Comenity Bank is a major credit card company that has 125 credit programs for many top U.S. retail stores, focusing heavily on store-branded credit cards.

While the bank is not a household name like some of the other credit card companies, they claim to have 40 million customers carrying a credit card or account offered by one of their banks.

Cards issued by Comenity Bank are generally easier to be approved for (and many are instant approval credit cards), even if your credit score is lower than average, which can be a huge incentive for those working to rebuild their credit to consider some of their cards.

Some cards won’t even perform a hard pull on your credit report, which significantly increases your chances of approval. What has become known as “The Shopping Cart Trick,” certain stores will provide you a credit card offer while shopping in their online stores.

The trick to getting the offer is that you need to not have opted out of promotional credit card offers and ensure that your pop-up blocker is turned OFF. Then, usually while in the shopping cart, a credit card offer from Comenity Bank will pop-up with an incentive to apply.

Be aware, if the offer requires you to input your full social security number it will likely result in a hard pull on your credit report, but if it asks just for the last 4 digits it is less likely to result in a hard pull.

Bottom Line: Comenity Bank offers lots of different credit cards, mostly stored-branded cards, that are easier to be approved for and some can be applied for without a hard pull on your credit report using the “Shopping Cart Trick.”

While their cards are not generally well known for their large signup bonuses, they do tailor their rewards programs and bonuses specifically for the customer. That means if they issue a card for a store you shop at often, their credit card rewards program is worth the look.

Comenity Bank did have one airline credit card, Virgin America, which had signup bonuses as high as 30,000 points, but with the merger with Alaska Airlines, Comenity have recently removed the application from their site.

Best Comenity Bank Credit Cards

Comenity offers so many different credit cards, but we’ve narrowed it down to the top 3 cards that we think will offer the best rewards for travelers and the everyday spender.

BJs Credit Card

BJs is a membership wholesale retail store that sells just about anything, including gas. Using the BJs credit card you earn 5% back on most in-store and online purchases, and no membership is required for online orders.

The 5% back is tied to My BJ’s Perks program and is dispersed in $20 increments and to be used in-Club within 6 months of being issued.

You will also save 10 cents per gallon when using the card at BJ’s Gas, and 2% back on non-BJ’s gas locations. Another bonus for use outside of BJ’s is the 2% back on all dining purchases and 1% back on all other purchases.

This card offers some great earning rates, especially if you shop and get gas at BJ’s, but also provides some nice offers for purchases outside the store-branded card. These rewards are still tied to the My BJ’s Perks program, so make sure you are able to use them in-Club before they expire.

Orbitz Rewards Visa Card

For those of you who can’t break away from a travel earning credit card, Comenity Bank offers the Orbitz Rewards Visa Card that is tied to Orbitz Rewards Orbucks, which can be redeemed for $1 per Orbuck toward hotel bookings on Orbitz.

This card earns an extra 5% on all Orbitz bookings, which can earn up to 10% back in rewards. All Orbitz Rewards members earn 1% for flights booked on Orbitz, but using this card would add an extra 5% to earn 6% back on airfare booked on Orbitz.

Hotels have the highest earning rates, racking in 10% in Orbucks when using the card to book hotels on the Orbitz mobile app and 8% when booking on a desktop. This makes it a great card to use for hotels where you can’t earn hotel branded points.

If you can’t live without hotel loyalty status, this card also gives you instant Orbitz Gold status which can provide free wi-fi, breakfast or waived resort fees at select VIP Hotels.

Orbitz also automatically enrolls you in their dining rewards program which gives 7% back on select restaurants, bars, and nightclubs.

Outside of Orbitz, this card earns 2% back in Orbucks on all purchases and offers a $100 statement credit when you spend $1,500 in the first 90 days of account opening.

All of these benefits for a card with no annual fee make it a great choice for travelers that aren’t loyal to the main hotel brands and stay at various hotels throughout the year.

