For travelers worried about being forced off an overbooked flight, a significant potential change at American Airlines could offer relief.

The Oneworld carrier has reportedly moving away from involuntarily removing passengers from flights and instead placing greater emphasis on finding volunteers willing to take a later flight in exchange for some compensation.

Here’s everything we know so far.

American Airlines To Take a New Approach

As first reported by View from the Wing, American Airlines has instructed its employees to stop involuntarily bumping passengers when flights are oversold.

Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier is also giving employees additional flexibility to accommodate volunteers, including allowing them to confirm a passenger on the next flight, even if that flight is already full. The airplane door must stay open until a volunteer has been found for every oversold seat.

This potential change represents a major shift from the traditional process airlines tend to follow when too many passengers show up for an oversold flight. Under that system, airlines first seek volunteers willing to give up their seats in exchange for compensation. If not enough passengers volunteer, airlines can then ultimately deny boarding to some travelers against their wishes.

American Airlines’ customer service policy acknowledges that the airline commonly overbooks flights and states that passengers who volunteer are normally offered compensation and a confirmed seat on a later flight. Additionally, American’s conditions of carriage states thats passengers can be involuntarily denied boarding if there are not enough volunteers.

What This Means for Travelers

This potentially new approach effectively prioritizes finding willing volunteers, which can be a great thing. For travelers, the biggest potential benefit is more attractive compensation offers. The U.S. Department of Transportation does not have a maximum amount that airlines can offer passengers who give up their seats. Passengers willing to hold out could potentially receive higher offers.

Additionally, this could provide greater certainty. Passengers willing to give up their seats have a stronger incentive to accept the airline’s offer if they know they can be confirmed on the next flight rather than being left waiting for an open seat.

On the other hand, this could conceivably cause more flight delays for an airline that, previous to this, had made on-time departures its No. 1 priority.

However, there are still many things passengers must consider before volunteering. Taking a later flight could mean missed connections, delays in reaching a destination, or additional hotel or meal expenses. Additionally, it is important to ask an airline whether or not they will provide accommodations for passengers who volunteer.

Final Thoughts

American Airlines is reportedly considering a major policy change regarding involuntary passenger bumping. The airline is looking to rely more heavily on voluntary agreements and potentially stronger incentives to persuade travelers.

For passengers, oversold flights will remain the norm. However, under the new approach, travelers may have more control over whether they accept it.
