Avianca, the Colombian airline, will expand its business-class product to 40 additional routes, bringing the total to more than 80, beginning in September.

“A year ago, we reintroduced the Business Class experience on 11 routes within the Americas from Bogotá. The response from our passengers was immediate, which led us to add 23 more routes in December,” Avianca CEO Frederico Pedreira said. “Today, I’m thrilled to announce that we are extending the service to all of our international routes from Bogotá, Medellín, and San Salvador.”

Let’s take a look at this news.

Avianca Expands Business Class in the U.S.

Avianca is bringing its Airbus A320 business class product to more routes in the U.S. Here’s a look at the new business-class routes coming to the U.S. from Avianca’s 3 hubs:

  • From Bogotá to: Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Tampa (TPA), and San Juan (SJU)
  • From Medellín to: Miami (MIA), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), and San Juan
  • From San Salvador to: Boston (BOS), Ontario in California (ONT), Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston (IAH), and Miami

Business class on these flights will begin on September 15, the airline says.

Avianca will also begin operating business class from San Salvador (SAL) to Orlando (MCO), Montreal (YUL), Chicago (ORD), and Las Vegas (LAS), as well as from Medellín (MDE) to Orlando — all starting in December. All told, Avianca says it will expand business class service to more than 80 routes across the Americas.

Avianca’s business class seats in the Americas are comparable to U.S. domestic first-class seats. Avianca operates the Airbus A320 on these routes, which is used on short- and medium-haul flights. Business class seats offer extra recline and additional space in the first 3 rows of the aircraft, as well as charging ports.

However, when it comes to Avianca’s A320 business class, it is not great. As Upgraded Points’ Ryan Smith experienced earlier this year, premium seats don’t have entertainment systems, and your mileage may vary on cabin cleanliness.

Bottom Line:

You’ll probably have better luck on Avianca’s business class seats to Europe, which are on the Boeing 787 and are proper business class products. However, if you’re flying within South America, you may find a business class seat in name only.

Final Thoughts

Avianca will expand its business class seats to dozens of destinations in the Americas, including several U.S. cities like Boston, Dallas, and Fort Lauderdale. However, we suggest tempering your expectations here, as this business-class product is similar to what you’d find on a domestic first-class flight in the U.S.
