Update:The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

Due to a lack of nonstop routes between the U.S. and Africa, airlines that operate service can charge eye-watering prices for cash tickets in business class.

Enter Ethiopian and its fifth freedom flight from New York to Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire (ABJ). For $1,945 round-trip, you can fly the transatlantic segment with Ethiopian, followed by a short hop on an Air Côte d’Ivoire Dash-8 to Lagos, Nigeria (LOS).

Fare Deal — Details

The deal has gone up a couple of hundred dollars since we spotted it earlier in the month, but given there’s now availability from April 2024 until February 2025, we thought we’d bring this back to the top of your newsfeed.

Once you’re in Africa, nothing stops you from doing country hopping, too.

  • Class: Business (lie-flat with Ethiopian)
  • Routes: New York (JFK) to Lagos, Nigeria (LOS)
  • Dates: April 2024 through February 2025
  • Rates: From $1,945 round-trip

The sub-$2,000 fares are available to buy for travel as soon as April 10, 2024.

And there’s availability right through until February 2025, including dates over the peak summer travel season.

Best Ways to Book

These excellent value fares from New York to Nigeria are an example of one of the few times when it’s better to pay cash than use points for a trip.

For purchase protection and travel disruption mitigation reasons, we’d recommend following the link from Google Flights and booking directly through Ethiopian Airlines website rather than using a third party or an OTA.

Using a credit card such as The Platinum Card® from American Express when paying for tickets like this to earn 5x points on flights purchased directly with the airline or with AmexTravel.com (up to $500,000 per year, then 1x). Cardholders can also enroll in a Priority Pass membership to receive lounge access at Newark, even when flying premium economy!

Final Thoughts

Flying to Africa round trip for less than $2,000 isn’t something we come across all too often.

If Nigeria or other West African and sub-Saharan African nations have been on your bucket list, then this might be a good time to take the plunge — especially if you like to travel in the luxury of a lie-flat seat.
