Premium travel cards compete on airport lounge access, one of the biggest reasons travelers justify paying hundreds of dollars in annual fees. There isn’t a best travel rewards card for everyone, as the value of each card depends heavily on where you fly from or which airports you visit most often.

Let’s see which cards make the most sense at the top U.S. airports based on the lounges available.

Comparing the Best Lounge Access Cards

A decade ago, there was virtually no competition for card lounges. The Platinum Card® from American Express dominated the space with its Centurion Lounges, and more broadly, the Global Lounge Collection, which provides access to partner lounges.

The lounge scene looks very different today. Here are the main cards we’re comparing:

American Express Membership Rewards

That’s because American Express isn’t just relying on its proprietary Centurion Lounge network (which continues to grow). If there isn’t a Centurion Lounge, the card’s 10 annual Delta Sky Club visits are generous, alongside the Priority Pass lounge membership (enrollment required).

Worldwide, the Amex Platinum card offers lounge access to more than 1,550 locations through its Global Lounge Collection.

Hot Tip:

Amex Platinum cardholders have to pay to bring guests into Centurion Lounges, but spending $75,000 on the account per year unlocks complimentary access for up to 2 guests. That same threshold also unlocks unlimited Delta Sky Club visits when flying same-day with Delta, rather than the standard 10 annual visits.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve Card Comes in at a Distant Second

There isn’t any comparison with the Amex Platinum card in terms of sheer breadth, but the Chase Sapphire Reserve card deserves second place. However, its lounge network largely overlaps with the Amex Platinum card, with truly unique credit card lounge access at just 3 airports: Boston (BOS), Philadelphia (PHL), and San Diego (SAN).

Chase Ultimate Rewards

Where the Chase Sapphire Reserve card shines above the rest is with its generous guest access policies. In comparison, the Amex Platinum card and the Capital One Venture X card have restricted guests over the past couple of years, making the Chase Sapphire Reserve card the only holdout.

For that reason, the Chase Sapphire Reserve card is a great choice if you travel often with a partner or a family. You can bring up to 2 guests to both Chase Sapphire Lounges and Priority Pass lounges, which is a huge benefit if shared access matters to you.

Capital One Venture X Card’s Network Isn’t Unique Yet

The Capital One Venture X card is easily the most affordable lounge card of the bunch with a $395 annual fee that’s as much as $500 lower. However, its footprint remains relatively small, and every airport with a Capital One Lounge or Landing also offers competing credit card lounge options.

Capital One Miles

That said, Capital One Lounges are known for being more refined with better food and drink options, though lounge preferences are ultimately subjective. For now, though, Capital One’s lounge network simply doesn’t provide as much reach.

The card makes the most sense for travelers who particularly enjoy Capital One lounges or want access through a more budget-friendly card.

Citi Strata Elite Card Is the Outlier

The Citi Strata Elite card is the newest premium card, though lounge access is not its strong suit. Citi does not have its own proprietary lounges and instead leans on the large Admirals Club network.

Every year, cardholders get 4 one-time passes to the Admirals Club, which can be used when flying with American Airlines. The Priority Pass membership benefit is a nice touch, but it isn’t unique among premium cards.

Admirals Club Boston Logan
There are nearly 50 Admirals Clubs in the U.S. Image Credit: Christine Krzyszton

The only major airport with Admirals Clubs but no credit card lounge is Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). Frequent AA flyers who need expanded Admirals Club access may be better served by the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Legend Mastercard®, which offers unlimited access for the primary cardholder and up to 2 guests for free.

That said, the Citi Strata Elite card has many great benefits beyond lounge access. For that reason, it could make sense as a premium card supplement rather than your main lounge card.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, the best lounge network on paper doesn’t mean much if you can’t use it at the airports you fly through most often.

While the Amex Platinum card has a clear advantage for most travelers, the Chase Sapphire Reserve card is best for guest access benefits, and the Capital One Venture X card is the most affordable option. The Citi Strata Elite card is far less interesting as a lounge access card, but the Admirals Club passes can be valuable for occasional AA flyers or as a supplement.
