Is it too on-the-nose if I start a hotel review by saying I loved the property?

I visited the Portuguese Azores for the first time and spent 5 nights at Senhora da Rosa, a boutique property that I booked through Hyatt’s partnership with Mr & Mrs Smith.

From a much-reduced off-season rate to friendly staff and incredible food, this hotel was a hidden gem. Highlights included the pillow menu (yes), the friendly bartender, and the hot tub surrounded by pineapples (not kidding).

Here’s a look at my 5-night stay at this hotel you should definitely book.

Booking Senhora da Rosa Through World of Hyatt

Senhora da Rosa is a Mr & Mrs Smith property, and a partnership with Hyatt enabled me to book the hotel through World of Hyatt, giving me stay credit and the ability to earn or redeem points.

During peak season in the Azores, from June to August, cash rates are close to $400 per night. During my off-season stay in early December 2025, rates started at $102 — totaling $107 per night for a Standard Mini Double Room after taxes.

It was also possible to redeem Hyatt points here, paying 11,250 points per night. That’s a redemption rate of just under 1 cent per point — well below our average valuation of Hyatt points at 1.5 cents each — so I instead paid cash for my 5-night stay.

Hot Tip:

When staying at a Mr & Mrs Smith property, paying with The World of Hyatt Credit Card or World of Hyatt Business Credit Card can earn you up to 9 points per $1 spent at locations that participate in World of Hyatt — or even more points if you have Hyatt elite status and qualify for bonus earnings.

Location of Senhora da Rosa

Senhora da Rosa is on the island of São Miguel in the Portuguese Azores. By car, the hotel is about 10 minutes from central Ponta Delgada, the largest city on the island, and about 15 minutes from John Paul II Ponta Delgada Airport (PDL).

It is possible to reach the hotel by bus, private transfer, taxi, or bicycle. Most guests during my visit had a rental car, and so did I. The hotel was easy to find using Google Maps and Waze on my phone, despite my never having visited the area before.

4 Things I Loved About Senhora da Rosa

I have a lot of good things to say about this hotel and would easily return here. Let’s focus on the biggest elements.

1. Standard Rooms Were Spacious (While Simple)

There was abundant space in the bedroom, and I never tripped over furniture or the bed trying to move around the room. There was a large waterfall mural covering the wall behind the beds, and each side of the bed had a glass nightstand and a hanging lamp. On one nightstand, I found information about how to enjoy my stay and also bugs I might see around the property.

There was a padded bench at the foot of the beds, and I found bathrobes here. There was a TV across from the bed, and nearby information told me about the hotel’s services. Chairs and a small table were in the corner, and I found drinking water here that was refilled daily by housekeeping.

My room had a small patio, facing the grounds behind the main hotel building. It had a small table and 2 chairs and overlooked the pool and spa area. Volcanic rock walls provided privacy between each room’s patio.

My small patio.

The room had an easy-to-use digital thermostat, and I really enjoyed the abundant closet space near the door. Here, I found pool towels, extra bedding, storage, and a small safe. There was also a minibar with a small fridge and items for sale. A laundry bag and price list were also available.

Bathroom

The hotel maximized bathroom space well. Entering the bathroom, the sink and mirror were straight ahead. Counter space wasn’t abundant, but it was enough to hold a closeup mirror, drinking glasses, and a few amenities.

A shelf under the sink had hand towels, spare toilet paper, and a hair dryer.

The shower-tub was to the right of the sink, including a glass half wall and a high step to get in. The shower had both rainfall and handheld showerheads.

To the left, I found both a toilet and a bidet.

Those are important.

2. Food and Beverages Were Solid

Senhora da Rosa offers 2 restaurants and a bar. The rooftop outpost, Mirante Rooftop Bar, was only open for dinner on the first night of my stay. I wasn’t aware of that at check-in, so I missed my chance to dine there.

Magma Restaurant

The hotel’s main dining outlet was Magma Restaurant, on the ground floor of the main building. It offered breakfast and lunch daily and dinner 5 days a week, excluding Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Seating was available for 2 or 4; if a bigger group came, staff simply pushed tables together. As this was low season and the hotel wasn’t full, staff had half of the tables set up for breakfast and half for dinner, reducing the effort of changing the settings and tablecloths.

The dinner menu was posted outside the entrance in English and Portuguese. It included pasta, seafood, soups, steaks, and a few vegetarian dishes.