Comenity Bank Cards with Easy Approval

The Comenity Bank credit cards with the highest rate of approval are those that can be applied using the “Shopping Cart Trick.” Again, this is when a credit card offer will “pop-up” when shopping at certain stores and not require you to enter your full social security number in the application process, which will not result in a hard pull on your credit report.

Being approved for a credit card will still add a new account to your credit profile, but using this method will definitely increase your chances of being approved.

The most popular stores where the Shopping Cart Trick can be used are Victoria’s Secret and Overstock. If you have a specific card you want, it’s worth trying the Shopping Cart Trick a few times to see if it works for that particular store since it has also been known to work at Buckle and Express.

Final Thoughts

Comenity Bank offers a lot in terms of quantity, with a wide range of store-branded cards specifically targeting and benefiting the regular customer. The rewards offered by these cards don’t come close to the value that the popular travel rewards credit cards reward programs provide, but they can provide some value if you can utilize these specific reward programs.

The best thing about Comenity Bank is that their credit cards are generally easy to be approved for. This can help people working on rebuilding their credit, or just getting started in building their credit. The “Shopping Cart Trick” can also be used to avoid additional hard pulls on your credit when looking to apply for additional credit cards.

I am thinking of applying for a BLAIR credit card because they have some items that I like. I do not have the world’s best credit but it is not the worst either. I appreciate the information found on this website about Comenity Bank.

Comenity Banks has been a Blessing for my credit. In July of last year, I started with Bealls Outlet. My credit score was only 545. When I heard about the shopping cart trick, I tried it and it worked!! First Victoria Secrets then Overstock. Both with limits of 250. I eventually kept trying and now have Bealls/Florida, Kingsize, Romans, Ann Taylor, Coldwater Creek, Goodys, Abercrombie, Boscovs, Express, Brylane Home,Lane Bryant, Pier , Williams Sonoma and Blair….. Some of these cards I will never use. But for the ones I do, my limit has tripled in the 7 months I’ve had them. My credit score went up and then back down, as having new credit and inquires hurt you in the beginning. I’ve been in between 545 and 630. My score for Blair was on a down side, around 588. Good Luck…

Comenity has been a rip off for me. This company charges OUTRAGEOUS fees, even when a billing is in error, NASTY customer service reps and they will try to ruin your credit, even when they and their partners make the billing mistake themselves! STAY FAR AWAY = do not use any store’s credit card that uses Comenity.

I completely agree with this statement. I have reviewed all the companies that Comenity is associated with and cancelled the two credit cards I have on their list. I take pride in my credit rating and this company is a joke. I will never shop anywhere they are associate with – ridiculous company and practices. Stay away.

I applied and was approved for a New York and Company Card with a limit of 400. Was going to purchase from Pier 1 on line and a pre-approval popped up. I was surprised with a healthy limit. I noticed that this card was also from Comenity so I came onto this site to check to see the sister cards. No problems for me thank goodness.

  6. I have used the pop offers and have had great luck. These accounts are my favorite and I have not had any problems with their customer service.

I found out through credit karma that I have an account with Comenity Bank. Opened Dec 2017. I do not who they are or with who it is with. I don’t receive anything from them and I don’t have a credit card from them. How can I find out who this account is for?

  9. Where were you Comenity Bank years ago when I was struggling to assemble a credit profile, lol? You are just a Godsend to the various communities. I have assembled a number of helpful accounts and I have a perfect payment on time history. Prior to my retirement I was in a high cash flow business and I had no need for credit of any kind. If there are any individuals viewing this posting, use the resources here and carefully plan out your credit profile and MAKE YOUR PAYMENTS ON TIME, and all will be well.

Several months ago I opened an account with J. Jill. Since then I have recently attempted to set up an online payment account. No one actually responds to my repeated request to contact me by email or telephone.
Instead I am advised via email to go to your website where, at first, I was told that a text message was sent to my phone. I replied that I do not text; please email or phone. I have now received multiples of this message. Comenity phone number poster for your very poor customer service is “no longer in service”. You have continued to waste my time. I will be cancelling my charge account with J.Jill.
