Key Takeaways

  • EVA Air’s business class offers a top-tier experience with lie-flat seats and amenities like pajamas and high-end Champagne.
  • Booking EVA Air Business Class using points is best done through Aeroplan, ANA, and LifeMiles, which offer competitive redemption rates.
  • You can transfer points from programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards to these airline partners at a 1:1 ratio.

Taiwan’s EVA Air is one of the most underrated airlines in the world. Although the airline is often overlooked by flyers in favor of other, luxurious Asian carriers like Japan Airlines, Singapore Airlines, and Cathay Pacific, EVA Air has plenty to offer.

The airline offers some of the best service and dining in the sky and also has its own unique business class product known as Royal Laurel Class. While EVA Air doesn’t have a massive fleet of aircraft, it does operate several routes between Taiwan and the U.S. The airline is also well-connected throughout eastern Asia.

Let’s look at the EVA Air business class experience, the best programs to book it, and tips on earning the necessary points and miles.

A Look Inside EVA Air Business Class

For most of its long-haul routes, EVA Air operates a mix of Boeing 777-300ER and Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. Some of these aircraft feature EVA’s new Royal Laurel Class.

The seats are configured in a reverse-herringbone layout that maximizes space and privacy. The cabins are in a 1-2-1 configuration, which means every seat in the cabin has direct aisle access.

Each seat has fixed panels that provide plenty of privacy. Of course, each seat can recline into a fully flat bed at the press of a button. You can ensure you will rest comfortably on flights that can be up to 16 hours long.

EVA does not offer first class, but its elevated elements in business class make it feel like you’re in a first class seat. You won’t find the glitz and glamour of wood paneling and gold like you would on an airline like Emirates, but that doesn’t take away from the fantastic experience you’re bound to have.

EVA is also globally recognized for two of the most important perks when it comes to flying in a premium cabin: attentive service and top-notch dining. EVA has some of the industry’s most attentive and respectful flight attendants, and they provide excellent service. The food selection is also quite extensive and features plenty of Asian food.

In addition to the food and service, EVA Air also offers amenities such as pajamas and high-end Champagne throughout the flight. The airline also offers generally consistent and reliable Wi-Fi at a reasonable price, so you can stay connected to work, family, or friends during your flight.

If you’re departing from Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) in Taipei, make sure you stop by EVA Air’s business class lounge. Although it can be crowded at times, it is an excellent lounge overall, with plenty of dining options.

How To Book EVA Air Business Class

Now that you have an idea of what to expect during your business class adventure with EVA Air, let’s take a look at how to book an EVA Air business class award.

EVA Air is a Star Alliance member, which gives you plenty of partner airlines to book award tickets with.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) Mileage Club

Often overlooked, All Nippon Airways (ANA) Mileage Club is a great way to book Star Alliance partner award tickets. For partner awards, ANA has a zone-based award chart, where the miles you need for an award redemption depend on the departure and destination zones and class of service.

ANA divides the world into 8 distinct zones. North America is in Zone 6, and Taiwan is in Zone 3 (Asia 1). You can find the full award chart and zone definitions on ANA’s website.

Here is ANA’s round-trip award pricing for partner flights between the U.S. and Taiwan:

SCROLL FOR MORE

Class of Service

Required Mileage

Y (Economy)

60,000

C (Business)

95,000

F (First)

180,000

According to ANA’s partner award chart, business class flights between North America and Taiwan cost just 95,000 miles round-trip! This is an incredible deal in the world of points and miles.

However, it is worth noting that ANA Mileage Club does not allow one-way award bookings, which can be restrictive. Open-jaw bookings are allowed.

Although Mileage Club will pass on carrier-imposed surcharges when you book awards, EVA Air does not impose these fees. This means the high fuel surcharges with ANA redemptions are significantly lower on these awards.

Follow these steps to book partner awards using ANA miles:

  1. Use United’s website to search for award space.
  2. Visit ANA’s website.
  3. Choose ANA Mileage Club.
  4. Choose International then Award Reservation.
  5. Log in to your account.
  6. Enter your desired route and dates.
  7. Choose your desired class of travel.
  8. Choose your flights.
  9. Reserve your flight and pay for any applicable taxes and fees.

