There are several variations of a new targeted Amex Offer that awards bonus American Express Membership Rewards points on eligible Amazon purchases.

That may sound like an easy way to earn extra points, but there’s a catch: You have to redeem Amex points to trigger the bonus, and the numbers aren’t really that attractive.

Here are the details.

Amazon Amex Offer Details

American Express is targeting cardmembers with several versions of a new Amazon Amex Offer. The exact requirements and bonus amounts vary, so not everyone will see the same deal.

A few Upgraded Points team members found similar offers in their accounts. One version awards 1,250 bonus Membership Rewards points after using at least 3,571 points toward an eligible purchase at Amazon.com. This version can be used up to 3 times for a total of 3,750 bonus points.

Other cardmembers may see offers with different redemption requirements or higher bonus amounts. Since these promotions are targeted, you may not see an offer at all.

Is It Worth It?

At Upgraded Points, we value American Express Membership Rewards points at 2.2 cents apiece. Based on that valuation, the 3,571 points required for the version described above are worth approximately $78. In return, you would earn 1,250 bonus points, which we value at roughly $27.50. That means you would redeem about $78 worth of points to earn back less than $28 in points.

The exact math will vary depending on which targeted offer you receive. However, the versions we’ve seen require cardmembers to redeem considerably more value in points than they would earn from the bonus.

Membership Rewards points also offer relatively poor value when used on Amazon purchases. We prefer to save them for travel, where transferring points to select airline and hotel partners can provide much better value. Those points could help cover the cost of an award flight or hotel stay, rather than reducing the cost of an Amazon purchase.

Hot Tip:

Based on the offers we’ve seen, none are worth using. You’re better off saving your points for higher-value redemptions, such as flights. Still, you can check your account to see if you received a version that awards more bonus points than you need to redeem.

Final Thoughts

Bonus points are always tempting, but these Amazon Amex Offers just don’t seem to make much sense. Unless you find a much better version in your account, save your Membership Rewards points for a flight or another redemption that offers more value.
