I love using points or resort credits to stay at luxury hotels I otherwise wouldn’t pay for, but many of my hotel stays are more practical than luxurious. Using small hotel credits, often $50 to $100 at a time, I save money on nights when I don’t want to pay full price.

Here’s how I use these smaller credits to save on cheap hotels, and which cards offer them.

Why I Don’t Use Points for Every Hotel Stay

I think of hotel bookings in different categories, using points and larger credits for luxury stays, and paying cash or using smaller hotel credits for more practical nights.

Using points makes sense when I am staying at a pricey resort — especially if booking an award stay helps me avoid paying a daily resort fee, as it does at Hilton properties.

I also book luxury stays with AmexTravel.com, which lets me use up to $600 in annual credits for qualifying stays with Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection using my Platinum Card® from American Express.

These bookings also offer on-site benefits, such as free breakfast for 2 guests, typically a $100 experience credit, late checkout, upgraded rooms, and more. Those luxury stays are fantastic, but not every hotel night is glamorous.

Thompson Austin room
I booked a stay at Thompson Austin, by Hyatt, with my Amex Platinum card hotel credit.

Sometimes I need an inexpensive airport hotel after a late-night arrival, a practical hotel near a theme park, or a midrange hotel with free breakfast and a room that accommodates my family of 5. I don’t usually want to spend reward points on a $100-to-$200-per-night room because I rarely find favorable points value for these stays. That said, I also like to avoid paying full price.

Using credit card benefits, I can have it both ways: saving rewards or larger credits for luxury redemptions while spending small hotel credits — typically $50 to $100 each — to save money on relatively inexpensive stays.

These credits seem small, and they are, but I use them for significant savings. A $50 credit won’t transform the cost of booking a luxury resort, but it cuts the cost of a $110 room nearly in half. And a $300 travel credit can cover multiple inexpensive stays rather than reducing the price of a single expensive hotel stay.

The trade-off? When booking through credit card travel portals to use my credits, I usually can’t use elite status or earn points with the hotel. But these are typically stays where that doesn’t matter.

I’m not missing out on earning many points when the rate is inexpensive. Status benefits don’t always make much of a difference at these properties, either. For example, a Hampton Inn offers a free buffet breakfast and usually doesn’t have upgraded room types.

Up to that point, I mostly valued the card for its benefits when flying with United Airlines, including at least a 10% savings when booking flights with miles, 2 one-time United Club passes annually, priority boarding, and a free first checked bag. But the increased annual fee prompted me to look more closely at the card’s value.

The United Hotels credit has proved helpful for inexpensive stays, and I used it for one this year after a late flight into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). I found the Hilton Seattle Airport & Conference Center, the closest hotel to SEA, for about $167 when booked directly with Hilton.

Hilton Seattle Airport & Conference Center guest room
I went right to sleep after a late flight for only $70 using my United Hotels credit.

Remembering I had a United Hotels credit to use, I compared prices and found the same standard room for $120 all-in at United Hotels. That favorable rate, combined with the $50 credit I received for paying with my United Business card, brought my rate for the night to $70, including taxes and fees.

That saved me from figuring out the rail system in an unfamiliar city by myself late at night, and I paid a lower nightly rate at the airport hotel than I would have for an extra night at my destination hotel.

Hilton Honors

I usually use these credits to cover charges during Hilton stays rather than room rates. For example, I can book a Hilton hotel with points, charge meals or parking to my room, and use my quarterly credit to offset $50 of that spending.

But low cash rates make it more attractive to use the credit to reduce the nightly rate cost.

For example, I stayed at Hampton Inn & Suites New Braunfels outside San Antonio, Texas, with my family in August this year. We wanted a quick overnight to make it easy to visit the nearby Schlitterbahn New Braunfels Waterpark, and we got free breakfast to make our morning easier.

Hampton Inn & Suites New Braunfels
We spent the night in New Braunfels for less than $60.

I paid $108 for the night with my Hilton Surpass card and received a $50 Hilton statement credit, bringing the cost down to $58 — probably less than we would’ve paid to eat breakfast at IHOP instead of the hotel buffet.

Award nights at the hotel start around 50,000 points. Upgraded Points currently values 50,000 Hilton Honors points at about $250, so it was a much better choice to book for $108 cash and only $58 out of pocket.

Unlike the credits with my United Business card and Hilton Surpass card, I can use the $100 all at once or in smaller chunks. For example, I could use $79 for a cheap stay and still have $21 left to apply to another stay later.

I haven’t used this benefit yet, but I’m planning to use it on a fall family road trip this year.

Capital One Miles

I like that this credit is large enough to cover the cost of a full night or more, and I’m not restricted to a particular hotel brand or lodging type. It’s more flexible than the Amex Platinum card’s up-to-$600 annual credit, which can only be used at Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection properties.

Last year, I used my full credit for a vacation rental in Denver. I love that I could book through Capital One Travel instead of Airbnb or Vrbo, and I wasn’t worried about using my credit on a booking where I would otherwise earn hotel loyalty rewards by booking directly.

This year, I’m using part of my credit for a night at Wyndham Lake Buena Vista – Disney Springs Area in Orlando, Florida, during a visit to Walt Disney World. The hotel gives us early theme park entry for our check-in and checkout days. I don’t stay at Wyndham properties often, so I don’t mind not earning hotel loyalty points for this stay.

It was just $154.25 for the night with no money out of my pocket. And I still have almost half of my $300 credit left for another Capital One Travel reservation — another credit stash I can use during our fall road trip.

Always Compare Rates Before Using Hotel Credits

Having multiple hotel credits available each year doesn’t mean I automatically book through whichever travel portal I have a credit on. I still compare options, looking at the cash rate for booking directly with the hotel.

That cash rate comparison matters because travel portals sometimes charge more than a direct booking. But sometimes they charge less, like my Seattle airport hotel, which was cheaper through United Hotels than booking directly with Hilton.

I also consider what I’m giving up, such as hotel loyalty earnings or bookings I get when booking directly. On a 1-night stay where I’m just sleeping and leaving, that probably doesn’t matter. But for a longer stay, where a breakfast credit, upgrades, and points earnings could matter, I’m more likely to book directly.

I check the points cost, just in case it’s a good redemption value. But I would rather keep my hotel points if I can turn a $108 Hilton night into a $58 stay without spending 50,000 points.

Final Thoughts

Hotel credits don’t have to be large or exciting to add value. A $70 airport hotel isn’t outstanding, but it gave me a practical benefit that made travel easier and cheaper — and I didn’t have to spend valuable rewards points to make an ordinary hotel free.

A Hampton Inn in New Braunfels and a Wyndham in Disney Springs aren’t aspirational hotel redemptions, but saving money (and not spending points) on those nights makes it easier to book the hotel stays worth writing home about.