Here are some great redemptions to consider:

  • Chicago (ORD) to Taipei (TPE) round-trip in EVA Air business class for 95,000 ANA miles plus about $30 in taxes and fees
  • Houston (IAH) to Taipei (TPE) to Bangkok (BKK) round-trip in EVA Air business class with a stopover in Taipei for 95,000 ANA miles plus about $30 in taxes and fees

Hot Tip: For travel inspiration, check out our guide on the best ways to redeem ANA Mileage Club miles.

Earning ANA Mileage Club Miles

ANA Mileage Club is a transfer partner with American Express Membership Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy.

Amex Membership Rewards transfer to ANA at a 1:1 ratio. Marriott Bonvoy points transfer to ANA at a 3:1 ratio. For every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points that you transfer, you receive an extra 5,000-mile bonus.

Air Canada Aeroplan

Air Canada’s loyalty points program, Aeroplan, is another great option for booking Star Alliance partner awards.

The program is a favorite here at Upgraded Points thanks to its long list of partners, ease of earning miles, ability to book stopovers, and a published award chart for partner awards.

Aeroplan uses a zone-based award chart for redemptions but also factors in the total distance flown.

Aeroplan divides the globe into four distinct regions: North America, the Atlantic, the Pacific, and South America. All of North America is obviously in the North America zone, and all of eastern Asia is in the Pacific zone.

Here are the travel zones for Aeroplan awards:

Aeroplan region map for awards
Aeroplan divides the world into 4 regions. Award pricing also varies based on the distance flown. Image Credit: Aeroplan

In addition to the travel zones, you also need to factor in distance bands. This means that the farther you fly in a given zone, the more Aeroplan points you need, assuming you are in the next distance band.

Here is the Aeroplan award chart for flights between the North America and Pacific zones:

Aeroplan NA Pacifiz zone award chart
Award chart for flights between North America and Pacific zones. Image Credit: Aeroplan

The physical distance between airports is important for Aeroplan redemptions, as that tells you what your partner award will be priced at.

For example, the distance between Los Angeles (LAX) and Taipei is 6,799 miles, placing it in the 5,001-7,500 mile distance band. Partner business class awards can be booked for 75,000 Aeroplan points one-way.

However, the distance between New York (JFK) and Taipei is 7,808 miles, which pushes this routing into the 7,501-11,000 mile distance band. This partner award prices at a higher 87,500 Aeroplan points one-way in business class.

However, all nonstop flights from the U.S. to Taipei will cost either 75,000 or 87,500 Aeroplan points in business class.

Here are some great example routes you can book:

  • New York (JFK) to Taipei (TPE) one-way in EVA Air business class for 87,500 Aeroplan points plus about $40 in taxes and fees
  • Seattle (SEA) to Taipei (TPE) to Manila (MNL) one-way in EVA Air business class with a stopover in Taipei for 80,000 Aeroplan points plus about $40 in taxes and fees

Aeroplan also allows Aeroplan members to book stopovers when redeeming Aeroplan points. Stopovers can be booked on one-way awards and are priced at 5,000 Aeroplan points. You still want to be careful to not fall into a higher distance band just to have a stopover, as that will add to the price of your total redemption.

Here are the steps you need to follow to book online with Aeroplan:

  1. Make your way to Air Canada’s homepage.
  2. In the top right corner, click Sign in by hovering over the button that says Sign in.
  3. Log in using your Aeroplan number and password.
  4. On the homepage’s search box, remember to toggle the slider that says Points.
  5. Select Round-trip or One-way for the trip, fill in the search box, and click Find.
  6. Find a suitable flight, redeem your Aeroplan points, and use a credit card to book your Air Canada flight.

Aeroplan might show you several options with other Star Alliance partners, so if you want to fly EVA Air on the long-haul segment across the Pacific Ocean, make sure you check which airline is operating that segment.

Hot Tip:

Use a tool like Great Circle Mapper to calculate the distance between two different airports.

Earning Air Canada Aeroplan Points

Air Canada Aeroplan points are incredibly easy to earn because of their many transfer partners. Aeroplan is a transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One Miles, and Marriott Bonvoy.

All programs aside from Marriott Bonvoy transfer at a 1:1 rate to Aeroplan. Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 ratio to Aeroplan, and for every 60,000 Bonvoy points you transfer, you get a 5,000-mile bonus.

Avianca LifeMiles

Avianca LifeMiles is another fantastic frequent flyer program that offers great redemption rates for Star Alliance partner awards. Best of all, Avianca does impose fuel surcharges.

