Right now, Air Canada is running a limited-time promotion for buying Aeroplan points, offering up to a 30% discount through November 19, 2025.

This drops the price to about 1.4 cents per point, which is below our average valuation of Aeroplan points. In this scenario, buying points (and then redeeming them for a flight) can often be cheaper than the cost of buying the ticket in cash.

Let’s look at the details and whether or not you should hop on this promotion.

Air Canada’s Latest Buy Aeroplan Points Promotion

Whether you’re topping up your Aeroplan account balance or have found a redemption that makes buying points cheaper than paying for the flight in cash, this promotion could be helpful in the right situation.

Through November 19, Aeroplan has the following offer when buying Aeroplan points, available here:

  • Buy 2,000 to 9,000 points without a discount
  • Buy 10,000 to 19,000 points with a 15% discount
  • Buy 20,000 to 79,000 points with a 20% discount
  • Buy 80,000 to 99,000 points with a 25% discount
  • Buy 100,000+ points with a 30% discount

Note that there’s a limit of 500,000 thousands purchased points per year. Keep in mind that Aeroplan also has targeted offers on point purchases, so your offer may differ.

If you have the 30% discount and purchase the maximum of 250,000 points per transaction, you’ll pay $6,562.50 CAD ($4,677.38) to take home 250,000 points. That’s a per-point cost of 1.87 cents.

We value Air Canada Aeroplan points at 1.5 cents apiece, so you’d be buying them at a price above our valuation. That means this promotion isn’t a very good deal and only makes sense for a few people.

Hot Tip:

Buying points from Aeroplan won’t count as an airfare purchase on your credit card because Points.com processes sales. To maximize your earnings, use a good credit card for everyday purchases or a card where you’re spending toward a welcome offer.

Why You May Want To Purchase Aeroplan Points

Here are the 2 main situations in which we think buying points and miles is valuable:

  • You don’t have enough transferable points (e.g., Amex Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards) or Aeroplan points to make the booking you want.
  • Buying points to make a redemption costs less than paying for the flight outright.

Consider this: Purchasing 210,000 Aeroplan points under this promotion (at 1.87 cents each) would set you back roughly $3,927 — certainly not a small sum of cash. However, you could redeem those 210,000 points to fly round-trip in Lufthansa first class between the U.S. and Europe.

Lufthansa first-class tickets often cost $8,000 or more, so purchasing points could save you more than 50% against the standard cash fare!

Final Thoughts

It doesn’t always make sense to purchase points or miles. Usually, earning points from welcome bonuses and daily spending on credit cards makes more sense. However, if your mileage balance is looking bare and you have an immediate use for these Aeroplan points, purchasing during this promotion might make sense — and it could save you a lot of cash in the process if you have your eye on a flight in a premium cabin.

It can also make sense if you’re going to purchase a ticket with cash, as you might be able to buy the required Aeroplan points at a lower cost. If you’re in that situation, you have until November 19 to purchase with up to a 30% discount.