I had the lentil meatballs with a spicy curry on the first night, and this was incredible. I got it again on my last night at the hotel.

These were insanely good.

Breakfast was included for all guests, and it included a simple buffet each morning. Buffet items included cereals, yogurts, toast, and juices. There were also homemade jams, and the kiwi jam was fantastic.

There was an à la carte menu, as well, including cold cuts, eggs prepared various ways, fruit plates, waffles, and more.

Staff could also bring coffee, tea, and espresso-based beverages upon request.

Magma Bar

Halfway between the lobby and the Magma Restaurant, the Magma Bar was open daily from noon to midnight, including tea service from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. daily from October to May.

The bar had a full range of drinks, and seating included padded barstools, chairs, and sofas. The bartender was friendly and whipped up this fun mocktail when I asked for something without alcohol.

Didn’t know it included this cup!

Magma Bar also had a limited menu of food from the restaurant, focusing on light bites, salads, and this mezze plate of falafel, hummus, and plantain chips.

There was a small billiards room at the rear of the bar. To get the eight ball and cue ball, you needed to show your room key or pay €10 ($11.60) per hour.

3. Amenities Were Plentiful

Across its sprawling grounds, Senhora da Rosa offered a good amount of amenities.

Parking

There were 2 parking lots available, and parking was complimentary for guests. As I stayed in the main building, I parked in the front lot near the lobby.

Fun Public Areas

Along the hallway to my room, I found this small library under a skylight and the stairs to the upper floor. It featured old maps, globes, and various books for guests to read.

Immediately inside the front entrance, the hotel had decorated for the holidays, including a live Christmas tree and a manger scene.

Pool

The hotel had a small pool and a dozen lounge chairs on a wooden deck atop the spa building. On a post near the lounge chairs, there was a bell to call for bar service.

Hot Tub

Inside a greenhouse for pineapples, there was a large hot tub. This was a great spot to pass a rainy afternoon.

Spa

The spa building was under the pool deck, behind the hotel’s main building. Inside, it offered a full range of services, including massages, facials, a sauna, a steam room, and more.

There was even a small Pilates studio in here, and changing rooms were available nearby.

Shop

There was a small shop past the reception desk. Here, guests could buy locally made products like soaps, teas, handicrafts, and more.

Kids Club

A sign near reception indicated there was a kids club, but I never saw any activities or signs it was active — likely because of the low number of guests at the hotel during my stay.

4. Service Was Excellent

The staff was great. Full stop. From check-in to checkout, I thought the employees were friendly and helpful. On arrival, I received a helpful welcome letter with information about on-site amenities and restaurant hours.

I loved that my room indicated there was a pillow menu and I could call the front desk to discuss options. Rather than the standard pillows — the kind where using them and not using them felt the same — I traded for a memory foam pillow that was awesome. Too bad it didn’t fit into my carry-on bag …

Ah, a good pillow!

Staff also came around offering turndown services at night, accompanied by a little gift each evening. These included a candle, a cookie, or just a friendly note.

Because of my flight time on the last day, I settled my bill the night before. Senhora da Rosa doesn’t have an around-the-clock reception desk, and I knew staff wouldn’t be present when I departed at 6 a.m. While settling the bill, they offered to whip up something as a takeaway breakfast the following morning.

I appreciated the gesture, but thought this, plus a carry-on bag and returning a rental car, would be too much to juggle, so I asked for coffee only. There wasn’t a cup I could take with me, but staff provided bottled water, hot tea, and coffee — giving me options before I hit the road.

However, Hyatt Elite Perks Were Light

I booked this stay through World of Hyatt, and I have Hyatt Globalist status, the program’s top tier. Despite this, I didn’t get many elite perks during this stay.

Hyatt’s agreement with Mr & Mrs Smith Hotels means traditional elite benefits — such as suite upgrades, complimentary parking, and guaranteed breakfast each morning — are dependent on the hotel. They’re not guaranteed benefits for elite members on these reservations.

During my stay, I didn’t receive a room upgrade. All guests received complimentary breakfast and parking. Thus, my only elite perk was earning 30% bonus points on money I spent at the property.

Final Thoughts

I thoroughly enjoyed the 5 nights I spent at Senhora da Rosa in December. This was a low-season visit and my first trip to the Azores. I got a great deal on the room compared to the much higher rates during the summer, liked my room, and loved the staff. I also thought the food at Magma Restaurant was delicious.

This is a property I would absolutely recommend to friends, and I would easily return for another visit.
