Although it may be freezing cold in much of the country, American Airlines is already looking to warmer times and has announced 15 new routes for summer 2026.

This tranche of new routes also includes the addition of an entirely new destination to the carrier’s route map and the further bolstering of its Chicago O’Hare hub, where it’s locked in a fierce battle with cross-town rival United Airlines.

Let’s take a look at all of the exciting details.

American’s New Summer 2026 Routes

American Airlines will start 15 new domestic routes from several hubs in time for the summer 2026 travel season. Additionally, it will begin service to an entirely new destination: Lincoln, Nebraska (LNK), from Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Dallas Fort Worth (DFW), and Phoenix (PHX). The city that’s home to the University of Nebraska will become American’s 240th domestic destination when service starts.

In addition to the 3 new routes, American is expanding existing service from its Chicago hub, where it competes with rival United Airlines for passengers at the suddenly booming airport.

The carrier will expand its current winter-seasonal routes between Chicago and Santa Fe, New Mexico (SAF), and Key West, Florida (EYW) into the summer, operating between May 21 and September 8, 2026.

It will also increase service to Hilton Head, South Carolina (HHH), and Pensacola, Florida (PNS) to daily, up from the current weekend-only service. These routes will remain seasonal, being offered between February 12 and September 8, 2026.

The airline says it will offer 30% more departures when compared to 2025, with more than 480 daily departures by spring break and over 500 departures per day during the summer.

Final Thoughts

American Airlines is adding several new routes in time for the summer 2026 travel season, with a particular focus on its Chicago operation as a way to strengthen its position at the airport, where it competes fiercely with United for market share in the nation’s third-largest city.

These new routes are also focused on connecting smaller cities with American’s larger network, which is good news for residents of these cities, who will soon have more options for accessing single-stop itineraries to loads of popular destinations worldwide.
