Update:

The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

Hear me out: Buying gift cards can be a smart option for earning extra points on purchases you’ll make anyway. And if you’ve got some Air Canada bookings in your future, you can get triple points when buying gift cards.

This offer is available through September 29, and you can earn up to 30,000 points with this offer. Let’s check out the details.

Air Canada Gift Card Promotion Details

This isn’t your average promotion for triple points on flights or a direct offer to buy points and miles. Instead, you’ll earn triple Aeroplan points when buying gift cards through September 29, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. ET.

This promotion provides a maximum of 30,000 bonus points, and there are some terms you’ll want to know about:

  • Triple points are only available when spending CA$1,000 (roughly $737.50) or more in a single purchase.
  • Earn 3x points per CA$1 spent (roughly 74 cents USD).
  • Maximum purchase per transaction is CA$2,000 (roughly $1,475).
  • You must enter your Aeroplan number at the time of purchase to earn bonus points.
  • Earn up to a maximum of 30,000 points during this promotion by spending CA$10,000 (roughly $7,375.40).
  • Bonus points will post to your Aeroplan account by October 31, 2024.
  • Complete your purchase by September 29, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. ET to qualify.

Air Canada gift cards can be used for flight reservations and vacation packages booked through Air Canada. You also can use them for seat fees, upgrades, checked bag fees, and cancellation fees. However, you can’t use gift cards for onboard purchases, group bookings, or as part of a payment for an Aeroplan award ticket redemption.

Is It Worth It?

If you maximize this promotion, you’ll earn a lot of Aeroplan points, but you’ll have to spend a lot to make it happen. We value Aeroplan points at 1.5 cents apiece. That means you’d earn $450 worth of Aeroplan points if you spend the maximum amount with this offer. That’s a 6.1% return on spending.

Your bonus Aeroplan points can then be redeemed on flights, upgrades, hotels, and more.

But do you need a bunch of Air Canada gift cards? And can you earn these points in a different way — a way without so many restrictions?

If you have a bunch of Air Canada flights coming up, you could earn 3x points per $1 spent with several travel credit cards, and you wouldn’t need to buy the gift cards to make it happen. You could simply book your trip directly, avoid some of the extra rules, and still earn points.

Hot Tip:

Final Thoughts

Through September 29, you can earn triple points on Air Canada gift card purchases. If you don’t have a credit card that earns 3x or better on flight bookings, this can be a smart way to earn those extra rewards while paying for trips with Air Canada — assuming you’re going to make those reservations anyway.

However, if you’ve got a credit card that earns 3x (or better) on flights when booking directly with an airline, you could simply book directly with Air Canada, earn extra points, and avoid some of the rules related to using gift cards.

In summary: This promotion is interesting if it makes sense for you. Make sure that’s the case before pulling out your wallet and making a hefty purchase.
