The American Express® Gold Card has long been one of the most coveted midtier travel rewards cards on the market. It’s for good reason, as the welcome offer alone can be worth thousands of dollars in Membership Rewards points.

Over the years, American Express has also introduced positive changes aimed at making the application experience more transparent and consistent for customers. Features like Apply With Confidence and the new welcome offer structure allow eligible applicants to see whether they’re approved before accepting the card, helping reduce uncertainty during the process.

Here’s how the eligibility rules for the welcome offer have changed since 2014.

As of 2026

The Amex Gold Card recently moved to a variable, “As High As” welcome offer structure, replacing the fixed, blanket bonus offer it had for years — and it’s actually a positive move. Here’s the current public bonus offer, allowing eligible applicants to get an offer that could be As High As 100,000 points:

  • Apply and find out if you’re eligible for As High As 100,000 points after spending $8,000 in eligible purchases on the card in the first 6 months. Welcome offers vary, and you may not be eligible for an offer.

Before diving into the history, it helps to understand the broader framework American Express uses across its card portfolio today. Beyond card-specific application rules, these general restrictions apply to all American Express consumer and business cards:

  • You can have no more than 5 American Express credit cards at any given time.
  • You can have no more than 10 American Express cards without preset spending limits* (which includes the Amex Gold Card) at any given time.
  • You can only qualify for 2 new Amex cards in a 90-day period.

These baseline rules set the stage, but the Amex Gold Card with its $325 (rates & fees) also has its own layered history of eligibility changes, as detailed below.

*No preset spending limit means your spending limit is flexible. Unlike a traditional card with a set limit, the amount you can spend adapts based on factors such as your purchase, payment, and credit history.

2014 to 2018

Before 2014, there were effectively no restrictions. Cardholders could apply for the same card multiple times, earn the welcome offer repeatedly, and hold multiple versions simultaneously.

That changed in 2014, when American Express introduced the “once-per-lifetime” rule across its card lineup — including the card then known as the Premier Rewards Gold Card. If you’d previously held the card, you wouldn’t qualify for the welcome offer again, regardless of how much time had passed. Importantly, the restrictions were still siloed at this point. Holding the Platinum Card® from American Express had no bearing on your Amex Gold Card eligibility, and vice versa.

Each card’s lifetime restriction applied only to that specific card.

Hot Tip:

Similar to what’s been reported with the Amex Platinum Card, some data points suggest Amex’s definition of “lifetime” may not be truly permanent, with eligibility potentially resetting after roughly 7 years for some cardholders. Individual results vary, and this is far from guaranteed.

2018 to 2021

In October 2018, American Express rebranded the Premier Rewards Gold Card as the American Express® Gold Card, with refreshed benefits and a higher annual fee. Amex made clear that the lifetime restriction carried over. If you’d previously held the Premier Rewards Gold Card, you were ineligible for the welcome offer on the newly renamed product. The rebrand wasn’t a reset. Amex treated them as the same card for welcome bonus offer purposes, closing a potential loophole.

2021 to 2023

Around 2021, American Express introduced its now well-known application pop-up notification. This tool appears during the application and flags applicants who are unlikely to qualify for a welcome offer based on factors such as prior card history, account activity, and spending patterns.

The pop-up notifies you that you can still proceed, giving transparency in the application stage, but you won’t receive the bonus offer if approved. Choosing to withdraw at this stage means no hard credit inquiry is triggered.

2023 to 2024

October 2023 was a major turning point. American Express added formal “family language” to the Amex Gold Card’s terms, stating you might not be eligible for this card’s welcome offer if you previously had the Amex Platinum Card or its related variants.

For the first time, having previously held any version of the Amex Platinum Card could disqualify you from the Amex Gold Card’s welcome offer. The restrictions now flowed downward — the higher the tier of card you’d held, the more it could limit your eligibility on lower-tier products.

Also during this period, in 2023, American Express rolled out its Apply With Confidence tool, which allows applicants to complete an application and receive a decision — including a specific welcome offer amount — before triggering a hard credit pull. This proved especially useful for new Amex customers who hadn’t held a card before, giving them a clearer view of their eligibility before committing.

