Capital One has begun adding offers to accounts that provide cash-back on purchases you make in physical retail stores.

Here’s what you need to know about this new development from Capital One.

Capital One Adds In-Store Offers

Following the lead of other banks, including Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo, and others, Capital One has added a selection of offers that will provide cash-back for purchases made in brick-and-mortar stores.

To see your options, log into your Capital One account online. Then navigate to the Offers section, clear all filters, and then select In-Store to see what’s available.

One UP team member who has a checking, savings, and credit card account with the bank noted that his Capital One in-store offers could only be linked to checking or savings accounts, not a credit card. Plus, he only has 6 offers at the time of this writing. However, it’s entirely possible many more could be added in the coming days and weeks.

On the plus side, several of these in-store offers offer excellent cash-back rates: as high as 10% in this crop of retailers.

Of course, Capital One Offers are still available for online purchases. However, unlike Amex OffersChase Offers, and Citi Merchant Offers, Capital One Offers acts as a shopping portal instead of a card-linked program. So, instead of adding an offer to your Capital One credit card, you access Capital One Offers through your credit card account and then click a special link that takes you to a specific website to make a purchase. The cash-back or miles will then be credited to you within 3 billing cycles, assuming you followed the link Capital One provided and made the purchase there.

Unfortunately, you can’t stack discounts with other programs like Rakuten since Capital One Offers is a shopping portal. All personal Capital One credit cards are eligible for Capital One Offers upon enrollment.

Final Thoughts

Capital One has expanded its Offers program by introducing a new way to earn cash-back: through purchases made in physical stores.

At present, it seems like the slate of available retailers is still limited, and you might find that you’re limited to earning cash-back in a bank account rather than a credit card.

However, this program will likely evolve to encompass more retailers and more ways to receive your cash-back.
