Volaris has flexible fares when it comes to carry-on luggage. When traveling light, Vuela Basic is the most cost-effective fare with just a personal item included, and passengers looking to split their carry-on luggage across 3 pieces, can opt for Vuela Plus.
Volaris also has a generous checked bag allowance with a standard allowance of 1 x 55 pounds (25 kg), which is 5 pounds more than the average airline.

Volaris does not disclose oversized fees, but luggage that exceeds 62 linear inches could be charged. Contact Volaris directly to query oversized fees.
For baggage fees related to special luggage (sporting equipment, musical instruments, etc.) please refer to Volaris’ policy.
Can I Pre-Pay for Baggage?
Volaris does allow passengers the ability to pre-pay luggage online.
To pre-pay, click the “My Trips” tab on the Volaris website to log-in to your booking and add the number of bags that you would like to purchase.
Credit Cards That Wipe Away Your Baggage Fees
While there are no U.S. credit cards that offer free checked baggage on Volaris, you may want to consider using the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Card or Capital One® VentureOne® Card to pay your baggage fees. This is because you can use the card’s powerful Purchase Eraser tool to “erase” the purchase using your credit card points.
Using this tool, you can redeem your points at a value of 1 cent per point towards any travel purchases within 90 days of making the purchase — and yes, this includes bag fees. For example, an $80 excess bag fee would cost 8,000 points through the Purchase Eraser — certainly better than having to pay the charge out of pocket.
Exclusions and Waivers
Volaris INVEX and INVEX 2.0 credit cardholders receive:
- An extra 22 pounds (10 kg) of extra weight on your checked luggage when booking Vuela Plus
- 1 checked bag weighing up to 55 pounds (25 kg) when booking Vuela Classic or Vuela Plus
Volaris INVEX 0, INVEX, and INVEX 2.0 credit cardholders receive:
- 1 carry-on bag when booking Vuela Basic

can you purchase a second check bag during the month of December 2019, on travels to Mexico?
Hi Judit,
That should not be a problem. Just contact the Volaris customer service team and they can assist you with that!
We have a two year old. What is your stroller policy?
Hey David, thanks for reaching out. We’re not Volaris — we’re Upgraded Points, a travel and credit card publication. However, it looks like Volaris will let you bring a gate-checked stroller if you purchase the Baby Combo. You can view more info on Volaris’ website.
Can I take a new television in a box as extra luggage?
Hi Leticia,
Yes, you should be fine to bring it. But keep in mind that it might be subject to extra fees based on the televisions size and weight.
Can I take a box of clothes? It weighs around 45-55 pounds.
Hi Jasmine,
Yes, as long as the box does not exceed a maximum linear dimension of 62 inches, and is no more than 55 pounds, then you should be able to bring it.
I want to fly to Mexico, how much is the fee for 2 boxes of 55 pounds each?
Hi Anita,
Where will you be flying from?
If I bring a new television in the box with me as extra luggage. Do I have to contact volaris before hand?
Hi Isaac,
You should not need to contact them before hand, but you can if it will give you piece of mind.
What are the dimensions for a carry on? I’m travelling from Tijuana to Mexico city.
Hi Lourdes,
The dimensions for the carry-on bag should not exceed 22.4 x 15.7 x 12.9 inches (57 x 40 x 33 cm).
I purchased a carry on bag during booking, but I’m wondering if I can cancel my carry on and instead buy a checked bag? Is this possible? If so, where and how can I do that?
Hi Karina,
For assistance with this, you would need to contact the Volaris customer service team directly at 1-(855)-865-2747.
Hello,
I bought some volaris Vuela básica tickets and was wondering if we are still entitled to a personal item and a carry on. My family members and I have already added on documented luggage but I have been seeing some information online that has confused me a bit. Hope you can help! Thanks in advance.
Hi Kathy,
A Vuela Basic ticket only includes a personal item that can measure 14 x 18 x 8 inches (35.5 x 45.5 x 20.5 cm). You can choose to purchase a carry-on separately and the fees are featured in this article.
Thank you for the response Catherine!
If I didn’t buy the baby combo for my child, he is not entitled to any baggage. Is that correct?
Hi Lupe,
That is correct.
Can I take an extra piece of luggage.
Hi Alonso,
You can, but you will be subject to excess baggage fees depending on the extra weight and route you’re flying.
If I purchased an additional carry-on can I cancel if I no longer need it?
Hi Lissette,
You should be able to, but you’ll need to contact Volaris directly in order to receive your refund.
We want to travel with a 42′ TV? How do we add the extra fee for it? Will it be as an additional luggage or as a sport equipment?
Hi Veronica,
A Tv will be treated as additional luggage and will be subject to additional fees based on its weight and the route you’re traveling.
For international flights, will I have to check in my bags again in the first airport I land in even though I’ll stay in the airport and the wait time is 5-7 hours?
Hi Lily,
Are you flying with the same carrier? If so then they should be able to hold onto the bags for you. If not then yes you’ll have to collect your bags during your layover.
In regards to this same issue, we are flying from the USA to MEX to ZIH. If we have to check in again in MEX, do we have to pay again for the baggage?
Hi Tracey,
If your entire trip was booked under the same itinerary/same carrier, then no you should not have to pay twice for your baggage.
I have a question on personal care lotions since I am under a dermatology treatment and I only have a carry on. Can I take more than 2 bottles? If so, what would be the size for each allowed?
I appreciate your response.
Hi Patricia,
Yes, you should be able to bring more than 2 bottles as long as they are each under 100ml a piece.
Can I take a backpack as my personal item?
Hi Christian,
Yes, you can bring a backpack as a personal item.
I’m traveling to Mexico and I purchased another luggage so I can bring on the plane. I no longer need 2 bags. Can I get a refund for 1 of them?
Hi Marisol,
Pre-paid luggage is usually non-refundable, but as we’re not Volaris, it’s advisable that you contact the airline directly to confirm.
I have bought the classic fare for Volaris, which includes a personal item and carry on. I was wondering if I can take liquids like facial care and lotion etc. In my personal bag? And if I were to bring a back pack on my flight home including my personal item and carry on would I have to pay for another personal item?
Hi Alexa,
It’s fine to transport liquids such as face lotion, providing they adhere to the 3-1-1 liquid rule. Each item must be 100 milliliters (3.4 ounces) or smaller and all items must fit into a single, 1-quart zip-closure clear plastic bag.
If you brought an additional backpack on your flight home, it would need to adhere to the maximum size restrictions of a personal item – 14 x 18 x 8 inches (35.5 x 45.5 x 20.5 cm), and the personal item from your outbound trip would need to fit inside this. Otherwise, you would be asked to check one of your bags as you can’t have 2 personal items in the cabin.
Hello, it’s two of us flying back to California, but both our checked bags exceed the 25 kilos limit. But not by more than 5 kilos. How much should we be expecting to pay for the fee?
Hi David,
Volaris charges around $80 for overweight luggage.
