If you’ve flown Air Canada from the U.S., you’ve probably flown through Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), its primary hub.

But in some big news this morning, Air Canada announced an expansion at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ), including new transborder routes to several U.S. cities.

Here’s what you need to know.

Air Canada Launching Transborder Flights From Billy Bishop Airport

Air Canada will begin flights from Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) to Boston (BOS), Chicago (ORD), New York (LGA), and Washington, D.C. (IAD) next year.

Here’s a look at the new routes and their frequencies:

The new routes also coincide with the opening of U.S. Customs Preclearance services at Billy Bishop, which will allow passengers to clear U.S. customs before departure.

Air Canada will operate the De Havilland Dash 8-400 on the routes, seating 78 passengers. Air Canada says it will be the only airline offering inflight Wi-Fi from Billy Bishop.

Air Canada said the new transborder service is its “most significant expansion” at Toronto Island since the airline first served the airport more than 3 decades ago.

“The new transborder routes will especially benefit our loyal customers and business travelers by creating frequent and easy connections between the heart of Canada’s financial capital and the major markets of New York, Boston, Washington, and Chicago,” said executive vice president Mark Galardo.

Bottom Line:

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is a small airport located in Downtown Toronto and is the hub for Porter Airlines. The airport serves about 1.7 million passengers annually (compared to nearly 47 million for Pearson).

How To Book

Flights are now available directly at AirCanada.com. We’re seeing flights for as little as $91 one-way on the YTZ-LGA route.

You can also redeem Air Canada Aeroplan points to book these flights. You can find economy flights starting at 13,500 points one-way.

Final Thoughts

This is exciting news, especially for travelers who prefer flying out of Toronto Island, as the airport is considerably closer to the city than Pearson. Flights are also reasonably priced with cash or Aeroplan points, making it easier than ever to fly to and from Canada.
