Volaris also has a generous checked bag allowance with a standard allowance of 1 x 55 pounds (25 kg), which is 5 pounds more than the average airline.

Volaris does not disclose oversized fees, but luggage that exceeds 62 linear inches could be charged. Contact Volaris directly to query oversized fees.

For baggage fees related to special luggage (sporting equipment, musical instruments, etc.) please refer to Volaris’ policy.

Can I Pre-Pay for Baggage?

Volaris does allow passengers the ability to pre-pay luggage online.

To pre-pay, click the “My Trips” tab on the Volaris website to log-in to your booking and add the number of bags that you would like to purchase.

Credit Cards That Wipe Away Your Baggage Fees

While there are no U.S. credit cards that offer free checked baggage on Volaris, you may want to consider using the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card to pay your baggage fees. This is because you can use the card’s powerful Purchase Eraser tool to “erase” the purchase using your credit card points.

Using this tool, you can redeem your points at a value of 1 cent per point towards any travel purchases within 90 days of making the purchase — and yes, this includes bag fees. For example, an $80 excess bag fee would cost 8,000 points through the Purchase Eraser — certainly better than having to pay the charge out of pocket.

Recommended Cards

Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards Credit Card - This no annual fee card comes with a 20,000 mile welcome bonus (worth $200) once you spend $1,000 within the first 3 months. When you use your card for travel purchases (e.g. baggage fees), use your miles to pay off all, or part of, your statement! This is why we like this card.
Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card - The "big brother" card to the VentureOne® with a larger 50,000 welcome bonus (worth $500), when you spend $3,000 within the first 3 months.

Exclusions and Waivers

Frequently asked questions

Does Volaris charge for baggage?

Vuela Classic and Vuela Plus fares include a piece of checked luggage (55 pounds (25 kg)). Vuela Basic does not include any luggage, so bags would need to be purchased separately. The first bag for domestic flights costs Mex$750-1,200 and $40-75 for international flights.

How strict is Volaris with baggage?

Volaris has maximum size and weight restrictions for checked luggage, and as with any airline, could weigh or measure bags that appear oversized or overweight. This can depend on the individual check-in assistant, so there are no guarantees that your bag would be accepted without an excess charge.

Does Volaris check carry-on weight?

As with any airline, Volaris has size restrictions for carry-on luggage to ensure cabin safety. They may measure or weigh your bag so you must be prepared to check the item if it does not adhere to these restrictions.

Does Volaris charge for carry-on?

All Volaris fares include carry-on, weighing either 22 pounds (10 kg) or 44 pounds (20 kg) depending on the fare type. Vuela Basic and Classic passengers can purchase additional weight for their carry-on from Mex$300 ($50).

What is the carry-on size for Volaris?

The carry-on and personal items combined must not exceed 22.4 x 15.7 x 12.9 inches (57 x 40 x 33 cm).

Hey David, thanks for reaching out. We’re not Volaris — we’re Upgraded Points, a travel and credit card publication. However, it looks like Volaris will let you bring a gate-checked stroller if you purchase the Baby Combo. You can view more info on Volaris’ website.

    • Hi Leticia,

Yes, you should be fine to bring it. But keep in mind that it might be subject to extra fees based on the televisions size and weight.
