Update:The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

Amtrak has launched a massive flash sale on many routes along the Northeast Corridor.

This is a limited-time sale, so let’s take a look at the promo and how to book!

Tickets on Sale Until December 19

There are some excellent fares included in the sale, including:

  • Boston to Providence for $4 one-way in coach (or $14 in Acela business class)
  • New York to Boston for $14 one-way in coach (or $39 in Acela business class)
  • Richmond to Washington, D.C. for $11 one-way in coach
  • Richmond to New York for $32 one-way in coach

The sale is available through December 19, 2023, for travel between January 2, 2024 and February 29, 2024.

There are several terms and conditions to be aware of before booking. The sale is valid on Acela trains and any trains that operate within Virginia and the Northeast Corridor. Additionally, the sale is for coach and Acela Business class only — so Acela’s first class is ineligible for the sale.

“There’s something special about the Northeast in the winter, and with up to 20% savings available, new and returning customers can save big and experience what each city has to offer,” said Amtrak Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Eliot Hamlisch.

This news comes amid an exciting few months for Amtrak.

The rail company recently announced a significant change to its fare structures. Now, it will have just 2 fares: Flex tickets, which can be changed or canceled for a full refund, and the lower-priced Value tickets, which aren’t changeable but will receive a 75% refund if canceled.

Additionally, Amtrak this week received nearly $10 billion in Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) funding from the Biden administration to modernize the Northeast Corridor, the nation’s busiest rail corridor.

How To Book

As mentioned above, you’ll want to book directly with Amtrak to take part in the sale. Once you’ve selected your dates and routes, you’ll want to book using a credit card that rewards you for Amtrak purchases or on general travel.

Amtrak has 2 co-branded credit cards issued by First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO). The Amtrak Guest Rewards® Preferred Mastercard® offers 20,000 Amtrak Guest Rewards bonus points after making at least $2,000 in purchases within the first 3 billing cycles of your account opening.

The card earns 3x points per $1 spent on Amtrak travel (including onboard purchases), 2x on dining and travel (including transit and rideshare), and 1x on all other qualifying purchases.

If you ride the rails often, having an Amtrak card in your wallet may be worth it — especially considering the card has a modest $99 annual fee.

Hot Tip:

You’ll also earn a round-trip companion coupon upon card anniversary, a 1-class upgrade upon card anniversary, and a station lounge pass.

Final Thoughts

This is a fantastic deal, especially if you travel along the coasts where Amtrak tickets can cost hundreds, depending on your route. As this sale ends on December 19, 2023, you’ll want to book now before the excellent deals are gone.