2024 to 2025

In 2024, Amex extended family language to the American Express Green Card®** (closed to new applicants), completing the top-down chain. Holding or having previously held a higher-tier card now affects your eligibility for the Amex Green Card’s welcome offer as well.

The practical implication: Application order matters more than ever. To maximize welcome offers across all 3 cards, the optimal sequence is: Amex Green Card first, then Amex Gold Card, then Amex Platinum Card. Applying in reverse could cost you a welcome offer.

Along with a major card refresh in July 2024 that brought fresh new benefits, the spending requirement also increased on the welcome offer from $4,000 to $6,000 — as part of Amex’s broader push toward sustained card engagement.

**The information regarding the American Express Green Card® was independently collected by Upgraded Points and not provided nor reviewed by the issuer.

2025 to Today

With the current opportunity to get an offer that could be As High As 100,000 points, applicants will find out the exact number of points they’re eligible for upon approval. This welcome offer process gives applicants greater clarity, allowing them to exit at any stage before accepting the account.

If you quit the application after previewing your welcome offer, your credit score will remain unaffected. That’s because American Express uses a soft credit check rather than a hard inquiry for this process. Your credit score may be impacted only if you decide to accept the Amex Gold Card’s welcome offer and open the account.

This is a positive change because unlike a traditional credit card application process, there’s no initial impact to your credit score, allowing interested applicants to feel more confident about their approval odds before deciding to move forward.

American Express Membership Rewards

However, as of April 30, 2026, the spending requirement has increased once again — from $6,000 to $8,000. However, applicants still have the 6-month time frame to complete the threshold to earn their bonus points.

Under this individualized framework, some cardholders have reported qualifying for a welcome offer on the Amex Gold Card despite prior history, suggesting the once-per-lifetime restriction may have softened in certain cases.

While the welcome offer can provide tremendous upfront value, it’s far from the only reason the Amex Gold Card has become a long-term favorite for so many travelers and food lovers. You can earn 4X points at restaurants worldwide (up to $50,000 per year, then 1X) and 4X points at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 per year, then 1X), which makes it easy to rack up Membership Rewards points long after the initial bonus offer is earned.

Beyond earning points, the card comes with a collection of statement credits and travel-friendly benefits (enrollment may be required).

Hot Tip:

Amex occasionally issues targeted offers that omit the standard lifetime restriction language entirely. These “no lifetime language” (NLL) bonus offers can make a welcome offer available even to those who’ve previously held the card, so it’s worth keeping an eye on your email and Amex account.

Final Thoughts

The welcome offer eligibility rules on the Amex Gold Card have shifted dramatically from an open field before 2014 to a once-per-lifetime rule, then to a rebrand that locked in that restriction, and ultimately to family language that now connects the Amex Gold Card to both the Amex Platinum Card and Amex Green Card.

If you’re planning to earn the Amex Gold Card’s welcome bonus offer, card history and application order matter more today than they ever have. Tools like the pop-up notification and Apply With Confidence at least make it easier to know where you stand before you apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I get the Amex Gold Card's As High As 100K welcome offer?

By applying directly on American Express’ website, you can find out if you’re eligible for a welcome offer As High As 100,000 points after spending $8,000 in eligible purchases in the first 6 months on the card. Welcome offers vary, and you may not qualify for an offer.

If you’re approved, you can view your specific welcome offer without impacting your credit score. Your credit may be affected only if you accept the offer and open the account.

Can you earn another Amex Gold Card welcome offer?

The best way to find out is to fill out the application for the Amex Gold card. American Express notifies applicants if they’re ineligible for the welcome offer on the Amex Gold card before running a hard inquiry on their credit report.

If you’re not eligible, you can exit the application without any impact to your credit score.

Why am I getting a pop-up notification that I'm not eligible for the Amex Gold Card's welcome offer?

American Express uses a proprietary algorithm to determine your eligibility for the Amex Gold card and its welcome bonus offer. Factors can include the number of Amex cards you have open (or had but then closed in the past), your credit score, and also your spending on existing accounts.

What are the spending requirements for the Amex Gold Card's welcome offer?

Approved applicants of the Amex Gold Card will need to spend at least $8,000 in eligible purchases in the first 6 months of account opening.
