Chase’s lineup of Sapphire credit cards is incredibly popular — and for good reason. Each card in the family provides great perks and benefits to cardholders, excellent earning structures, and, perhaps most importantly, fantastic welcome bonus offers.

However, how Chase has treated welcome bonus eligibility has been a little murky in the past, leading to much confusion among current and prospective cardholders interested in applying for a new Sapphire-branded card. Unclear (or even conflicting) information from customer service agents hasn’t helped.

Now, Chase has issued guidance that clarifies some aspects of the welcome bonus eligibility question for its Sapphire cards, but it also leaves us with more questions.

Here’s the latest, including new terms that will go into effect on January 22, 2026.

Chase’s Updated Guidance for Sapphire Welcome Bonus Eligibility

Fairly recently, Chase made it possible for cardholders to hold more than 1 Sapphire card, meaning someone can have both the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve® at the same time — and theoretically receive welcome bonus offers on both cards.

This marked a reversal of a Chase policy that had been in place since 2018 and has undoubtedly been a good development for anyone interested in a Chase Sapphire card. However, Chase’s policies regarding eligibility for a welcome bonus have remained vague, leading customer service representatives to provide conflicting or possibly inaccurate information in response to customer inquiries.

As it stands, whether you are eligible for a welcome bonus on a new Sapphire card boils down to a big “it depends.” Several factors go into whether you’re eligible for a new bonus, including when you originally signed up for any existing Sapphire cards you may have, your status under the 5/24 rule, and more.

Now, however, Chase is attempting to clarify (at least some of) its policies regarding this situation. Starting tomorrow, January 22, 2026, Chase says, “[E]ligible Sapphire cardmembers can now earn a welcome bonus offer on each Sapphire card, once per card, as long as they haven’t previously received a welcome bonus offer on that card.”

It went on to clarify with an example, saying that someone who is a current Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholder who has never had a Chase Sapphire Preferred card in the past is eligible to earn a welcome bonus offer on a new Chase Sapphire Preferred card account.

Starting tomorrow, Chase is codifying its policy that allows a cardholder to have more than 1 Sapphire card — and that customers will be eligible for a new welcome bonus on any Sapphire card they’ve never had before.

However, there are still questions. Its wording implies “lifetime language,” but nothing specifies whether this means lifetime in the literal sense or an arbitrary number of years, as is commonly the case with American Express cards with similar language.

Hot Tip:

Final Thoughts

Chase has clarified some aspects of its policy regarding welcome bonus eligibility on its lineup of Sapphire cards. Hopefully, this will lead to less confusion and fewer instances of distributing incorrect information to customers.

However, some questions remain unanswered. For now, it looks like scoring welcome bonuses on Sapphire cards may be a “your mileage may vary” situation for a while longer.
