American Airlines has quietly added LEVEL, IAG’s long-haul low-cost carrier, as a partner airline for mileage earning — but with a major limitation.

Here’s what you need to know.

Only AA-Numbered Flights Qualify for AAdvantage Miles

LEVEL operates long-haul flights out of Barcelona (BCN) to throughout the Americas, including New York-JFKBoston (BOS)Los Angeles (LAX)Miami (MIA), and San Francisco (SFO).

While technically Iberia operates these flights, they’re marketed under the LEVEL brand. The airline is part of International Airlines Group (IAG) — the same parent company that owns British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, and Vueling.

With this new partnership, American Airlines AAdvantage members can now earn Loyalty Points and award miles when booking a LEVEL-operated flight with an American Airlines flight number (AA-coded). This means your ticket must show “AA” as the marketing carrier, even though the flight is operated by LEVEL aircraft and crew.

Mileage earning is based on the cost of your ticket (base fare plus carrier-imposed fees):

  • Base earning: 5 miles per $1 for AAdvantage members
  • Elite bonuses: Gold (40%), Platinum (60%), Platinum Pro (80%), Executive Platinum (120%)

If your ticket shows an Iberia flight number (IB2600–IB2699), it won’t earn any AAdvantage credit. Iberia-coded flights outside this range will earn miles based on Iberia’s chart instead, so carefully checking your ticket details before purchase is crucial.

While this may sound like a niche update, it’s significant for AAdvantage members who regularly fly between Spain and the Americas. LEVEL often competes aggressively on price, especially for one-way and last-minute tickets, so pairing a low fare with AAdvantage mileage earning could be an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers still looking to rack up Loyalty Points toward elite status.

Hot Tip:

It’s important to note that LEVEL is a long-haul low-cost carrier (LCC) with a no-frills service model. Even if you’re an AAdvantage elite member, you won’t see benefits like complimentary upgrades, Main Cabin Extra seating, or priority perks on these flights. This is purely an opportunity to earn miles and Loyalty Points — not a path to an elevated flight experience.

Final Thoughts

American Airlines’ new partnership with LEVEL expands earning options for travelers headed to and from Barcelona, but this is far from a premium experience. LEVEL is a low-cost carrier with limited amenities, and there are no added perks for AAdvantage elites onboard.

If your goal is comfort and elite recognition, it’s best to look for alternative partners. However, if you snag an AA-coded fare at the right price, this is a decent way to rack up miles and Loyalty Points while crossing the Atlantic.
