American Airlines and one of its partners in the Oneworld alliance, Finnair, are cooperating more closely.

In a filing with the Department of Transportation, the airlines said they would extend their codeshare agreement to 13 destinations in Mexico, from American’s hub in Dallas-Ft. Worth (DFW).

Let’s see what changes with this new codeshare.

AA and Finnair To Codeshare on 13 Mexican Routes

This new codeshare agreement comes amid Finnair’s expansion into the United States, which plans to launch even more flights next year. The codeshare agreement means that Finnair’s AY flight code will be placed on flights operated by American Airlines from its DFW hub to the following 13 destinations, as reported by Simple Flying:

  • Cancun (CUN)
  • Cozumel (CZM)
  • Guanajuato (BJX)
  • Guadalajara (GDL)
  • Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo (ZIH)
  • Los Cabos (SJD)
  • Mérida (MID)
  • Mexico City (MEX)
  • Monterrey (MTY)
  • Oaxaca (OAX)
  • Puerto Vallarta (PVR)
  • Querétaro (QRO)
  • Tamaulipas (TAM)

Flights to those destinations on American Airlines and regional affiliate American Eagle will carry AY flight codes in addition to AA’s. That means passengers will be able to fly seamlessly on Finnair to Dallas-Ft. Worth and then onward on American — all on a single ticket.

Hot Tip:

Finnair Expands in the U.S.

Finnair is a relatively small member of the Oneworld alliance, but it has a large network. It employs a felt of Airbus A330s and A350s to fly from its base in Helsinki (HEL) to 6 U.S. airports: Chicago (ORD)Dallas-Ft. Worth, Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA), New York (JFK), and Seattle (SEA).

Note, too that every Finnair flight to the U.S. features its new and highly praised business class product.

Next year, Finnair will add more flights to Chicago, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Seattle, and Los Angeles. It will fly to Chicago daily next summer and to Dallas up to 11 times per week compared to 6 in the summer of this year. Los Angeles and Seattle will each get 2 additional weekly frequencies. Those are hubs for its Oneworld partners American and Alaska Airlines, respectively, meaning more opportunities for easy connections via Helsinki.

Final Thoughts

Finnish flag carrier Finnair, a member of the Oneworld alliance with American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, is expanding its codeshare agreement with American. The duo will add Finnair codes to flights from Dallas to 13 destinations in Mexico.

That comes as Finnair expands in the U.S. with more flights to several destinations from its Northern European hub in Helsinki, a convenient connection point to many destinations in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

All of these developments are positive for flyers, particularly those loyal to Oneworld carriers, looking for easier connections between North America and Europe.
