Chase Sapphire Lost and Delayed Baggage Benefits

Whether you use the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, or the Chase Sapphire Reserve Business card, you have the same coverage for lost or delayed bags. Coverage applies when you use your card or Chase Ultimate Rewards points to pay for your airfare.

Lost luggage benefits apply when your luggage is determined lost by the carrier and you’re not expected to get it back. You can file a lost luggage claim to get reimbursement for lost items in your bags. This coverage typically applies to checked bags but can also be used for carry-on bags. You can get up to $3,000 back per person, per trip, but there’s a $500 sub-limit for jewelry and watches, and another $500 sub-limit for cameras and electronics.

Your baggage delay benefits apply when your bags arrive at your destination at least 6 hours late. At that point, you can purchase essentials until you’re reunited with your bag. These include toiletries, a change of clothes, and electronic device chargers. You can be reimbursed for up to $100 per day for up to 5 days.

There are limitations and exclusions, including items that aren’t covered, such as valuable documents, and specifically excluded health items, such as hearing aids. Baggage delay coverage doesn’t apply on your return trip. Presumably, you’ve made it home and can use alternative items.

Benefits apply to the cardholder, your spouse or domestic partner, and immediate family members.

Coverage is secondary to claims made with the common carrier. That means you can use your card’s benefits to get reimbursement for expenses beyond what the carrier provides as a refund, credit, or voucher.

How To File a Baggage Delay or Lost Luggage Claim

You can file a claim by visiting chasecardbenefits.com or by calling the benefits administrator at 800-350-1362 for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and Chase Sapphire Reserve card or 800-352-2173 for the Chase Sapphire Reserve Business card. Claims must be filed within 20 days of your baggage being lost or delayed.

If you file a claim online, you’ll sign in to your account with the benefits administrator. If you don’t have an account yet, select Verify Card & Register to set one up.

Once in the claim dashboard, you can click File a Claim to enter your details.

Next, you’ll select which card you want to use to make a claim. You’ll see a list of multiple cards if you’ve previously submitted claims on other Chase cards.

Filing a Baggage Delay Claim With Chase

When you file a baggage delay claim, you’ll select the date of purchase (when you purchased your travel ticket) and the incident date (when your baggage was delayed).

You must submit your claim within 20 days of the incident date, but the earlier, the better.

Next, you’ll indicate the type of loss — whether your baggage was delayed or misdirected. A baggage delay applies when your baggage doesn’t arrive on time, and baggage misdirection applies when your baggage is sent to the wrong place. If you’re not sure which to choose, baggage delay is the more general term and applies to most situations.

You’ll be presented with a list of documents required to submit your claim. These include:

  • Your travel itinerary that shows you paid for it with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card, Chase Sapphire Reserve card, or Chase Sapphire Reserve Business card
  • Confirmation of the baggage delay from the common carrier
  • Other claim settlement details (such as compensation received from the airline)
  • Itemized sales receipts for purchases
  • Your monthly billing statement that shows your name and address, the last 4 digits of your account number, and proof of payment for your fare with your card

Next, fill out your contact information. The benefits administrator will use this information to contact you about your claim.

Choose how you’d like to be paid if your claim is approved. You can select mail or ACH, but ACH will be faster. You don’t need to fill out your banking information at this point. You’ll get a request for banking information after your claim is approved.

Add details about the baggage delay, including whether it was delayed or misdirected, what happened, and the date of purchase and incident date. You’ll confirm that you used your Chase Sapphire Preferred card, Chase Sapphire Reserve card, or Chase Sapphire Reserve Business card to purchase the fare. Then, enter the amount you’re claiming, which should be for the delay expenses incurred.

Next, upload documents. First, you’ll upload your baggage delay confirmation, itemized sales receipts for essentials, and your monthly billing statement with the purchase amount.

Filing a Lost Luggage Claim With Chase

The process to file a lost luggage claim is almost identical to filing a delayed baggage claim. Once you’ve logged in to the claims dashboard and selected lost luggage as your claim type, establish the date you purchased the fare and the date your baggage was lost.

Then, you’ll choose a loss type, indicating whether it was damaged, lost, stolen, or another type of loss. If you’re not sure which type of loss applies, click on the loss type description link to see a pop-up explaining them.

Just as you would with a baggage delay claim, you’ll be required to upload documents for your lost luggage claim, including your travel itinerary, monthly billing statement with the purchase amount of your fare, common carrier claim details documenting the loss, your original sales receipt, itemized sales receipts for replacement items, and other claim settlement details such as a settlement payment.

Fill out your contact information, including your phone and email, and indicate whether you prefer to be contacted by phone or email. The benefits administrator will use this information to contact you about your claim.

After completing the basics, you’ll enter details about the loss, explaining the loss type and what happened. You’ll also confirm the transaction and incident dates and whether you used your card or the rewards program associated with your card. Then, you’ll enter the cost being claimed.

Then, you can upload required documents, including confirmation that you filed a claim with the common carrier for lost luggage, your itemized sales receipts for replacement items, and a monthly billing statement showing the fare purchase. If you don’t have these documents ready when you submit the claim, you can upload them later, but you must provide them for claims processing.

Additional documents include the original sales receipt for the items in your luggage that were lost, stolen, or damaged, details of settlement payments you’ve received from the common carrier, and your travel itinerary.

After you upload documents, you’ll see a confirmation page detailing your claim, including your contact information, preferred payment method, loss details, and how much you’re claiming. Look over the details and click on the Edit link if you need to make any corrections.

Claims Processing

After you’ve submitted your claim and documents for either a baggage delay or lost luggage claim with Chase’s benefits administrator, your claim will enter the review process. You should receive an email confirming that your claim has been received.

The benefits administrator will review your claim information and supporting documents. You may be contacted for additional information if anything is missing or unclear. If you’re contacted for more information, respond promptly to keep the claims process moving.

You should expect your claim to be processed within a month, though a complex claim may take longer. It could also take longer if you’re missing documents or the carrier hasn’t confirmed your baggage is lost yet. You can track your claim in the Chase Card Benefits dashboard, where you originally submitted it.

If your claim is approved, you’ll receive reimbursement as a check or ACH payment, depending on the method of payment preference you selected when submitting your claim.

You’ll receive a written explanation if your claim is denied, and you can appeal the decision by submitting additional documentation if needed. Some claims may receive partial reimbursement if expenses are not eligible, such as luxury items or expenses exceeding the claim limit.

There are limitations to coverage. Baggage delay coverage only applies on your way to your destination, not on the return leg. For example, if you’ve landed at your destination and you don’t have the clothes and toiletries you planned to have with you, you can purchase necessities and file a claim for reimbursement. But you can’t claim delayed baggage if you’re returning home and could presumably use other items there. It’s a different story with lost luggage coverage, which applies to the entire trip, including the return.

Can I make a baggage claim if the airline reimburses me?

You can make a claim with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card, Chase Sapphire Reserve card, or Chase Sapphire Reserve Business card, even if the airline has reimbursed you for some expenses. Chase’s benefits are secondary to airline reimbursements, so you can get reimbursed for expenses the airline doesn’t cover. Chase requires that you submit documentation showing the compensation you received.
