I love visiting a great airport lounge when I have time, but when my flight schedule requires an overnight connection, I would rather leave the airport and experience a new city — even if I only have a few hours.

That is why the up to $600 annual hotel credit on the Platinum Card® from American Express is now the benefit I value most. I’ve used it to turn necessary overnight connections into stays at 5-star hotels, often for around $100 or less out of pocket. It’s better than waiting inside the airport for my connection or staying at a typical airport hotel.

My upcoming night at the Mandarin Oriental, Taipei, is a perfect example. The hotel credit is not just a cool perk for me — it’s the benefit that best justifies paying the Amex Platinum card’s $895 annual fee (rates & fees) and makes long layovers an opportunity for luxury rather than discomfort.

Here’s how I put the up to $600 hotel prepaid credit to work and why the value I receive makes the Amex Platinum card worth keeping year after year.

To use the credit, you must make a prepaid reservation through AmexTravel.com at a participating property in Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection (minimum 2-night stay) and pay with your Amex Platinum card. The prepaid requirement is important. A reservation that you pay for at the hotel does not qualify, even if the property participates in one of the programs.

Fine Hotels + Resorts is a better fit for my overnight-stopover strategy because it does not require a minimum stay. I can book just 1 night and still receive the hotel credit and the program’s valuable on-property benefits:

  • Daily breakfast for 2
  • Guaranteed 4 p.m. checkout
  • Noon check-in, when available
  • A room upgrade upon arrival, when available
  • A property-specific experience credit, typically worth $100
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi

The Hotel Collection works a little differently. Reservations require a minimum stay of 2 consecutive nights for you to receive program benefits, which include a room upgrade and a $100 property credit toward eligible charges, when available. Because I typically use my hotel credit for a 1-night stay when I’m connecting, I focus primarily on Fine Hotels + Resorts properties.

Eligible prepaid hotel reservations made through AmexTravel.com also earn 5 points per $1 with the Amex Platinum card. However, the combination of the statement credit and Fine Hotels + Resorts perks is where I find the greatest value.

In fact, this is the benefit that goes the furthest toward offsetting the Amex Platinum card’s annual fee for me. I use it to turn overnight connections into affordable stays at 5-star hotels.

How I Turn the Amex Platinum’s Hotel Credit Into Luxury Stopovers

Long international trips can be exhausting, even when I am lucky enough to fly in business or first class. If my itinerary requires an overnight connection, I generally have 2 options: I can book a moderately priced hotel near the airport or turn the layover into a quick city visit and a one-night luxury splurge.

Whenever the schedule permits, I choose the latter and use my Amex Platinum card’s up to $600 in prepaid hotel credit, which makes lodging much more affordable.

I get the most value from this strategy in cities where luxury hotels are relatively affordable. Generally, I look for a Fine Hotels + Resorts property between $300 and $500 per night. After applying the semiannual $300 credit, I can stay at a 5-star hotel for around $200 or less out of pocket.

The Fine Hotels + Resorts perks make it an even better deal, but I’m realistic about the value. Noon check-in and a room upgrade are subject to availability, so I treat those as extras rather than guaranteed savings. Instead, I focus on the benefits I know I’m getting, which include breakfast, property credit, and 4 p.m. checkout.

Most importantly, I’m not planning an unnecessary hotel stay just to use a credit. I look for opportunities within trips I am already taking, especially when my flight schedule requires an overnight connection. If that connection also gives me several hours to experience a destination for the first time, even better.

My $100 Night at the Mandarin Oriental, Taipei

My upcoming stay at the Mandarin Oriental, Taipei, is a perfect example of how I use this strategy. The main purpose of my trip is to fly Japan Airlines first class to Tokyo (NRT). On the way home, I have a 1-night stopover in Taipei (TPE) before flying back to the U.S. on EVA Air business class.

Since this will be my first visit to Taiwan, I decided to make the required overnight connection more interesting. I’ll have enough time to visit a night market, try local food, and get a feel for Taipei before deciding whether to return for a longer trip.

I found the 5-star Mandarin Oriental, Taipei, through Fine Hotels + Resorts for about $400, including taxes and fees.

Mandarin Oriental Taipei cash cost Amex FHR
My night at the Mandarin Oriental, Taipei cost $400.36, but I’ll pay just over $100 after the $300 hotel credit posts. Screenshot: American Express website

After receiving the $300 semiannual prepaid hotel statement credit for July to December, my effective out-of-pocket cost was around $100. Because I booked the property through AmexTravel.com, my stay also includes complimentary breakfast for 2 guests, a $100 property credit, guaranteed 4 p.m. checkout, noon check-in, and a room upgrade (if available).

With the additional Fine Hotels + Resorts perks, I’ll receive more value than I paid out of pocket. Screenshot: American Express website

I booked a deluxe king room and will be traveling solo, so I will be perfectly happy even if an upgrade is not available. The benefits I can count on — breakfast and the property credit — are worth at least $150 to me. That’s more than the effective cost for the room before I consider the value of staying at a 5-star hotel.

This strategy has already worked for me several times. Earlier this year, I used my other $300 semiannual prepaid hotel statement credit, from January to June, for an overnight layover in Doha (DOH). A 1-night Fine Hotels + Resorts stay at the Four Seasons Hotel Doha costs about $350, leaving me with an effective out-of-pocket cost of just $50. I could have easily paid more for a meal if I’d just spent the long layover inside the airport.

Once I added the value of the breakfast and property credit, I came out ahead while enjoying a luxury Four Seasons instead of settling for a basic airport hotel. I followed the same strategy I will in Taipei, turning a required overnight stay into an affordable 1-night luxury getaway.

How the Amex FHR Hotel Credit Helps Justify the Annual Fee

I consider the up-to-$600 prepaid hotel credit to be close to face value because I have several opportunities each year to use it at luxury hotels I would genuinely book. Even valuing it conservatively at $500, it effectively reduces the card’s $895 annual fee to under $400 for me.

That remaining cost is much easier to justify when I factor in the Amex Platinum card’s other benefits. It comes with elite status at hotels and car rental companies, extensive airport lounge access, and thousands of dollars in annual statement credits.

The card also earns 5 points per $1 on flights purchased directly from airlines or through AmexTravel.com (on up to $500,000 in purchases each calendar year). Although I usually redeem points and miles for award travel, the Amex Platinum card is my go-to card whenever I pay cash for airfare.

The hotel credit does most of the heavy lifting toward offsetting the annual fee. Once I factor in the card’s extensive list of perks and credits, I consistently receive more value than the annual fee costs.

Final Thoughts

The Amex Platinum card offers dozens of benefits, but the up-to-$600 annual hotel credit is the one that gives me the most consistent value. I look for reasonably priced Fine Hotels + Resorts properties where I can use each $300 semiannual credit to offset most of the cost of a single night.

That strategy brought the cost of my Four Seasons Hotel Doha stay down to $50, and it will soon let me stay at the Mandarin Oriental, Taipei, for around $100 out of pocket. The Amex Platinum card is not cheap, but with the way I travel, the hotel credit alone goes a long way toward making the annual fee worth paying year after year.
