Delta Air Lines will move to the new Terminal D being built at Tampa International Airport, and the airline will open a new Sky Club lounge there — including direct access to a gate.

The new terminal will open in 2028, with Delta moving out of its current location in Concourse E.

Here’s what we know about the move, which is part of the airport’s plan to grow from 25 million annual passengers today to 35 million by 2037.

Boarding From the Lounge at Tampa’s Terminal D

The news was reported by Cody Gonzalez on X (formerly Twitter), citing an agreement between the airport and Delta Air Lines that was leaked online before being removed.

However, View From the Wing saved a copy of the agreement. It says Tampa International Airport (TPA) will lease at least 6 gates to Delta at Airside D, which is what the new terminal will be formally called. (The airport has a central body known as “landside terminal” and 4 satellite terminals known as “airside.” Airside D will be the fifth, counterintuitively, adding to the existing Airside A, C, E, and F.)

Delta will also have 18,000 square feet of space to open a new Sky Club, which will also have a direct connection to a gate, allowing boarding from the lounge. That’s something Delta does not currently do at any of its lounges, though it may sound familiar to some passengers. For example, Emirates boards first and business class from lounges at some airports.

Delta will also move its operations from Terminal E to the new Airside D, per the agreement. That means the current Sky Club in Terminal E will close.

The new terminal has a preliminary cost of $1.5 billion and is scheduled to open to the public in 2028, according to Tampa Airport.

The 16-gate Airside D will handle international flights at the airport and will become the airport’s largest terminal at 600,000 square feet. It will also host at least another lounge besides the Sky Club.

International airlines serving Tampa will relocate there too. Those are:

  • Aeromexico
  • Air Canada
  • Avianca
  • British Airways
  • Cayman Airways
  • Copa Airlines
  • Discover Airlines
  • Edelweiss Air
  • Porter Airlines
  • Virgin Atlantic
  • WestJet

Since Aeromexico, Virgin Atlantic, and WestJet partner with Delta, their qualifying passengers will likely be able to use the Sky Club as well.

Delta’s only international service from Tampa today is a year-round flight to Amsterdam (AMS). With the move to a new terminal, Delta or its partners may add more international destinations.

Final Thoughts

With Tampa International Airport growing by double digits each year, this expansion cannot come too soon. And a new Sky Club is always welcome news for frequent flyers, especially if it has 18,000 square feet to relax in and direct access to a gate.
