Airline earnings calls typically aren’t the most interesting, but occasionally, interesting nuggets come through. American Airlines announced some big news for its inflight and on-ground products, some of which will be introduced this year.

Here are some exciting developments we learned from American Airlines’ fourth-quarter earnings call.

Significant Updates for American Airlines in 2025

We previously reported on American Airlines’ plan to introduce its so-called Flagship Suite last spring. Now, we have a timeline.

On its earnings call on January 23, 2025, the airline announced that it would roll out the “state-of-the-art” product on its Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A321 XLR aircraft, which will arrive later this year. Additionally, American will reconfigure its existing Boeing 777-300 jets with Flagship Suites this year.

Bottom Line:

Current 787-9 aircraft offer 30 business class seats arranged in a 1-2-1 reverse herringbone configuration, using B/E Aerospace Super Diamond seats. The new seats will feature privacy doors, new interiors, additional amenities, and more.

That’s not all that came from the earnings call. American said it will open a Flagship Lounge at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) this summer. This is the airline’s fifth Flagship Lounge, though the first at PHL. The lounge will join three other American Airlines Admirals Clubs at the airport and will be located in Terminal A-West. The intention to open a Flagship Lounge indicates that American plans to invest more in its Philadelphia hub post-pandemic.

American CEO Robert Isom said on the call that Philadelphia was “getting back to where it should be” after the pandemic. In practice, this means restoring service levels last seen in 2019 and even exceeding them in certain areas. The airline expects a similar hub restoration to occur at Chicago-O’Hare (ORD) this year.

Finally, Wi-Fi is coming to more AA jets. The airline has begun deploying high-speed satellite Wi-Fi on its 2-class regional aircraft, which have historically not had Wi-Fi connectivity. That project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. American will also update its mobile app (iOS, Android) to give customers more self-service options.

American also said last year was monumental for the AAdvantage program and the airline’s co-branded credit cards. According to the airline, AAdvantage members were responsible for a whopping 75% of premium cabin revenue.

“2024 was a record year for AAdvantage,” Isom said. “Throughout the year, we had a record number of customers enroll in the program, with members earning and burning more miles than any year in our history.”

Final Thoughts

American Airlines will roll out some passenger-friendly upgrades this year. Long-haul aircraft will feature new premium cabins, the airline’s Philadelphia hub will have a brand-new Flagship Lounge, and its regional planes will have fast Wi-Fi connectivity. So far, 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year for American Airlines.
