I’ve had either the Platinum Card® from American Express or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express in my wallet for more than a decade. Those cards are still a major part of my overall strategy, especially for the premium travel perks they provide.

Lately, I’ve found myself prioritizing earning Membership Rewards points over travel benefits like lounge access and elite status. As much as friends and family like to joke that I’m always on a plane, I’m a dad of 3, and we spend far more each month on household expenses than on airfare.

That’s what led me to apply for the American Express® Gold Card and add it to my wallet as an everyday card.

American Express Membership Rewards

Although the card has a $325 annual fee (rates & fees), the ability to earn Membership Rewards points on everyday spending categories makes it a great household card.

Hot Tip: Apply and find out if you’re eligible for a welcome bonus offer as high as 100,000 points with the Amex Gold card. Welcome offers may vary, and you may not be eligible for an offer.

The Amex Gold Card Fits My Life Right Now

When I first got the Amex Platinum card more than a decade ago, my spending looked very different. I was constantly traveling and got the most value from premium travel benefits.

While I still travel frequently, my day-to-day spending has changed. Between groceries, restaurants, takeout, almost-daily coffee runs, and the never-ending reality of feeding 3 daughters, my family spends roughly $2,000 per month on dining and groceries. That’s about $24,000 in annual spending.

At 4 points per $1 on dining and our grocery bill, that works out to nearly 96,000 Membership Rewards points every year from those purchases alone (the 4 points per $1 rate is limited to up to $50,000 spent on dining worldwide per year and up to $25,000 spent at U.S. grocery stores per year). That’s before I factor in flights booked directly with airlines, Amex Offers, referral bonuses, or any other opportunities to earn additional points.

Hot Tip:

While it may seem a little excessive to pay for both cards’ annual fees, Upgraded Points values Membership Rewards points at 2.2 cents apiece. Therefore, taking home 96,000 in points just from my Amex Gold card alone translates into more than $2,100 in rewards. That points figure exceeds the annual fees I pay, and all before considering the benefits from each card.

The Amex Gold Card Is Now My Default Card

An unexpected benefit of making the Amex Gold card my default is how much simpler my wallet has become.

As the self-appointed household chef — who’s constantly thinking about food — I’m always planning dinner, stopping at the grocery store for ingredients, grabbing coffee, ordering takeout after a busy day, or deciding where we’ll eat on the weekend. If it’s a food-related purchase, I’m reaching for my Amex Gold card.

If I’m buying groceries or eating or ordering from a restaurant, I pay with my Amex Gold card. If I’m booking airfare, I reach for my Amex Platinum card since I earn 5 points per $1 spent on flights purchased directly with the airline or through AmexTravel.com (up to $500,000 per year) compared to 3x with the Amex Gold card.

The Amex Gold card’s statement credits also feel more natural for the way my family already spends (enrollment is required for some benefits). We already order takeout through Uber Eats and dine at restaurants, so it’s much easier for me to get value from credits tied to those purchases than from benefits that require me to go out of my way or remember to use them before they expire.

The purchases I make most often aren’t flights or hotels but the everyday expenses that keep my household running. That’s why, out of the 25-plus credit cards in my wallet, the Amex Gold card has become the one I reach for more than any other.

Hot Tip:

Choose a travel rewards card that closely aligns with your everyday purchases. Start by reviewing your actual spending over the last 6 to 12 months. The best card for your wallet is often the one that rewards the purchases you already make the most, not necessarily the one with the flashiest perks.

My Amex Platinum Card Isn’t Going Anywhere

Adding the Amex Gold card to my wallet didn’t mean replacing the Amex Platinum card. These cards do very different jobs, and I still get tremendous value from the Amex Platinum card every time I travel, despite its $895 annual fee (rates & fees).

Amex Centurion Lounge SLC Outdoor Terrace
I think of my Amex Platinum card as my perks-rich travel card, while my Amex Gold card handles my everyday purchases. Image Credit: Stella Shon

When I’m booking airfare, checking into a Fine Hotels + Resorts property, or taking advantage of Centurion Lounge access, hotel elite status, travel protections, or statement credits, the Amex Platinum card is still exactly the card I want in my wallet (enrollment required for some benefits).

Today, the Amex Platinum card is my travel card, while the Amex Gold card handles the spending that happens the other 90% of the time. Each card has a clear role, and I don’t feel like they’re competing with each other.

American Express Membership Rewards

For years, I prioritized premium travel perks because that’s where I found the most value. But as my life changed, so did what I wanted from my credit cards. I’d rather earn more Membership Rewards points that help pay for future trips with my family than have another luxury travel benefit I only use occasionally. That’s why I applied for the Amex Gold card, and it’s quickly become my go-to for everyday purchases.

The Amex Platinum card still makes my trips a bit more comfortable, but the Amex Gold card helps earn the Membership Rewards points that make many of those trips possible.

Hot Tip: Apply and find out if you’re eligible for a welcome bonus offer of as high as 175,000 points with the Amex Platinum. Welcome offers may vary, and you may not be eligible for an offer.

Final Thoughts

The Amex Platinum card isn’t leaving my wallet. It’s still the card I rely on for airfare, airport lounges, hotel perks, and premium travel benefits. But these days, my priority is earning more Membership Rewards points for future trips with my family. Because so much of my everyday spending goes toward dining and groceries, the Amex Gold card has naturally become the one I reach for most.
