The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card is one of the most premium cards in my wallet. It offers numerous benefits, but its most valuable benefit may just be its free night award, which is given on each card anniversary.

Though I have considered canceling my card, the free night award reminded me why I have kept it in my wallet for so many years. I used the award at the Tokyo Marriott Hotel, an extremely convenient property, though not near many of Tokyo’s tourist attractions.

Here’s a look at my October 2026 stay at the Tokyo Marriott Hotel, along with some things to know about the property.

1. It’s an Excellent Use of a Marriott Free Night Certificate

The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card is Marriott’s premium offering targeted toward Marriott Bonvoy loyalists. It’s packed with numerous valuable perks and benefits, including complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status, 25 elite night credits each year (toward higher elite status), and up to $300 in statement credits per calendar year for eligible restaurant purchases worldwide (upon enrollment).

Undoubtedly, its most valuable (and my favorite) perk is the free night award, which is given on each card anniversary. The free night award gives cardholders a reward night at any participating Marriott Bonvoy hotel, up to 85,000 points. This is what I used for my stay at the Tokyo Marriott Hotel.

Marriott Bonvoy

Over the years, I have redeemed the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card’s free night certificate at some extremely expensive properties, including The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo, The Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho, and The St. Regis Chicago. In many instances, the free night certificate can actually be worth more than the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card’s substantial $650 annual fee (rates & fees).

Points redemption rates at the Tokyo Marriott Hotel vary widely, but the property is often available for 85,000 points per night. For the occasional dates that require more than 85,000 points, Marriott also allows members to top off free night awards with up to 25,000 additional points.

We value Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.7 cents each, making 85,000 points worth $595. Cash rates at the Tokyo Marriott Hotel average $360, though many nights exceed $600.

2. It’s Near One of Tokyo’s Major Transit Hubs

The Tokyo Marriott Hotel occupies the upper floors of the Gotenyama Trust Tower, part of the multipurpose Gotenyama Trust City complex in Shinagawa City. The hotel is set in a quiet, upscale residential neighborhood, yet still convenient for sightseeing and business travel.

The property is roughly a 10-minute walk from the Takanawa exit of Shinagawa Station, which is one of Tokyo’s 6 major transportation hubs (alongside Tokyo, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, and Ueno).

Shinagawa Station is a major gateway for the Shinkansen bullet train, the JR lines, and the Keikyu Line, which provides quick and easy access to Haneda Airport (HND). The hotel is also a 5-minute walk from Kita-Shinagawa Station.

Hot Tip:

Hotel guests have access to the complimentary shuttle between the Tokyo Marriott Hotel and Shinagawa Station. You can find the schedule here.

The property is also a stop on an Airport Limousine Bus route to Tokyo’s other international airport, Narita International Airport (NRT). The journey takes roughly 2 hours, but it can be inexpensive and convenient for those with large luggage.

3. My Room Was Modern and Refined

As expected of a higher-end hotel, the Tokyo Marriott Hotel featured a modern and refined room. Although I had originally booked a standard guest room, I was upgraded to a High Floor Deluxe room at check-in. This was likely thanks to my Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status, which I get courtesy of the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card.

The room was on the larger side, which was nice, as Tokyo is well-known for its smaller hotel rooms. It had some high-end furnishings, including side tables and lamps, which made everything feel more premium.

The king-size bed was extremely comfortable, with a plush, padded headboard, and the linens were also top-notch. Across from the bed was a massive dresser with a wall-mounted television above it.

There was also a spacious living area with a chaise lounge and a glass coffee table. There was enough room to unpack my 2 large suitcases rather comfortably.

Next to the chaise lounge was a large, round dining table that doubled as a workspace.

The room also offered tremendous panoramic views of the Shinagawa area and Tokyo Bay. In every direction, I could see cranes and construction vehicles, showing that Tokyo — already one of the biggest cities on Earth — is still growing.

The room also included a spacious bathroom. It featured a large shower and a high-tech Japanese toilet equipped with a bidet. While it did its job, the bathroom did not feel nearly as luxurious as the rest of the room.

Bottom Line:

Overall, I enjoyed the room. It was quite spacious and provided me with everything I needed. The bed was extremely comfortable, among the best I have ever slept in.

4. There Are Numerous On-Site Amenities

The Tokyo Marriott Hotel also boasts several on-site amenities, including a business center, several high-tech conference rooms and event spaces, 2 ceremony venues, a 24/7 fitness center, and an executive lounge (more on this below).

5. On-Site Dining Is Limited

The Tokyo Marriott Hotel offers 2 on-site dining venues and an executive lounge:

  • Lounge & Dining G is the hotel’s main restaurant and breakfast venue, with American-style dining.
  • Pastry & Bakery GGCo. is the property’s coffee house and also serves a variety of breads and homemade cakes prepared by a pastry chef.

The property’s executive lounge is on the 26th floor and is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Guests with Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status (and higher) and those who book executive rooms have lounge access and can have breakfast at the lounge.

Seating and the buffet.

The executive lounge also hosts a daily afternoon tea from 2 to 4 p.m. and an evening cocktail event from 5 to 8 p.m. The afternoon tea consisted of light snacks and desserts.

The evening cocktail offered many more dishes, including delicious chicken karaage, Japanese-style deep-fried chicken. The lounge also served ramen, though it was pork-based, so I did not partake.

Breakfast at Lounge & Dining G

Platinum Elite (and higher) guests could have breakfast at either the executive lounge or Lounge & Dining G. I went to Lounge & Dining G because a staff member mentioned there was a wider selection of food. The breakfast buffet had international and Japanese dishes.

Overall, breakfast was solid. There was a wide variety of food to choose from, and everything was replenished as needed. I still wish there were more Japanese options.

6. The Hotel Offers Panoramic Views

Thanks to its location high above the city, the Tokyo Marriott Hotel offers tremendous panoramic views of the city. The hotel boasts large windows throughout the guest rooms and executive lounge.

Though my room had excellent views, the executive lounge offered the best views in the hotel. From the lounge, you could also see the tip of the Tokyo Tower, as well as the Rainbow Bridge. You could look down and see hundreds of trains passing by around the Shinagawa Station area, including numerous Shinkansen bullet trains heading across the country.

However, arguably even more impressive than the train views were those of aircraft taking off from nearby Haneda Airport. With my Sony camera and telephoto lens, I was able to capture incredible photos.

Final Thoughts

The Tokyo Marriott Hotel is a solid property near Shinagawa Station. I booked a 1-night stay at the property using the free night award from my Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card. Thanks to my Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status, I was upgraded to a nicer room.

The property is especially convenient for those taking the Shinkansen bullet train from Shinagawa Station or those looking for a high-end hotel near Haneda Airport that can be booked with points.

I have stayed at many of Tokyo’s best Marriott hotels over my 10 visits to the city, and the Tokyo Marriott Hotel ranks among the best.