LifeMiles follows a standard zone-based award chart for most flights. However, the program has some pricing quirks and even mixed-cabin pricing.

In late 2022, Avianca suddenly increased award rates by as much as 30% on redemptions between the U.S. and Asia.

Now, LifeMiles charges between 85,000 and 90,000 LifeMiles for a one-way business class ticket between the U.S. and Asia on Star Alliance partner airlines, including EVA Air.

Here is an example of an EVA Air award booking using Avianca LifeMiles. A nonstop flight between Los Angeles and Taipei can be booked for 85,000 LifeMiles plus taxes and fees.

Here are some other options you can book using LifeMiles:

  • San Francisco (SFO) to Taipei (TPE) one-way in EVA Air business class for 85,000 LifeMiles plus about $30 in taxes and fees
  • New York (JFK) to Taipei (TPE) one-way in EVA Air business class for 90,000 LifeMiles plus about $60 in taxes and fees

Award availability tends to be rather inconsistent when it comes to LifeMiles awards. We suggest using other Star Alliance programs to search for award space, including United MileagePlus and Air Canada Aeroplan.

To book your EVA Air award with Avianca LifeMiles, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the LifeMiles homepage.
  2. Change the site language from Spanish to English by clicking the flag icon in the top right corner and clicking English.
  3. Click Log in in the top right corner and enter your LifeMiles information.
  4. On the English homepage, click Travel in the top left area of the main banner.
  5. Change the dropdown menu that says Smart Search to Star Alliance.
  6. Enter your flight details and click the Find Flights button.
  7. Select your travel dates.
  8. After a valid flight shows up, redeem your LifeMiles and use a credit card to pay for taxes and fees.

Earning Avianca LifeMiles

The Avianca LifeMiles program is a transfer partner of most major bank programs. LifeMiles is a transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards, Brex Rewards, Capital One Miles, Citi ThankYou Rewards, and Marriott Bonvoy.

All of the above transfer instantly at a 1:1 ratio except for Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 ratio.

Why We Like This Card

The Citi Double Cash® Card has long been one of the top cash-back credit cards on the market, and the card now has the ability to earn Citi ThankYou Points!

This means that cardholders of the Double Cash card will now earn 2% on every purchase with unlimited 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchases. Cash back is earned in the form of ThankYou Points. This means each billing cycle, you will earn 1 ThankYou point per $1 spent on purchases and an additional ThankYou point for every $1 paid on your purchase balance as long as there is a corresponding balance in your Purchase Tracker.

Citi has turned the Double Cash card into a top choice for those who are looking for an everyday, no-fuss credit card.

Hot Tip:

Look out for frequent transfer bonuses to LifeMiles from programs like American Express and Capital One.

United Airlines MileagePlus

Another potential option for booking Star Alliance awards is with United Airlines MileagePlus. However, the MileagePlus program has gone through a string of devaluations, including a major one earlier this year, when award prices were raised up to 35% on some routes.

Earlier this year, you could book United saver awards for 88,000 miles one-way between the U.S. and Asia. Now, MileagePlus charges 110,000 miles for the same flights, which represents a 25% increase. As a reference, this one-way redemption costs more than what ANA charges round-trip between the U.S. and Asia.

MileagePlus devaluation
You can book MileagePlus awards for Star Alliance partners. Image Credit: United

Additionally, United does not follow fixed redemption charts, even with flights on partner airlines. Even partner airline redemptions are subject to dynamic pricing. However, one great thing is that United does not levy fuel surcharges.

It is worth noting that the other programs mentioned offer a significantly better value. However, we included this option for those with a lot of United miles, and it should be used as a last resort.

Here are the necessary steps for booking United MileagePlus awards:

  1. Visit United’s website.
  2. Sign in to your account.
  3. Select Book with miles.
  4. Select your travel dates and route and your cabin of choice (in this case, business).
  5. Click Search.
  6. Select your flight (and make sure it’s operated by EVA Air).
  7. Review your flight choice.

Earning United MileagePlus Miles

United MileagePlus is a transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy. Chase Ultimate rewards transfer at a 1:1 ratio.

You can transfer Marriott Bonvoy points to United at a 3:1 ratio. For every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points you transfer, you receive a 10,000-mile bonus, which means you get 30,000 United miles if you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points.

There are also a handful of co-branded credit cards that enable you to earn United miles directly.

