My family and I stayed for 4 nights in September 2024 at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa on Del Monte Golf Course in California.

This hotel’s mid-century modern style is blended with a layout that feels like a 1970s-style resort. This combination made for a comfortable stay, and the hotel offered easy access to Monterey’s top attractions. If you’re a golfer, you’ll love that it’s located right on Del Monte Golf Course and even offers perks like discounted green fees to guests.

Of course, there are some things you should know before booking the Hyatt Regency Monterey. Let’s jump in.

1. It’s Reasonably Priced

Whether you want to book with World of Hyatt points or cash, the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa on Del Monte Golf Course won’t break the bank. As a Hyatt Category 5 hotel, it costs 17,000 (off-peak), 20,000 (standard), or 23,000 (peak) points per night. I paid 83,000 points for my 4-night stay. The cash cost would have been $1,493, resulting in a cents-per-point value of about 1.8 cents. That’s not bad, considering we value Hyatt points at 1.5 cents each.

There is a resort fee of $35 per night, which includes the following:

  • 10% discount at Del Monte Pro Shop
  • A 24-hour fitness center with Peloton bikes
  • Discounted green fees at Del Monte Golf Course
  • Electric vehicle charging stations
  • Gazebo, fire pits, and s’mores
  • Golf club storage
  • Heated pools, hot tubs, steam room, and sauna
  • Hammock garden
  • Outdoor game area with bocce courts, corn hole, and life-size games
  • Personalized guest request texting service for 24-hour assistance
  • Pickleball and tennis courts
  • Refillable water bottles and hydration stations
  • Shuttle service to Monterey Regional Airport (MRY)

Thankfully, the resort fee is waived for all World of Hyatt members who book with points.

2. The Rooms Are Basic But Comfortable

The guest rooms at the Hyatt Regency Monterey were in line with what you would expect at a Hyatt Regency hotel. My room wasn’t remarkable, but it was spacious and comfortable.

I used a Suite Upgrade Award to book a Monterey Suite With 1 King Bed. It had a separate living area, a bedroom, and 1.5 bathrooms in 685 square feet of space.

Our suite had plenty of room.

The hotel was renovated in 2021, but parts of my room, like the carpet, felt dated. The full bathroom was tiny, but it had a large shower.

The large shower was a plus.

3. There’s Only 1 Restaurant, But the Breakfast Was Excellent

Sea Root is the only full-service restaurant at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Spa on Del Monte Golf Course. I have Hyatt Globalist status, so my family and I ate breakfast here each morning, free of charge, and it was excellent. There was a buffet and à la carte menu (Globalists can choose either option).

Sea Root is the hotel’s only full-service restaurant.

Even if you’re paying cash, the menu prices were reasonable. The breakfast buffet was $28 for adults and $12 for kids ages 6 to 12. Entrees ranged from $15 to $29.

The breakfast buffet had one of the most unique features I’ve ever seen on a buffet — a make-your-own juice station that included a juicer with a choice of fruits and vegetables.

We loved the juice bar, which was part of the breakfast buffet.

We enjoyed the food, and the service was fantastic (the wonderful staff kept the coffee refills coming). I ordered my go-to hotel breakfast, avocado toast, which was the best I have ever had.

There’s also a coffee shop in the lobby and a snack bar by the pool called Bench Kraft, but it’s only open occasionally.

Hot Tip:

While there is only 1 full-service restaurant, this hotel also has a coffee shop, room service, and a poolside grill with varying operating hours.

4. You’ll Get a Reusable Water Bottle

Hyatt elite members (Discoverist, Explorist, and Globalist) are eligible for complimentary bottled water at any Hyatt hotel (many hotels offer this to all guests regardless of status). At the Hyatt Regency Monterey, there were 2 reusable water bottles in each room in lieu of bottled water, and each floor had a filtered water machine for refilling bottles.

The hotel provided reusable bottles and filtered water stations.

I love seeing fewer disposable plastic water bottles, so this is a great step in the right direction. Unfortunately, these water bottles are not dishwasher safe, so they ultimately ended up in the trash.

5. It’s Great for Families

This was a multi-generational trip that included my 10-year-old daughter, my mom, and my husband’s parents and sister. The hotel had a variety of outdoor games, including ping-pong, bocce ball, giant chess, and cornhole, that were fun for kids and adults alike.

The Hyatt Regency Monterey has 2 pools. While this is wonderful if you have kids who need to burn off some energy, it’s not a hotel I would book for a lay-by-the-pool vacation (it’s small and can get quite noisy when it’s busy).

The pool wasn’t huge, but it was functional.

6. You’ll Get Free S’mores!

When we checked in, I was offered a complimentary s’mores kit. The hotel has multiple fire pits where you can roast marshmallows for a fun treat.

S’mores kits are complimentary.

I was traveling with my 10-year-old, so the s’mores kit was offered to us at check-in. If you’re traveling without kids, you might have to ask for your s’mores supplies at the front desk. They are complimentary for all guests as part of the resort fee.

7. It’s Centrally Located, But You’ll Need a Car

The Hyatt Regency Monterey is in a great spot for exploring the area, as long as you have a car. There isn’t anything within walking distance of the hotel. Parking costs $20 per day, so you’ll need to factor that cost into your stay. Thankfully, parking is complimentary for Globalists who used Hyatt points to book, so I was able to skip this cost.

There was plenty of parking close to our room.

There are 12 electric vehicle charging stations that are complimentary for hotel guests, with a 4-hour limit.

If you’ll be renting a car like I did, you’ll be happy to know that the rental car area at the airport is small, so you won’t have to build in much extra time. There’s no need to get on a shuttle as you would at a big airport. I rented from Budget and took advantage of the $120 Avis/Budget credit on my Citi®/AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®.

Hyatt Regency Monterey is a quick drive to many of the area’s most popular attractions. It’s just a 10-minute drive to the Monterey Bay Aquarium (one of the best aquariums in the U.S.), a 7-minute drive to Fisherman’s Wharf, and just an 11-minute drive to an entrance on the 17-Mile Drive.

Monterey Regional Airport (MRY), which has direct flights from 8 U.S. cities, is only 5 minutes from the hotel.

Hot Tip:

If you’re not familiar with Monterey, you may not realize that it’s not a very beachy destination. The Hyatt Regency Monterey isn’t on the beach, and in fact, there’s only 1 beachfront hotel in Monterey — Marriott’s Monterey Beach Hotel, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel.

Final Thoughts

My family and I enjoyed our 4-night stay at Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa on Del Monte Golf Course in California. It had comfortable rooms, and the breakfast was excellent. Plus, it was centrally located, so we didn’t have to drive far to find things to do. This hotel can be a great option for a budget-friendly stay since it’s reasonably priced in points or cash.
