Avelo Airlines has officially launched its new base at Raleigh-Durham (RDU).

Since the start of February, Avelo has inaugurated 5 new routes from the North Carolina city before officially opening its base on February 16, 2023.

“Since taking flight at RDU last May, we have been very encouraged by the positive response Avelo has received from RaleighDurham, and the surrounding areas,” said Andrew Levy, CEO at Avelo.

Let’s take a look at the details.

Avelo’s New Base at Raleigh-Durham

When an airline opens a base at an airport, it permanently bases aircraft at that airport. Along with the opening of the base comes the hiring of new staff including extra flight attendants, pilots, and aircraft mechanics to perform all the functions a base requires.

The carrier now has 5 bases across the United States in Burbank (BUR), New Haven (HNV), Orlando (MCO), Raleigh-Durham, and Wilmington, Delaware (ILG).

The airline plans to increase the number of aircraft based at the airport to 2 by the end of the first quarter of 2023 before increasing that to up to 7 aircraft over the next 2 years.

The airline also plans to significantly grow its route network from the North Carolina airport.

Bottom Line: Avelo Airlines is a low-cost carrier that pursued growth despite the setbacks of the pandemic with recent base openings in previously underserved airports such as Wilmington, Delaware (ILG).

“Avelo’s commitment to RDU and The Research Triangle extends beyond adding destinations to creating jobs in our community,” said Michael Landguth, CEO and president at Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. “We appreciate their investment in our region and look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

Tomorrow, February 17, 2023, the airline will inaugurate service to Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Fort Myers (RSW), Sarasota-Bradenton (SRQ), and West Palm Beach (PBI), which will bring the total number of Avelo routes from RDU to 7.

Here’s a look at all of Avelo’s routes from Raleigh-Durham:
