury brand, Park Hyatt hotels are a favorite of many travelers.

So when I saw that the long-awaited Park Hyatt Johannesburg in South Africa was finally open, I was eager to visit. Fortunately, Johannesburg was a stop on my Star Alliance Round-the-World (RTW) award redemption.

I had the opportunity to stay at the luxury property for 1 night in August 2025. Here’s a look at a few important things you should know before booking the Park Hyatt Johannesburg.

1. It’s a Bargain on Points

The Park Hyatt Johannesburg is part of the World of Hyatt loyalty program. The property is a Category 6 property, meaning that award nights start at 21,000 points per night (off-peak) and can be as high as 29,000 points per night (peak).

Many of the dates across the Hyatt calendar show standard season rates, which means that an award night can be booked for 25,000 World of Hyatt points.

According to our valuations, World of Hyatt points are worth 1.5 cents per point, making 25,000 points worth $375. Cash prices for the property are significantly higher (around $450), making this an excellent property to book using points.

Although the property just opened in July 2025, I do not doubt the hotel will eventually move to a higher World of Hyatt category, meaning bookings will require more points.

Hot Tip:

World of Hyatt is a 1:1 transfer partner of Bilt Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards.

2. It’s Private and Modern in a Historical Setting

The Park Hyatt Johannesburg is set in a restored colonial mansion and preserves its architectural heritage with modern touches and amenities.

The property is the smallest Park Hyatt hotel in the world, with just 31 guest rooms, including 5 suites. The rooms are well-designed and offer king-size beds and floor-to-ceiling windows. Many rooms also feature private terraces that overlook the garden or pool.

The rooms feature different art themes, celebrating South Africa’s diverse nature.

But the real highlight of my room was the high-end marble bathroom — it felt more luxurious than any hotel bathroom I’ve ever seen.

The bathroom featured a double vanity, a walk-in shower with overhead and handheld showerheads, and a motion-sensing toilet with a bidet.

3. There’s World-Class Service Across the Board

Although I have stayed at many luxury hotels worldwide, the service at the Park Hyatt Johannesburg was among the best I have ever received in a hotel.

Because the property is relatively small compared to many luxury hotels worldwide, there are more staff members per guest room, allowing for a more personal and attentive experience. The staff was incredibly welcoming, constantly smiling, and enjoying their jobs. At times, I felt almost overwhelmed by how eager they were to help with everything, but honestly, it just showed how amazing the service was.

The incredible hotel service also extended to the restaurant staff, who went above and beyond to ensure I had a fantastic meal.

4. It’s in an Ideal Location

Though Johannesburg is known for its high crime rate, the Park Hyatt Johannesburg is in Rosebank, one of the city’s safest and most upscale neighborhoods. Rosebank is north of the city’s Central Business District and about a 30-minute ride from O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB).

Rosebank is best known for being a mix of a business district, a commercial hub, and a shopping and entertainment zone with numerous malls, cafes, rooftop bars, fine dining spots, and nightlife venues.

The area is also very safe relative to the rest of the city, with numerous private security companies and active community patrols.

Hot Tip:

The Park Hyatt Johannesburg is less than a 10-minute walk from the Rosebank Gautrain Station.

5. Its Great Restaurant Is a Locavore’s Dream

The property features a single restaurant, Room 32, which focuses on foods sourced from around South Africa. Room 32 is open daily from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m. for breakfast, from noon until 3 p.m. for lunch, and from 6 to 10 p.m. for dinner. The restaurant features live-fire grills, which allow guests to watch chefs prepare their meals from the diverse menu.

Breakfast was an experience on its own, easily one of the best hotel breakfasts I’ve ever had. It began with a continental selection, which included breads and pastries from the bakery, a parfait, house-cured charcuterie, artisanal cheeses, and various fresh fruits.

Breakfast was beautifully presented and really added to the overall experience.

For the main breakfast course, I had the fynbos salmon roosterkoek, a traditional South African dish made with sourdough bread, salmon roe, hollandaise, and poached eggs. As you’d expect from a fine-dining establishment, the roosterkoek was absolutely delicious.

6. It’s Small but Features Fantastic Amenities

The property offers several amenities for guests, most notably a heated outdoor swimming pool and a fitness center. The swimming pool is at the center of the courtyard and features a small lily pond with various fish. A few pool loungers are around the pool for those looking to relax.

I wasn’t a big fan of the pool layout. Since so many rooms overlooked it, it felt too exposed and lacking in privacy. Still, having a pool is always a plus — even if it’s not perfect, it’s nice to have the option.

The property also has a relatively small fitness center in a second building near the entrance. It is equipped with Technogym cardio and strength training equipment.

Hot Tip:

The Park Hyatt Johannesburg’s wellness center and spa is expected to open later this year.

7. It Has a Cigar Lounge

One of the Park Hyatt Johannesburg’s most unique features is its cigar lounge. Here, guests can relax and enjoy some of the world’s finest cigars in an upscale setting.

The cigar lounge was one of the most intimate and relaxing spots across the entire property.

Although I know little about cigars, I was happy to see some world-famous brands on display.

Final Thoughts

The newly opened Park Hyatt Johannesburg is a fantastic, high-end World of Hyatt property with a refined elegance that you’d expect at a Park Hyatt hotel.

The property is quite small, but it provides an intimate and peaceful hotel experience. Best of all, World of Hyatt members can book the stay using points, and there is excellent award availability for the foreseeable future.

I plan to visit Johannesburg again in 2026 with my wife and already have plans to return to the Park Hyatt Johannesburg.
