American Express Membership Rewards

If you’re approved for the Amex Business Gold card, you’ll see a personalized welcome offer based on your application details. Since the exact number of bonus points isn’t revealed until that stage, you’ll have the opportunity to preview this amount without impacting your credit score.

If you choose to move forward with the new account, your credit may be affected by a hard inquiry. However, you can still exit the application for any reason — whether the bonus isn’t appealing enough or you’re not ready to proceed — and still avoid any impact to your credit score.

The highest-known welcome offer allows applicants to score as high as 200,000 Membership Rewards points:

No matter which amount you’re eligible for, remember you’ll still need to meet the minimum spending requirement to earn the bonus offer.

Eligibility & Pop-Up Rules for the as High as 200K Bonus Offer

As mentioned above, not everyone is eligible for the maximum, as high as 200,000-point bonus offer. Beyond that, though, some applicants may not be eligible for a welcome bonus offer at all. During the application process, this is communicated via a pop-up notification:

As there’s no credit score impact at this stage, you can cancel the application or continue and submit, knowing that you’re not eligible for a bonus offer at all.

Ultimately, Amex determines your eligibility to earn as high as 200,000 points on several potential factors:

  • The number of welcome bonuses you’ve already earned with American Express, as frequently opening and closing cards after earning bonus offers may lower your chances of qualifying for future offers
  • Your overall account history with American Express, including how many personal and business accounts you’ve opened or closed recently
  • Your spending activity on existing Amex cards, as consistently low usage across your accounts could impact eligibility
  • Source: American Express

Another key limitation comes from American Express “lifetime language,” which is typically included in the application terms and generally restricts you to earning a welcome bonus on a specific card just once. Be sure to review the “Offer & Benefit Terms” for wording like: “You may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this Card or previous versions of this Card.”

That said, not all applicants will see this language or come across a pop-up notification. If these features are absent, you may still be eligible to earn a new welcome offer on the Amex Business Gold card — and the best way to find out is by completing the application.

How To Make the Most From Your 200K Points

After opening your new account and meeting the minimum spending requirements for the welcome offer, you’ll earn a hefty pile of Membership Rewards points.

We value American Express Membership Rewards points at 2.2 cents apiece, meaning 200,000 points are worth a whopping $4,400. Here are a few ideas:

You’ll continue to earn a bevy of points with the Amex Business Gold card with its flexible rewards structure tailored to business spending. Cardholders earn 4x Membership Rewards points in the 2 categories where they spend the most each billing cycle (on up to $150,000 in combined purchases per calendar year), with categories including eligible transit purchases, U.S. advertising, U.S. gas stations, U.S. restaurants, and more.

This dynamic earning model makes it especially valuable for businesses with shifting expenses, allowing you to maximize points without manually selecting categories.

Despite its $375 annual fee (rates & fees), the card offers practical statement credits and benefits for select business services and travel purchases (enrollment required for some benefits), along with expense management features like employee cards and purchase tracking.
