Many people assume an American Express card with no preset spending limit lets you charge as much as you want. It doesn’t. Amex offers 7 such cards, split between personal options for frequent travelers and business options for owners who need flexible spending. Each has its own fees, rewards, and eligibility requirements, so compare the picks below before you apply.

Quick Overview of the Best Amex Cards With No Preset Spending Limit

American Express offers 7 cards with no preset spending limit — 3 personal and 4 business — with annual fees from $95 to $895. For premium travel perks, the Platinum Card® from American Express ($895 annual fee; rates & fees) provides access to more than 1,550 airport lounges worldwide. For everyday rewards, the American Express® Gold Card ($325 annual fee; rates & fees) earns 4x points at restaurants (up to $50,000 per year) and U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 per year).

On the business side, the American Express® Business Gold Card$375 annual fee; rates & fees) earns 4x points in the 2 categories where your business spends the most each month (up to $150,000 per year).

Personal cards suit individuals and frequent travelers, and business cards are open to sole proprietors, contractors, and small-business owners, not just large companies. Good to excellent credit is generally required, and Amex offers a spending power tool that checks whether a specific purchase will be approved before you make it (Source: American Express).

How Does Amex’s No Preset Spending Limit Work?

Some Amex cards do not assign a preset spending limit when you’re approved, but no preset limit is not the same as no spending limit. American Express sets a flexible range based on factors such as your spending patterns, payment history, credit record, and stated income, and that range can shift from month to month (Source: American Express).

A cardholder with a stated income of $50,000, for example, may not be approved for a $20,000 charge in a single month. If you have a large purchase coming up, the Amex spending power tool tells you instantly whether it will be approved. Staying current on payments and using the card regularly may increase how much you can spend over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does no preset spending limit mean?

No preset spending limit means there is no fixed monthly cap set when the card is approved. It does not mean spending is unlimited. The amount available varies based on factors such as purchase history, payment history, and credit history, and it can change from month to month.

How does American Express determine spending limits?

For cards with no preset spending limit, American Express sets a flexible range based on factors such as spending patterns, payment history, credit record, and stated income. To check how much is available before a large purchase, use the Amex spending power tool, which shows instantly whether the purchase would be approved.

Which Amex cards have no preset spending limit?

American Express has 7 publicly available cards with no preset spending limit. On the personal side: the Amex Platinum card, Amex Gold card, and Amex Green card. For businesses: the Amex Business Platinum card, Amex Business Gold card, Amex Business Green card, and Amex Graphite Business Cash Unlimited card. There are also 2 invitation-only cards with no preset spending limit: Centurion® Card from American Express and Business Centurion® Card from American Express.

Does no preset spending limit mean unlimited spending?

No. Every Amex card with no preset spending limit still has a limit; it is simply not fixed at approval and can vary month to month based on factors such as spending patterns, payment history, credit record, and income (Source: American Express). The Amex spending power tool can confirm whether a specific purchase will be approved.

What credit score do you need for an Amex no preset spending limit card?

These cards generally require good to excellent credit. Approval also depends on income, existing Amex relationship, and overall credit history, so a qualifying score does not guarantee approval.

What is the difference between a charge card and a credit card with no preset spending limit?

A charge card and a card with no preset spending limit both lack a fixed monthly cap, but the terms describe different things. Traditionally, a charge card requires the balance to be paid in full each month, while a credit card with no preset spending limit can offer pay-over-time flexibility on eligible purchases. Many current Amex cards blend both features.

Does the Amex Platinum card have a limit?

The Amex Platinum card has no preset spending limit, but it does have a flexible spending limit that adjusts based on factors such as spending habits and income. It is not unlimited.

Does an Amex no preset spending limit card affect your credit score?

Applying results in a hard inquiry, which can lower a credit score slightly and temporarily. Because these cards have no preset limit, they are often excluded from credit utilization calculations, though on-time payments and overall account activity still affect a score. Amex also offers a way to check approval odds with no credit score impact before formally applying (though your score may be impacted should you be approved and choose to accept the card).