Other Options for Booking Flights on EVA Air

The programs we discussed are only a few of the many ways to book business class flights on EVA Air. As a Star Alliance member, you can use any of the loyalty programs from any of the alliance partners to book awards.

Other good options for booking include Asiana Club, Lufthansa’s Miles & More, and EVA Air’s own Infinity MileageLands program. Booking through Infinity MileageLands is a bit more complicated, but it can be useful if you have a lot of miles in your account.

However, for one reason or another, the programs above do not provide the same value when it comes to Star Alliance awards.

How To Earn Miles To Fly EVA Air Business Class

We recommend using miles from ANA, Aeroplan, LifeMiles, and, as a last resort, United to book flights on EVA Air primarily because they’re all relatively easy to earn.

In general, ANA offers the most attractive redemption rates, but it’s also the only program we’ve covered that requires round-trip bookings.

That said, other programs have higher redemption rates but offer more flexibility. All in all, we recommend referencing this transfer partner summary to help you decide:

  • Amex Membership Rewards points transfer to ANA, Aeroplan, and LifeMiles at a 1:1 ratio. Transfers to ANA take around 2 to 3 business days, while Aeroplan and LifeMiles transfers are nearly instant.
  • Bilt Rewards points transfer to Aeroplan instantly at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Brex Rewards points transfer to LifeMiles at a 1:1 ratio in up to 1 business day.
  • Capital One Miles transfer to Aeroplan and LifeMiles instantly at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer to Aeroplan and United instantly at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Citi ThankYou Points transfer to LifeMiles instantly at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Marriott Bonvoy points transfer to ANA, Aeroplan, and LifeMiles at a 3:1 ratio within 3 business days, 5 business days, and 1 business day, respectively. They also transfer to United MileagePlus at a 3:1 with a bonus of 10,000 miles for every 60,000 points transferred.

When Should You Search for Award Space?

While EVA Air has been notoriously good with releasing partner award space, things seem to have changed recently. It has become increasingly difficult to find partner award space.

At times, you could find anywhere from 2 to 4 business class seats on the same flight on popular routes such as Los Angeles to Taipei. Nowadays, it can be hard to find an award seat for days on end.

However, it is generally best to look about 355 days in advance. You can also find sporadic award availability a few days or weeks before departure.

What Do You Get With EVA Air Business Class?

We’ve already touched on what you can expect from EVA Air business class, but now we’ll dive in with a little more detail.

Amazing Inflight Amenities

EVA Air’s reverse-herringbone business class seats are a great way to fly, but it’s the other amenities that set it apart from the competition.

In October 2023, EVA Air introduced new amenity kits in collaboration with Giorgio Armani. The amenity kits contain products by American brand Malin+Goetz. These include toiletries such as an eye mask, toothbrush, toothpaste, socks, slippers, brush, and more.

You’re even given comfortable pajamas to wear during the flight. Though common in first class, pajamas in business class are a great perk.

Once you’re ready to sleep, you get more than just a lie-flat seat — a member of the crew can provide you with a mattress pad to make it even more comfortable.

Great Inflight Catering

Another area where EVA Air shines is its inflight catering. Plenty of airlines present food that leaves a lot to be desired, but EVA Air stands out for the quality of its cuisine. You can even preorder your main course before your flight, similar to Singapore’s Book the Cook service.

As we mentioned earlier, EVA Air serves Champagne to business class passengers — but not just any Champagne. Depending on your flight, you can expect Dom Perignon, Krug, or Veuve Clicquot.

Hello Kitty Jet

EVA Air has become famous among some flying enthusiasts for its Hello Kitty-themed jets on a limited number of routes. Currently, EVA Air is offering Hello Kitty flights from Taipei (TPE) to Bali (DPS) in Indonesia or Sapporo (CTS) in Japan.

However, it’s not just the livery that gets people excited. The inflight experience is also full of Hello Kitty references. When you arrive at your business class seat, you’ll notice the pillow waiting for you has a Hello Kitty design. In addition, other aspects such as napkins, bathroom amenities, menus, snacks, and even your slippers will all feature the Hello Kitty theme!

Final Thoughts

EVA Air’s business class product is a hidden gem that should be near or at the top of everyone’s list. Not only is it a convenient way to fly to Asia from the U.S., but you get first class service from start to finish. Although it is often overlooked in favor of fellow Asian carriers, it is a product worth trying.

Fortunately, there are many Star Alliance partners you can use to book an EVA business class award.
