Many people might overlook the American Express® Gold Card in favor of its flashier counterpart, the Platinum Card® from American Express. But the Amex Gold card earns far more points on everyday purchases.

The Amex Platinum card’s premium travel benefits (like airport lounge access and prepaid hotel credits) may woo frequent travelers, but the Amex Gold card actually earns points quickly and sustainably over time to justify its $325 annual fee (rates & fees).

Even setting aside the rewards potential, American Express advertises more than $500 in annual value through various benefits. On paper, these benefits alone should be more than enough to offset the $325 annual fee.

But advertised value and real-world value are rarely the same, so let’s break down the benefits to see whether they actually add up to the “more than $500” figure.

Amex Gold Card Overview

American Express states that cardmembers can extract more than $500 in annual value from 5 key benefits alone — and that’s before factoring in the rewards you can earn from spending.

Amex Gold Card Valuation
The 5 benefits we’re analyzing. Screenshot: American Express website

Speaking of rewards, the Amex Gold card earns:

  • 5x points on prepaid hotels booked through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel app
  • 4x points on restaurants worldwide (up to $50,000 spent per calendar year, then 1x points)
  • 4x points at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 spent per calendar year, then 1x points)
  • 3x points on flights booked on AmexTravel.com, the Amex Travel app, or directly with airlines
  • 2x points on prepaid car rentals and cruises booked and paid through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel app
  • 1x points on all other eligible purchases

That 4x earning rate is industry-leading across food-related purchases, though the recent addition of bonus points on travel gives even more opportunities to earn rewards over the long run. Now, we’ll go through the 5 key benefits one by one and assess their real value.

1. Dining Credit (Up to $120 in Face Value, About $60 in Reality)

Enrollment is required for many of the card’s benefits, but fortunately, it’s a one-time process. That includes the annual dining credit, which offers up to $120 in annual value.

Cardholders earn up to $10 in monthly statement credits when paying with the Amex Gold card at participating retailers, including Grubhub (and Seamless), Buffalo Wild Wings, Five Guys, The Cheesecake Factory, and Wonder. The value of the credit does not roll over month to month.

Thankfully, the merchant I use most consistently hasn’t left the list: Grubhub. The dining credit works for pickup orders, so you don’t have to pay a premium for delivery just to take advantage of this perk.

That makes the credit relatively easy for me to use, but I don’t think it’s fair to value it at the full $120 since it’s also easy to forget to use it each month. For that reason, I personally value the benefit at about half the face value, or up to $60 per year.

Bottom Line:

The list of eligible platforms has changed significantly over the past few years (for better or for worse), and it’s unfortunate that the credit isn’t provided all at once. Instead, it’s broken down into much smaller monthly increments, making it more cumbersome to maximize.

2. Uber Cash (Up to $120 in Face Value, About $60 in Reality)

By adding your Amex Gold card to your Uber account, you automatically receive $10 in Uber Cash on the first of each month. In total, that provides up to $120 in annual value.

Uber Cash doesn’t roll over to the next month, so it’s a benefit you’ll want to remember to use. Fortunately, it’s much easier to use than the dining credit, since Uber Cash can be redeemed for eligible Uber rides and Uber Eats orders in the U.S., as long as you pay with an Amex card.

Because Uber is so widely available and widely used, I have no trouble using this benefit each month. Whether it’s taking 1 Uber ride per month or placing an Uber Eats order, the monthly Uber Cash gets used with almost no effort.

However, the benefit is limited to the U.S. and doesn’t roll over month to month, which makes it less flexible than its full face value suggests. With those limitations, it’s fairer to assess the Uber Cash benefit at half of its advertised value, or about $60 per year.

3. Resy Credit (Up to $100 in Face Value, About $100 in Reality)

The next 2 credits were new additions to the Amex Gold card following its 2024 refresh. Resy, the restaurant reservation platform owned by American Express, allows you to book tables at thousands of restaurants.

The Resy credit provides up to $100 in statement credits each calendar year at U.S. Resy restaurants when you pay with the Amex Gold card (enrollment required). It’s broken down into 2 separate credits for the first and second half of the year, with up to $50 from January through June and up to $50 from July through December.

You don’t need to make a reservation on Resy for your purchase to count, though booking your table in advance can help avoid any long wait times. As long as the restaurant is affiliated with Resy, which you can check in the Resy app, you can get back up to $50 in statement credits twice a year when paying with your Amex Gold card.

This benefit is relatively seamless to use, and the semiannual structure gives you plenty of time to use the full value before each portion expires. With fewer hoops to jump through and a longer window to use it, the Resy credit deserves its full face value of $100 per year.

4. Dunkin’ Credit (Up to $84 in Face Value, $0 in Reality)

The Dunkin’ credit rewards cardmembers who like the occasional coffee run, with up to $84 in annual value (enrollment required). Unfortunately, that breaks down to a rather tedious, up to $ 7 in monthly credit that doesn’t roll over. It makes the benefit feel like a coupon to keep track of rather than a source of meaningful savings.

I’m not a huge Dunkin’ fan, and with the closest location to me about 20 miles away, this benefit goes unused every month. Of course, its value could look very different for someone who regularly visits Dunkin’, or perhaps for quick airport pit stops for coffee or snacks.

Personally, I value this benefit at $0. That may sound harsh, but the actual annual value depends on your lifestyle habits.

5. The Hotel Collection Access (Up to $100 in Face Value, $0 in Reality)

The final benefit isn’t a credit, but access to The Hotel Collection, which comprises more than 1,400 upscale properties worldwide bookable on AmexTravel.com. Amex Gold cardholders who book The Hotel Collection properties can not only earn 5x points on prepaid reservations, but also receive a couple of benefits. However, a 2-night minimum is required.

These perks include a $100 property credit toward eligible charges (as determined by the property) and a complimentary room upgrade when available.

American Express suggests that cardholders can get $100 in value just by booking 1 hotel stay per year, thanks to the property credit that can usually be used for on-site dining or room service charges. While it’s a great perk in theory, I don’t think it’s fair to say that there’s $100 in guaranteed value here, especially when The Hotel Collection properties are pricey to begin with.

That’s why I value this benefit at $0, but the math can change quickly if you already book these types of hotel stays.

Is the Amex Gold Card Worth It in 2026?

American Express advertises more than $500 in annual value from these 5 benefits, but my personal valuations cut that number by more than half. Realistically, I believe that these benefits are worth around $220, and they are great benefits that I use.

Even though these 5 benefits don’t completely offset the $325 annual fee for me, the rewards potential definitely does. If my partner and I spend $10,000 per year on restaurants and $10,000 at U.S. supermarkets, we can earn around 80,000 points annually with the Amex Gold card.

We currently value Membership Rewards points at 2.2 cents each for travel, largely thanks to their ability to transfer to more than 20 airline and hotel loyalty programs. At that valuation, 80,000 points annually are worth about $1,760 in travel.

Plus, eligible new applicants can score a welcome offer as high as 100,000 bonus points, which can be another great reason to apply if you don’t have the card already. Here are the full details on the current public welcome offer:

Final Thoughts

The Amex Gold card may not deliver more than $500 in real value from its core benefits alone, but that figure doesn’t consider where the card really excels: earning points. Even after finding that I value the benefits well below the advertised amount, the Amex Gold card is one to keep for the points alone.
