The Citi Strata Elite℠ Card has been a staple in my wallet since it launched about a year ago — and for more reasons than one. It’s the card I use for Priority Pass lounge access (including 2 guests). And I find Citi ThankYou Points super valuable, especially because I can transfer them to the American Airlines AAdvantage program and other partners.

Plus, it’s easy to offset the annual fee thanks to the card’s various statement credits, including the up-to-$300 Citi Travel hotel credit and, my personal favorite, the up-to-$200 Splurge Credit.

Here’s how I take advantage of this card’s splurge credit, and why I hope more credit cards will follow suit and offer flexible, annual (not monthly) statement credits that benefit cardholders.

Citi Strata Elite Overview

The Citi Strata Elite card is one of the most valuable cards in my wallet, and I find Citi ThankYou Points flexible with easy options to transfer and use in Citi Travel. (I earn a lot of them thanks to the card’s generous bonus categories — I love the 1.5x points on everything and the 6x points on dining on Friday and Saturday nights from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Eastern time and 3x points on dining at all other times.)

In addition to Priority Pass membership (including 2 guests), the card offers Admirals Club passes annually. This is especially useful as I frequently fly American Airlines through Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) in Terminal 3, where there aren’t any Priority Pass lounges.

Besides the Splurge Credit and the up-to-$300 hotel credit, it offers an up-to-$200 annual Blacklane credit and a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit — more than $700 in annual benefits. All of these credits make it possible to offset the $595 annual fee.

How the Citi Strata Elite Splurge Credit Works

The Citi Strata Elite card features up to $200 in annual Splurge Credits each calendar year. I can choose up to 2 of the following brands: 1stDibs, American AirlinesBest Buy, Future Personal Training, and Live Nation.

When I first got the card, I signed up for the credit at citi.com/splurgecredit and selected 2 brands that fit with my lifestyle, which was easy. I’m a Oneworld flyer, so I picked American Airlines, and I’m also always buying new tech gadgets, so I picked Best Buy.

Then I shop normally with the businesses I choose and get credited for up to $200 of my spending. In 2025, I used the credit for American Airlines purchases, and in 2026, I used it to buy iPhone accessories at Best Buy. I can change businesses as I wish and easily track how much credit I’ve used for the year and when it renews in the benefits section of my account.

How I Maximize the Citi Strata Elite Splurge Credit

Here are the ways I make sure to take advantage of my credit:

I Set Calendar Alerts

I set calendar alerts a couple of times per year to ensure I don’t forget to use the credit. Above all, it reminds me to make my American Airlines purchases on my Citi Strata Elite card.

I also hold the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®, and I tend to put a lot of AA purchases on that card, but calendar alerts remind me to spend on the Citi Strate Elite card, at least for up to $200.

In January, when the credit resets, I try to have a plan for how to use it. I usually book AA flights, but this year, as I mentioned, I got a new iPhone, so I decided to get a case, screen protector, wireless charger, and other accessories at Best Buy instead of the Apple Store, which saved me money.

I Apply When Offers Double the Splurge Credit

The Splurge Credit comes up every calendar year, but the card’s annual fee is charged on the anniversary of my application date. I recommend applying for the card midyear, or at least in the fall, so you can take advantage of 2 Splurge Credits in your first year of card membership.

I applied in August of 2025 shortly after the card launched, and my annual fee just hit for the first time. But I’ve been able to get 2 Splurge Credits (one between August and December 2025, and one for 2026), making it even easier to offset the annual fee during the first year of card membership.

I Double-Dip With Rakuten

I got additional points on my Best Buy purchases this year by clicking through from Rakuten. My Rakuten account is connected to my Amex Membership Rewards, so I was able to receive the credit and earn valuable Amex points at the same time.

Hot Tip:

Check your favorite shopping portal before spending your Splurge Credit, as you may be able to double-dip. Check a site like TopCashback, or click through your preferred airline shopping portal to earn additional points or miles.

Why I Love the Splurge Credit (and Why Others Should Copy It)

I honestly wish other cards would copy this type of credit, and here’s why.

I Actually Use These Businesses

I appreciate that the perk features retailers that I find genuinely useful. I’m always buying flights on American Airlines (and yes, taxes and fees on award tickets count). And I think Best Buy, Live Nation, 1st Dibs, and Future Personal Training offer a wide variety of options for people with different interests and habits.

The only way I could see this credit improving is if it were accepted at supermarkets or big-box stores, which would make it even easier to use.

Having 5 Options Creates Flexibility

Not everyone buys flights on a whim or uses personal trainers, but because the card offers 5 businesses, cardholders have flexibility. For example, a couple of years ago, my husband tore his ACL and meniscus, so we couldn’t travel as much.

If I’d had the card then, I wouldn’t have been limited to just American Airlines or personal training. Instead, I could’ve pivoted to an entirely different type of business and still gotten maximum value from the credit.

Hot Tip:

Make sure to read the fine print before shopping. For example, for Live Nation, events or venues outside the United States or its territories aren’t eligible for the credit.

Ample Time and Annual Credits

I appreciate having a full calendar year to use the credit, which gives me time to figure out where and how to spend it.

And honestly, my favorite part of this credit is that it’s not monthly. I’m so tired of credit cards saying you get a $200 credit annually, only for the fine print to say it’s actually “X per month.” Ensuring I use a monthly credit takes time, organization, and energy on my part, especially when I have several credit cards (which I do).

An annual credit (which I can use in a single go or several shopping trips) is so much more customer-friendly. It’s easy to use, and it makes me feel like a valued customer. It’s as if the credit card company knows I’m busy and wants to make my life easier by giving me a full 12 months to use the credit (and I don’t often get this feeling from businesses).

Final Thoughts

My Citi Strata Elite card pays for itself each year, and my favorite perk is the easy-to-use Splurge Credit of up to $200. I hope the card continues to offer the credit and even adds more retailers for greater flexibility. If credit card companies outside of Citi are listening, this is a customer-friendly perk that cardholders want, and you should consider adding it.
