Avianca is expanding its network in South Florida.

As of May 10, 2025, the airline will add nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale and the Nicaraguan capital, Managua.

“The launch of this new route between Fort Lauderdale and Managua underscores our dedication to connecting key markets and offering seamless access to the best destinations in Latin America,” said Rolando Damas, director of sales for Avianca.

Here are the details of Avianca’s newest nonstop flight connecting South Florida and Central America.

Avianca Will Connect Fort Lauderdale With Nicaragua in May

Colombia-based Avianca’s new service to Managua will be the carrier’s third nonstop route from Fort Lauderdale (FLL). It also offers nonstop flights to Bogotá (BOG) and Medellin (MDE).

The new route will operate once daily with the following schedule:

  • Depart Managua (MGA) 10 a.m. — Arrive Fort Lauderdale (FLL) 2:35 p.m.
  • Depart Fort Lauderdale (FLL) 4 p.m. — Arrive Managua (MGA) 4:40 p.m.

The carrier will use its fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft to fly the relatively short hop across the Caribbean Sea. Flights are available to book now at Avianca.com, where the cheapest round-trip economy fare starts at around $237.

Avianca will compete against Spirit Airlines, which also offers nonstop flights between the 2 cities for around the same price.

Flying Avianca Versus Spirit to Nicaragua

While Avianca is Colombia’s flag carrier, the onboard experience is often more akin to that of a low-cost carrier. So while the onboard experience may not differ tremendously between these 2 carriers, there are implications to consider regarding mileage earning and redeeming.

Spirit’s Free Spirit program is more restrictive as it only applies to flights with Spirit Airlines. On the other hand, Avianca is a Star Alliance member, which means you can enjoy frequent flyer perks when flying Avianca, even if you hold status with another alliance member, such as United.

Plus, earning Avianca LifeMiles is a distinct advantage. The LifeMiles program is one of our favorites for booking award flights, and it even made some recent, positive changes that make it even better.

Final Thoughts

Avianca’s new route from Fort Lauderdale to Managua will provide another nonstop option for getting between the 2 cities. Even better, Avianca’s membership in Star Alliance makes this upcoming route a great option for earning and redeeming points.
