For several years now, Air Canada’s Aeroplan program has suspended its normal points expiration policy. However, that’s all changing come November 30, 2025.

At that point, the program’s normal expiration policy will resume. Here’s what you need to know and how to ensure you won’t lose out on valuable points.

Air Canada Aeroplan Resuming Points Expiration Policy

The Air Canada Aeroplan program announced that it will resume its typical points expiration policy at the end of this month. As of November 30, 2025, any points you may have been sitting on for the last several years will expire if you haven’t completed an eligible account transaction before this date.

The program’s points expiration policy states that points will expire if there has been no qualifying account activity for 18 months. Earning, redeeming, donating, transferring, or converting points all count as qualifying activity. Each time you complete one of these actions, the expiration clock is reset.

How To Ensure Your Points Don’t Expire

There are numerous ways to complete qualifying activity in your Aeroplan account to ensure you don’t lose your points to expiration. You simply need to conduct a transaction that earns or redeems 1 Aeroplan point.

Here are some simple ways to make sure you keep your Aeroplan account active:

  • Fly on an Air Canada flight and enter your Aeroplan number to earn points. Alternatively, you can fly with a partner airline and select Aeroplan as the account in which you want to earn rewards.
  • Book a hotel or car rental through Air Canada channels.
  • Shop through Air Canada’s shopping portal or at its retail partners.
  • Redeem Aeroplan points for flights, hotels, car rentals, gift cards, events, or inflight extras such as Wi-Fi.
  • Donate points to a charitable organization.
  • Transfer points to another Aeroplan member.
  • Transfer points from another program into your Aeroplan account.

If you think you have points in your Aeroplan account that may expire, one of the easiest things you can do without flying or making other travel reservations is to transfer points from one of Aeroplan’s transfer partners into your Aeroplan account.

Both American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer to Air Canada Aeroplan at a 1:1 ratio. And since Aeroplan is one of our favorite programs for booking award flights, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to park 1,000 points (the minimum amount required for a transfer) in your Aeroplan account to use later and keep other points from expiring in the process.

Final Thoughts

Air Canada Aeroplan will resume its normal points expiration policy on November 30. There’s been a pause on this policy for several years now, but it’s coming to an end. If you think your points are at risk, you can take action to ensure you don’t lose them by completing any one of several easy qualifying activities.
