What To Look For in a Business Credit Card for Balance Transfers

If you’re a business owner looking to consolidate debt from your existing business credit cards, you may benefit from a balance transfer credit card.

However, if you’re looking for one of these cards, you must look for a business balance transfer credit card — you cannot perform balance transfers from personal credit cards to business credit cards and vice-versa.

The 3 most important criteria for picking a balance transfer credit card are:

  • Balance transfer promotional APR
  • Balance transfer promotional period
  • Balance transfer promotional fee

So, for example, if a credit card is offering a 0% introductory balance transfer APR for 6 months with a reduced balance transfer fee of 3% instead of 5%, any balances transferred will not accrue interest fees for the first 6 months of card opening.

To expand on this, let’s say you have a balance of $25,000 and you perform a balance transfer to this new business credit card.

For the first 6 months of card opening, you won’t accumulate any credit card interest, and the fee for performing that balance transfer will be $750 (3%) instead of $1,250 (5%).

In general, most business owners look for a business credit card with 0% APR for the longest period, and this factor becomes more important if you’re looking to transfer large balances.

Another consideration to keep in mind is that you cannot transfer balances from 1 business card to another within the same financial institution.

For example, if you have a lot of debt on a U.S. Bank credit card, you can’t perform a balance transfer to another U.S. Bank credit card.

The 17 Best Business Credit Cards for Balance Transfers

Although balance transfer credit cards for personal use are relatively ubiquitous, business credit cards with 0% balance transfer APRs are surprisingly difficult to find.

In fact, it’s actually quite difficult to find nationwide banks that offer balance transfer business credit cards — most of them are regional banks.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at our favorite business credit cards for balance transfers!

Hot Tip: Almost all business credit cards that offer balance transfers have no annual fees, but they’re extremely bare-bones when it comes to benefits, so these cards are best used for the sole purpose of performing balance transfers!

Final Thoughts

Finding business credit cards that offer 0% balance transfer promotions is surprisingly difficult. Because nationwide banks generally don’t offer these products, your best bet is to find regional banks that service your local area.

Overall, the best business balance transfer card for the longest possible 0% APR period is the U.S. Bank Business Platinum card, which offers an astonishing 20 months without interest.

The only business credit card we found that also has a 0% introductory balance transfer fee to go along with a 12-month 0% balance transfer APR is the Edward Jones Business Plus card.

On average, balance transfer fees are around 3%, but if you do enough digging, you can find business credit cards with a 0% balance transfer APR for a whopping 18 months!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do business cards allow balance transfers?

Absolutely! Most business cards allow balance transfers, and some offer introductory promotions that encourage you to perform balance transfers. These promotions include introductory APR rates or reduced balance transfer fees.

Can I transfer personal debt to an LLC?

In general, you cannot transfer personal credit card balances to a business credit card. The reverse is also true. You generally have to transfer from personal to personal or from business to business.

What is a balance transfer in business?

In credit cards, a business balance transfer is simply the process of moving an existing business credit card balance to a different credit card. Usually, this is done to avoid accruing interest fees as the debt is paid down over time.

Do balance transfers hurt your credit?

In general, balance transfers neither hurt nor help your credit. Your credit utilization ratio is not changing overall since your credit score is typically calculated based on an aggregate credit utilization ratio. Since your cumulative balances are neither increasing nor decreasing, the effect of balance transfers usually cancels itself out.

What credit score do I need to get a balance transfer credit card?

It depends. Having a better credit score is almost always better than having a poor credit score. Different banks have different criteria for these balance transfer credit cards, but many of these cards can be acquired with less-than-excellent credit.

Which bank is best for balance transfer?

The best business credit cards for balance transfers are actually not the nationwide banks you’re familiar with like American Express or Chase. Instead, regional banks often offer excellent business credit cards for balance transfers, but you need to shop around to find the best option for your situation.
